Our Cruelty-Free Criteria
Cruelty-Free Kitty verifies beauty and personal care brands as being truly cruelty-free. All the brands that are marked "cruelty-free" in the database ensure the following:
- The brand does not test finished products or ingredients on animals
- The brand's suppliers do not test finished products or ingredients on animals
- The brand does not allow any third-parties to test on animals on their behalf
- The brand does not test on animals where required by law
- The brand is not available in stores in countries which require animal testing
You can rest assured that no animal testing is going on at any level, and that these brands don't pay for their products to be tested on animals anywhere in the world.
What does 100% vegan mean?
Cruelty-free refers to a brand that doesn't test on animals. A vegan brand goes one step further: they ensure that none of their products contain animal-derived ingredients. You won't find common ingredients that are made from animals (or by animals) such as lanolin, honey or beeswax, and animal-derived gelatin.
How do I know if a product is vegan?
It's tricky to find vegan skincare products because so many ingredients can be either plant-derived OR animal-derived. You won't be certain only by looking at their ingredient list. To make sure, you'll have to contact the brand. Each brand can confirm whether their ingredients are vegan or not by checking with their suppliers or their lab.
Are vegan products safer or more sustainable?
The short answer is no. Vegan products are not necessarily "safe" or environmentally-friendly, and this is a common misconception. For example, a nail polish can be vegan and contain formaldehyde, which is not considered safe. Vegan beauty products can also contain ingredients like dyes, glitter, or microbeads which can be harmful for the environment. Just because a product is vegan, doesn't mean that the company producing it is taking other initiatives towards sustainability.
