I tried out a whopping FIFTEEN vegan deodorants so you don't have to! As always when shopping for vegan body care products, keep an eye out for animal ingredients like beeswax, honey and lanolin. For sensitive skin, I would also suggest avoiding any formulations which contain aluminum. Additionally, I've noted the products that have baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), as they can cause some irritation to sensitive skin due to higher pH.
It's important to note that most of these deodorants are not antiperspirants, since those tend to contain lots of chemicals to prevent sweat. In fact, sweating is a natural, healthy way for the body to stay cool and release toxins! Nonetheless, I have noted the products that are effective at keeping the underarms drier compared to others.
Let me know in the comments if there are any other cruelty-free and vegan deodorants that you swear by!
1. Alvera Aloe Roll On Deodorant
My nickname growing up was "aloe vera", so I'm always partial to products made with aloe. This roller ball deodorant works well and never causes any irritation. While I wouldn't use this one for working out, I find that it keeps me smelling fresh for daily activities. It comes in a few nice fragrances, including an unscented one which is ideal for those that don't want to smell like deodorant all day. Since this is a roll-on liquid formula, it does take a little bit longer to dry, which can transfer to clothing. Aluminum-free.
2. Bare Bones Body Deodorant
This is one of my absolute favorites! I love the clean smell and the fact that it actually works. I did not experience any rashes or irritation with this one. In addition, Bare Bones is a cool indie brand that stands up for a vegan lifestyle and has an awesome aesthetic, too! They also have a couple nice options to choose from, including a sensitive skin version without baking soda. Aluminum-free.
Out of stock. :(
3. Crystal Body Deodorant Stick
The Crystal deodorant stick is a great tried-and-true option that can be found in drugstores and grocery stores. It's really different and takes some getting used to (not to mention the cap being a little confusing to fasten), and while I wouldn't recommend it for any physical activities or exercise, it could be layered with other deodorants for added staying power. Its formula is basically potassium alum, a natural mineral salt, which is not known to contain the harmful properties of the other aluminum-based ingredients in many deodorants.
4. JASON Deodorant Stick
JASON's deodorant collection has varieties like Tea Tree, Aloe Vera, Apricot, Lavender and Unscented. I tried the Lavender, which has a very nice smell. However, as many people have reported, these do have a slightly sticky texture after application, which can be off-putting if you're going for a cleaner feel. Additionally, it is not incredibly effective on its own without layering with more product. It may not be the best option for those with sensitive skin, due to the baking soda in its formula. Aluminum-free.
5. Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant
Lavanila's deodorant collection uses unique natural ingredients like goji berry, Japanese honeysuckle, lichen lemon and tea tree oils. While it comes in a few different fragrances, my favorite is the Sport Luxe. It does have a powdery smell, but it works well for working out. The other scents smelled a little plasticky and didn't hold up for long wear. Aluminum-free.
6. Le Couvent Des Minimes Everyday Deodorant
This roll-on deodorant is made with great natural ingredients like rosemary extract, lemon and orange peel. As expected, it has a really nice citrusy botanical scent, almost like a perfume, which I love. As a deodorant it works pretty well, but I wouldn't recommend it on its own for working out. It is designed for sensitive skin, however, and is definitely a pleasantly soothing option compared to many of the other deodorants. It is free from harmful aluminum, but does contain potassium alum (alum stone).
7. LUSH T'eo Deodorant
The LUSH T'eo bar is a solid powder, which is an innovative and aesthetically pleasing format for deodorant. I like to layer it over a stick deodorant if I want to feel drier in the armpit area. It does have antiperspirant properties as it absorbs sweat. The bar contains the triple citrus oils of juniper berry, tea tree and lemongrass, so naturally I love the smell of it. I even like just having it in my drawer because it makes everything smell so good! It does have baking soda, so it may not be ideal for sensitive skin. Aluminum-free. For a creamier option, LUSH also makes the Aromaco, a luscious soft bar made with chamomile vinegar and witch hazel.
8. Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant Stick
Meow Meow Tweet's deodorant stick comes in a few soothing varieties. I tried the Lemon Eucalyptus, which smells really nice, and contains sunflower seed oil, arrowroot powder, shea butter, cocoa butter and rosemary extract. It also has drying properties to combat sweat. I found the biodegradable package to be very adorable, but with some functional concerns. Just don't push it up too much otherwise you can't push it down, kind of like a push pop. The stick does contain baking soda, so it may not be best for sensitive skin. Additionally, the stick may need to be warmed up a bit between the hands if it's too cold. As for functionality, I wouldn't say it's strong enough for a heavy workout. Aluminum-free.
Also available in jar form.
9. Milk Makeup Natural Deodorant
I was super excited to see that Milk had expanded their sleek brand to a natural deodorant! I love the spa-like fragrance of their deodorant stick, but it doesn't hold up very well for prolonged wear. I would recommend this one as a "layering" fragrance deodorant. I also like the cute small packaging, which is the same as their stick highlighters. Aluminum-free.
10. Nubian Heritage 24 Hour Natural Deodorant
The Nubian Heritage deodorant, as with their other body care products, has a divine smell and feel. They have a lot of nice fragrances, but my favorite variety is the Raw Shea Butter, which I find to be very soothing when I have rashes from shaving or using other less gentle deodorants. It contains exciting natural ingredients like grapefruit, aloe, frankincense and myrrh. I also like how smoothly it applies. Aluminum-free.
11. Pacifica Underarm Deodorant Wipes
These things are a godsend, and I wish I had known about them back when I was a dancer! I make sure to have these on hand in my bag for whenever I need a refresh on-the-go. I'm sure my fellow passengers on the NYC subway appreciate it. I love how unique the wipes are. When all other deodorants fail, you can always use these to freshen up throughout the day, which I always find less irritating than layering on more deodorant. They have many varieties, but my favorite is the coconut milk version. Aluminum-free.
12. Schmidt's Deodorant
This one is hands down the most effective deodorant of the bunch. I tested Schmidt's while attending a trade show event under warm lights while wearing a heavy blazer, and still ended up smelling and feeling fresh at the end of the day! I did find the regular formula to be too irritating for my super sensitive skin, as it has baking soda, but the sensitive skin formula works perfectly. I also like to layer it under other "layering" fragrance deodorants (like the Tarte Clean Queen and Milk Makeup Deodorant). Schmidt's offers tons of nice fragrances, but my current favorite is the Coconut Pineapple. Also, if you use the regular non-sensitive version, the stick could benefit from a little warming up. Aluminum-free.
Also available in jar form.
13. Tarte Clean Queen Vegan Deodorant
I love the clean scent of this one! Also, Tarte gets major bonus points for having the word "vegan" on their packaging (which is really cute). I would probably buy it for that reason alone! Like the Milk Makeup Deodorant, this one also works well as a "layering" fragrance deodorant over something else more effective. My go-to combo is to layer this over the Schmidt's Coconut Pineapple for a winning one-two punch. Aluminum-free.
14. The Fanciful Fox Clay Deodorant
The Fanciful Fox has some of the nicest natural fragrances. My personal favorite is the Lavender Vanilla, which smells amazing and is formulated for sensitive skin. Plus, everything is handmade in Brooklyn by a really awesome mother-daughter team, so it's nice to support great vegan local businesses. I will say the product has a hard consistency that needs to be warmed up a bit before applying to the skin (otherwise it drags a bit, which can cause irritation). Aluminum-free.
15. Tom's of Maine Long Lasting Natural Deodorant
This one is very easy to find at drug stores and grocery stores including Trader Joe's, making it a super convenient cruelty-free and vegan option. Tom's makes many scents, but I prefer the unscented variety. Some people have had adverse reactions to this product, however, so it may not be best for sensitive skin. Aluminum-free.
