Why use body lotion?
Body lotions are essentially a moisturizer for your entire body. Thicker than the creams you may use on your face, they help to give your body a boost of hydration and moisture, leaving your skin feeling soft, smooth, and conditioned.
Regular use of body lotion also supports the all-important skin barrier.
The skin on the human body has three layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypodermis. Body lotion helps to nourish the top part of the epidermis, the stratum corneum, which serves as your body's frontline defense against toxins and germs.
Sometimes the skin barrier can be damaged by things like harsh soaps, sun exposure, allergens, or humidity, but the right moisturizer or lotion can help to keep it healthy.
Jojoba oil, for example, is a common lotion ingredient, and research suggests that this (as well as other plant oils) may be able to help repair damage to the skin barrier.
Ingredients like hyaluronic acid can also help your skin to retain vital moisture and limit water loss.
What is vegan body lotion?
Like a number of skincare products on the market, body lotions can sometimes include animal ingredients.
Tallow, for example, can sometimes show up on ingredient lists. Used to thicken creams, tallow is a type of animal fat, and is often derived from sheep or cows.
Super-hydrator squalene (known in its stabilized, hydrogenated form as squalane, with an a) is another common addition. And while it can be sourced from plants, it can also be harvested from sharks too. (Sharks produce squalene in their livers.)
Other animal ingredients sometimes used in moisturizers or lotions include lanolin (from sheep's wool), honey (produced by bees), and collagen (which often comes from fish or bovine sources).
But good news: the plant world is also filled with skin-boosting ingredients.
Shea butter, vegetable and fruit oils, cocoa butter, and coconut extract are just a few of the common vegan-friendly ingredients used across body care to hydrate, moisturize, and nourish your skin.
Best vegan body lotions
Technically, body lotions, creams, and butters are different things. But while lotions tend to be lighter and creams and butters are thicker, they all achieve a very similar moisturizing effect.
The type of product you use depends on your personal preference or skin type, so we've included a range of options below for you to choose from. And of course, every item on this list is cruelty-free. Animal testing has no place in your beauty bag.
