Major Victory: Canada Bans Animal Testing for Cosmetics

by Suzana Rose

Aug 13, 2023

We're thrilled to announce that Canada has officially banned animal testing for cosmetics, joining a growing list of countries that have taken measures to protect animal welfare and promote ethical cosmetic testing. The ban was implemented through amendments to the Food and Drugs Act, which received Royal Assent on June 22, 2023, and will come into force on December 22, 2023.

Spread the word.

The new regulations not only ban the testing of cosmetics on animals in Canada but also prohibit the sale and import of cosmetic products that rely on animal testing. Additionally, it will be an offense for a company to falsely claim their products do not use animal testing.

Canada now joins other countries, including all European Union countries, Australia, the United Kingdom, and South Korea, that have already taken measures to prohibit cosmetic animal testing. A total of 44 countries have passed laws banning cosmetic animal testing, and 11 states in the US have also banned the practice.

The Canadian government has been working with animal protection advocates, such as Humane Society International/Canada, Animal Alliance Canada, and Cruelty Free International, as well as cosmetics companies like Lush Cosmetics and The Body Shop, to advance legislation to ban cosmetics animal testing in Canada. Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos stated that the ban assures Canadians that their cosmetic products do not rely on animal testing and is good for both the industry and consumers.
It is important to note that the ban only applies to new products, and many products currently on store shelves made it to market based on old animal testing data.

While this is a significant step forward, it's also crucial to remember that beauty products sold in Canada will not necessarily be cruelty-free, as animal testing can still occur in other countries. As a cruelty-free advocate, we encourage consumers to continue supporting and purchasing products from verified cruelty-free brands to ensure that their beauty choices align with their values.
