The Best Concealers of 2022, Ranked by Formula

by Suzana Rose

Feb 1, 2022

If you're in the market for a new concealer, you're in luck. We've rounded up the best of the best, and they all have one thing in common: they provide great coverage without creasing. In this post, we'll be ranking the best concealers of 2022 based on their formula. We'll be looking at full coverage concealers with both natural and matte finishes, as well as medium coverage options with a dewy, skinlike finish. We'll also consider light coverage options for those who prefer barely-there makeup.

About The Products

The list below consists of cruelty-free products only. Cruelty-Free Kitty's mission is to end animal testing in the beauty industry. We do this by promoting that weren't tested on animals, and we hope you join our mission.

In addition to this, some products are also vegan (formulated without any animal by-products or derivatives). We mark vegan products with a "V" symbol at the top right of the product image. You may also find products marked as clean (no potentially harmful ingredients), organic (at least 70% of ingredients are certified organic), or sustainable (read more about our sustainability criteria here).

What we looked for in a great concealer

The best concealer is subjective. However, most people looking for a great concealer can agree on three things.

It covers up stubborn dark circles and spots

First, the best concealer for most provides good coverage. We looked for a formula that provides medium to full coverage, thus covering up dark circles, redness, or blemishes.

Note: Some concealers on this list have a light to medium coverage. If this is what you're looking for, check the tables below to find your ideal coverage.

It can multitask and it looks natural anywhere on the face

Second, the best concealer should be versatile and provide a natural finish. By this I mean that it can be used both under the eyes, to cover spots and blemishes, and to highlight the face. Since a concealer with a skin-like finish is the most versatile, and most of us are looking for a product that blends easily and looks natural on the skin, this is what we considered to rank the best concealers.

Note: If you're looking for a matte finish or highly dewy finish, check the tables below to find the right concealer for you.

It doesn't crease

Third, the best concealers don't crease as long as you're using setting powder on top. Creasing is when the product builds up in folds or fine lines. Products that have a creamier texture tend to crease more than dry ones. To avoid creasing, follow up with setting powder immediately after applying your concealer.

Best Concealer: Cover FX’s Power Play

This is the best concealer on the market. If you're looking for a product that's full coverage while still looking and feeling natural, try Cover FX's Power Play Concealer. It's similar to the hyped-up Tarte Shape Tape, without any potential dryness. You can use this concealer to erase dark circles and blemishes or to highlight and contour if you have several shades.

The formula is lightweight and you only need a small amount to get decent coverage. The finish looks natural and skin-like, and it's super user-friendly and easy to blend. It also lasts all day long on top of providing great coverage, and the formula is practically crease-free.

Cover FX is also a pioneer of the extended shade range. In this product, they not only provide an extensive shade range of 30, but they take into account several undertones. Practically every single person, from fair to dark, can find their perfect shade. The undertones are pink, neutral, golden, and golden+ which is essentially olive.

Best Drugstore Concealer: ELF Hydrating Camo Concealer

First, there are two similar products by E.L.F. First is their original 16H Camo Concealer, which has a drier formula (think of a Shape Tape dupe for a fraction of the price). Then, they also released their Hydrating Camo Concealer which is also long-lasting and full-coverage, while being more moisturizing. Both have a very wide doe-foot applicator similar to Shape Tape.

If you don't mind a matte, dry formula, then you could try their 16H Camo Concealer. For everyone else, I recommend their Hydrating Camo Concealer as an alternative that's just as great - minus the dryness. It has a satin finish and looks more skin-like than its 16H counterpart. However it also lasts all day and can cover up almost anything. The formula is lightweight and c

At only $6 a pop, it's understandable why this product is so hyped up. It's also available in 25 shades, and although the range isn't as extensive as other products in this list, most will be able to find a very good color match. This product also contains sodium hyaluronate to lock in moisture.

Best Clean Concealer: KOSAS Revealer Concealer

CoverageFull coverage
FinishSatin
Shade range28 shades

I'll just get this concealer's full name out of the way: Revealer Super Creamy + Brightening Concealer and Daytime Eye Cream. Phew, that's a mouthful! The reason why it's called the "revealer" concealer is because it contains "skincare" ingredients that reveal better skin with long-term use. For the undereye, this means caffeine and pink algae to brighten. For blemishes, it means arnica and provitamin B5, plus it also contains hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin.

It's definitely nifty to create a concealer that doubles as skincare, though of course, it should be used as a supplement to your existing skincare products and not as a replacement.

The texture is very creamy and the coverage is medium and can be layered if you need more. With a natural finish, it's perfect when used under the eyes, but it can also be used to spot conceal blemishes. Overall, this is a holy grail concealer for most skin types, and it's made from conscious ingredients.

The only caveat? Because it's made with cleaner ingredients, be sure to use it before its expiration date.

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer

EthicsCruelty-free, vegan
CoverageFull coverage
FinishNatural matte
Shade range35 shades

This one covers anything.

The award-winning Shape Tape is still going strong more than five years after its launch. This concealer took the beauty world by storm with its high coverage and extra-long staying power. You can use it to cover up stubborn redness and spots, highlight the entire face, and even contour if you get a darker shade. This concealer also works to cover up under-eye darkness, especially for those with a lot of pigmentation around and under the eyes.

Because the coverage is so full, it's also not the most hydrating concealer on this list. Some might find this product drying, especially those with dry skin types. However, if you use a small amount and don't overdo it, you shouldn't have a problem with dryness as its formula isn't as dry as other full coverage concealers on the market. Those with oily, normal, and even dry skin report to love this product.

Although it only came in a few shades when initially released, Tarte has since expanded the range to 35 shades. The long-lasting formula is one of its main pros, and it has a natural matte finish. Keep in mind that this product is scented and has a noticeable lemony scent.

Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define Concealer

So. Many. Shades. This drugstore full-coverage concealer from Makeup Revolution comes in a shocking 50 shades. You'll also find your perfect shade based on your undertones -- cool, neutral, yellow, or olive. This product is also similar to Tarte Shape and E.L.F.'s 16H Camo Concealer (the matte version).

With a matte finish and long-lasting formula, it covers up everything from dark circles to stubborn acne scars and will last all day, promising 16-hour wear. Since it's on the drier side, you don't need to set it with a powder, and it also doesn't crease when used on its own.

It has a wide doe-foot applicator much like the other concealers it's "inspired by". You can also find it in drugstores worldwide, and with its extensive shade range, it's a good recommendation for most. If you're looking for a full-coverage, matte, long-lasting concealer on a budget, this one's for you.

Milani Conceal + Perfect Longwear Concealer

EthicsCruelty-free, vegan

Although this concealer isn't often talked about, it's one of my personal favorites. It has a creamy formula that blends beautifully, and it provides great coverage while being hydrating. If you're looking for a creamy product that isn't at all drying and has a natural, satin finish, this is a great option.

It's also long-lasting and supposedly water-resistant up to 12 hours. Although I haven't tried this, I can say that it does last all day and doesn't budge. The shade range isn't the most extensive, but it's decent: it comes in 18 shades with a good number of both light and dark shades.

Too Faced Born This Way Sculpting Concealer

EthicsCruelty-free, vegan
CoverageFull coverage

Shade range30 shades

This concealer from Too Faced is medium to full coverage while also being hydrating. It's perfect under the eyes and doesn't crease as long as you follow up with powder, but you can also flawlessly cover up any blemishes you might have. Plus, you can use it. to highlight and contour as well. The finish is on the matte side.

If you're looking for a more hydrating version of Shape Tape, this is it. A little goes a long way, and it's also going to last all day. The formula is light and weightless, and also includes hyaluronic acid and coconut water. This product is also vegan and paraben-free. It comes in 30 shades with a match for everyone.

Catrice Liquid Camouflage Concealer

EthicsCruelty-free (not vegan, contains beeswax)

FinishNatural
Shade range17 shades

This is an inexpensive concealer, but it's on par with all the other top products mentioned here. It's also touted as being a dupe for Shape Tape, with a weightless formula and great lasting power. It's full coverage and will cover up any dark circles without creasing and settling into fine lines (as long as you follow up with powder).

It also claims to be waterproof, and it has a smaller doe-foot applicator than other concealers in this list, making it easy to precisely pin-point blemishes. If you see this one in a drugstore, try it out.

Note: This concealer has a strong fragrance, and people with sensitive skin might not jive well with this.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer

EthicsCruelty-free (not vegan)

FinishNatural
Shade range24 shades

A little bit of this concealer goes a long way. With full coverage, it was created especially for dry or mature skin types. It's called the Bye Bye Under Eye Full Coverage Anti-Aging Waterproof Concealer, so it also claims to be waterproof, AKA long-lasting. It claims to last as long as 24 hours.

The formula is creamy and super pigmented, and I can't stress enough how little you need to use to achieve full coverage. It also contains peptides, antioxidants, collagen, and hyaluronic acid.

Flower Beauty Light Illusion Full Coverage Concealer

EthicsCruelty-free

FinishLuminous
Shade range12 shades

Flower Beauty is owned by actress Drew Barrymore, who of course we all adore! I've tried a few products from her brand and I've loved every single one. This concealer is the counterpart to the Light Illusion Foundation which I love, and just like the foundation, this concealer has a very dewy finish.

Although the finish looks lovely and luminous under the eyes, I don't think this concealer is versatile. Meaning, if you're trying to cover up any raised bumps, the light will be reflected on the bumps to make them look more pronounced. The shade isn't as extensive as other products on this list, and keep in mind that the coverage isn't as full as the top products either.

That being said, this concealer performs beautifully if you're looking for a dewy under-eye concealer that can cover up moderate dark circles and make you look more awake. It blends easily and it has a creamy formula.

Colourpop Hyaluronic Concealer

EthicsCruelty-free
CoverageMedium
FinishSatin
Shade range30 shades

At only $9 a piece for a concealer that's made in the USA, Coloupop is a big player on this list. They offer several concealers, but their best one subjectively is their Hyaluronic Concealer. Because it provides good coverage while still being creamy and easy to blend, it's the one that might appeal to most people.

Although they describe the coverage as being "full", it's not quite as full as the top products on this list. For this reason we would best describe its coverage as "medium". It's available in 30 inclusive shades which you can refine by warm, cool, or neutral. Please note that this product is not vegan since it includes beeswax.

ILIA True Skin Serum Concealer

EthicsCruelty-free, vegan, conscious ingredients

FinishSatin
Shade range20 shades

Another "clean beauty " favorite is the True Skin Serum concealer by ILIA. This is one of the biggest conscious makeup brands out there, and their concealer is top notch. It's fragrance-free, vegan, and provides medium coverage with a natural satin finish.

It has a creamy consistency and it's formulated with mastic, a natural tree resin, as well as stabilized vitamin C for a brightening and firming effect when used long-term. It's available in 20 shades and I believe ILIA is frequently adding new shades as well (they just newly added the lightest and darkest shades). If you're looking for an effective, natural-looking concealer that's multi-tasking and formulating with conscious ingredients, this is a great choice.

Josie Maran Vibrancy Argan Oil Concealer

EthicsCruelty-free, vegan
CoverageMedium
FinishSatin
Shade range7 shades
Where to buySee above

Even though Josie Maran's Vibrancy Argan Oil Full Coverage Concealer only comes in 7 shades, it's still on this list because it's such a great concealer, especially for those with drier skin types. But keep in mind: even though it has "Full Coverage" in its name, it's more of a medium coverage. That being said, it provides great coverage that looks natural, and it's long-lasting despite being so hydrating.

It's natural-looking and creamy, and blends very easily. If you're looking for a concealer that will brighten up your undereye area and make you look more awake (while still making your skin look like skin) this is a great option. It contains a bit of argan oil as the name claims, but keep in mind that it mainly contains silicones as well for that moisturizing texture. It has a fragrance but it's natural and not synthetic.

Milk Makeup Flex Concealer

FinishSatin
Shade range24 shades

If you don't like a lot of coverage and are going for a natural look, this concealer from Milk Makeup is highly recommended. The shade range is pretty inclusive even though it doesn't come in the most shades. It's touted as a "medium to full coverage" concealer by the brand, however, it's more on the light side.

The formula is creamy and easy to work with, and you can even use this concealer on its own even when you're not wearing any foundation. Start with a moisturized face and blend in concealer under your eyes, on any blemishes, and wherever else is needed, and you're good to go.

Glossier Stretch Concealer

CoverageLight

Many people love the Glossier brand and are faithful to this concealer, however be warned that its coverage is light. They claim that this concealers "disspears into the skin and moves with it" rather than staying on top of your skin looking cakey.

Although it only comes in 12 shades, you might be able to find a good match given how sheer it is. Similarly to the Flex concealer above, this is a great option for those who only need light, natural-looking coverage. Rather than coming in a tube, it comes in a pot and you can either apply it with your fingers or with a concealer brush.

RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-Up

"Un" Cover-Up by RMS Beauty is the third light coverage concealer on our list. Although this one comes with a higher price tag, it's definitely more luxurious and also contains clean and conscious ingredients. Keep in mind it's not vegan as it contains beeswax.

The brand claims that this concealer is lightweight yet buildable enough to cover redness and dark circles. Although it's not super high coverage, it does a great job if you'd like to keep your makeup looking light and fresh. Because it's made with many oils such as coconut oil jojoba oil and cocoa butter, those with oily skin types might not agree with it. However if you have dry skin, you'll love the formula.

The following concealers are not cruelty-free:

At Cruelty-Free Kitty, we're taking a stand against animal testing by only recommending cruelty-free products. Although the concealers below are commonly recommended, they're not included in our list because the brands do test on animals or fund animal testing.

  • Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer
  • Maybelline Fit Me Concealer
  • NARS Creamy Concealer
  • MAC Pro Longwear Concealer
  • Dior Forever Skin
  • YSL Touche Eclat
  • Clinique Even Better Concealer
  • L'Oreal Infallible

Concealer FAQ

How do I find the right concealer for me?

When trying to find the right concealer it's important to consider what type of coverage you want. Do you want a sheer layer that brightens your undereye area or do you need a full coverage concealer? Unless you don't need much coverage, I would recommend a medium to full coverage concealer for undereye circles as well as if you have redness or blemishes.

How do I choose the correct shade?

Another important factor to consider when choosing a concealer is your skin tone. If you want the concealer to blend in seamlessly with your skin, choosing a shade that matches your skin tone as best as possible will make it much easier and more natural looking. Picking a concealer that is too light or dark will bring the wrong attention to those areas.

If you're covering acne spots or redness on your face, try choosing a shade that's as close as possible to your skin tone. Don't forget the undertones: even your skin is warm (more yellow than pink) go with a warm or golden shade. If you're cooler-toned, go with a more pinky or cool-toned shade.

When choosing a concealer for the purpose of highlighting the face, you'll want to go a shade or two lighter at the maximum. This can also apply to your undereye concealer, however you're free to go with the same shade as your skin tone if you're not going for a highlighted undereye. Some concealers are more dewy and can be used to reflect the light, making them a good choice for the undereye.

What's the difference between a matte concealer and a natural or satin finish?

A concealer with a matte finish will prevent the area from reflecting light and allow it to blend more naturally into your skin. Concealers with a natural or satin finish can be used under your eyes, but they may have a higher chance of creasing due to the sheen.

It's important to find a concealer that matches your foundation. If you're using a matte foundation, you might not want to conceal any blemishes (especially raised bumps) with a concealer that's very dewy, or will accentuate the spots instead of concealing them. If your foundation has a satin finish, you'll be able to get away with a satin or sewy concealer anywhere on the face unless you have any raised bumps.

Which concealers have the most inclusive shade range?

By far on this list, the concealer with the most extensive shade range is by Makeup Revolution. Their concealers come in 50 shades which cover the lightest skin as well as the darkest. You'll be sure to find your perfect match with them.

Other brands with inclusive shade ranges are Tarte (35 shades), Cover FX (30 shades), Colourpop (30 shades), and Too Faced (also 30 shades). Considering just a few years ago it was common practice for brands to only release 10 concealer shades or less, this is great progress.

Do you have any tips for concealing pimples?

Rule number one is to always use a matte concealer when covering raised acne bumps. If you're using a non-matte concealer, it will reflect the light, making your pimple stand out and cast a white reflection. Secondly, make sure to use a full coverage concealer (I include the best matte, full coverage concealers at the top of this post). Thirdly, make sure to top the spot with powder so that the concealer doesn't budge.

Don't use too much product at once, as you can always work in layers if you don't have enough coverage. You can also use a green color corrector (which cancels our reddish tones) underneath your concealer for extra coverage.

In Conclusion

The best concealer for you depends on a few factors. By categorizing each type of concealer clearly, I hope I was able to help you make a better decision. Whether you're looking for full or light coverage, a matte or a natural finish, the cruelty-free options above are the best on the market. Thank you for purchasing cruelty-free products!

Dearest Suzana Rose & Cruelty-Free Kitty…kudos! I have read about….a zillion articles regarding concealers, as well as every other beauty product on the planet. Give or take a few. This article was the MOST informative, helpful, interesting, and honest by far. It was refreshingly delightful to read, causing a literally smile by mid-point. I am excited to have found this site and very thankful for all those involved in it’s collaboration. I have yet to explore further, but I felt compelled at this point to say, THANK YOU! I am a beauty product junkie and a thirsty sponge for all the (current & correct!) product information. I want to know what I’m putting on my skin, how it will perform & function, and how not only the product, but it’s manufacturing, will affect the body, Earth and it’s critters. For such a delicate well-balance, knowledge is key. Also, I work in the veterinary field so Cruelty-Free Kitty resonates with me ???? Again, many thanks for all your hard work and having a voice for those who can’t. Beauty & brain on, betches! ????????
