4 Skincare Resolutions Everyone Should Make For The New Year

I don’t know about you, but I love setting goals and resolutions every year. It helps me envision a better year ahead! I’m bringing in the new year with my top 4 skincare resolutions for happier, healthier skin. Although many grand resolutions can be daunting to fulfil, these are all simple and achievable.

Thank you to Andalou Naturals, the #1 best-selling natural skincare brand, for sponsoring this post. Andalou Naturals is also cruelty-free as well as the first beauty brand to be 100% non-GMO project verified.

On to the resolutions…

01. Going cruelty-free with ALL your skincare.

Of course, the first and most important skincare resolution is to switch to cruelty-free products. Animal testing is completely unnecessary, and there’s no good reason to support it in 2018 (or ever).

Many of the most popular skincare brands like Aveeno, Clean & Clear, Clearasil, Neutrogena and Simple are not cruelty-free. But there are ethical brands out there that offer the skincare products you need for your exact specific skin type and budget, so let’s keep voting with our money by supporting these brands instead.

02. Sticking to a skincare routine that’s appropriate for your skin type.

No matter how amazing a product is, if it isn’t right for your skin type, it could do more harm than good. Second only to going cruelty-free, I can’t think of a more important skincare resolution.

Great skincare brands like Andalou Naturals offer lines for every skin type, which makes skincare shopping so much easier. They offer an “Age Defying” line for dry and very dry skin with fine lines and wrinkles, a “Brightening” line for normal and combination skin which targets sun damage and hyperpigmentation, a “Clear Skin” line for oily and active skin with congested pores, and a “Quenching” line for parched and depleted skin in need of an extra boost of firmness.

Since I have sensitive skin, I’ve been trying out their “1000 Roses” line for sensitive skin, which is specially designed to soothe easily irritated, delicate and dry skin.

I found all the products in that line to be extremely gentle and moisturizing, and nothing caused any breakouts or irritations. The Rosewater Mask ($14.95) may be my new favorite hydrating mask, as it left my skin super soft after just one use. Other standouts for me were the CC Color + Correct ($19.95), which has added SPF, and the Moroccan Oil ($19.95).

The rose scent is present without being overpowering and is derived from natural, non-irritating ingredients. The packaging is a gorgeous shade of pink, perfect for displaying on your vanity. Plus, none of the products contain any synthetic colors or dyes.

03. Switching to products that don’t contain potentially harmful chemicals.

When it comes to skincare, especially for products that absorb into the skin, I try to go for natural brands that don’t use nasty preservatives or harmful chemicals.

The main ingredients I typically avoid in skincare are parabens, phthalates, and chemical sunscreens. Methylparaben for example has a harmful effect when exposed to sunlight among other health concerns. Phtalates are added to fragrance and are often undisclosed on labels, but they’re endocrine disruptors and quite unnecessary. For sunscreen, I go for physical sunscreens over chemical ones as they’re just as effective without any potential adverse effects.

Andalou Naturals uses nature-derived ingredients which are also organic, gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian, and non-GMO verified. Their products do not contain artificial fragrances or colors. As an added bonus, their ingredients are also sustainably sourced and fair trade.

04. Wearing sunscreen on a daily basis (even on overcast days).

While it is so easy to forget sunscreen especially on cloudy days, wearing a moisturizer, primer or foundation rated SPF 30 or higher is absolutely essential to protect your skin from the invisible radiation of the sun. This will not only keep skin looking healthier and younger, but will also help prevent damage and skin cancers.

See Also

While more easily detectable UVB (ultraviolet B) rays that cause sunburn are only present late morning and early afternoon, UVA (ultraviolet A) rays are present all day long regardless of cloud cover. A suncare product with SPF of 30 or higher will shield skin from 97% of the UVB rays, but the product must be labelled “broad-spectrum” for protection from both UVB and UVA rays.

Andalou Naturals offers lots of great suncare options, including their BB and CC creams and daily facial lotions, all of which have an SPF of 30 and broad-spectrum protection.

Where To Buy

If you’re interested in trying out some of the awesome products from Andalou Naturals, they can be found online at, Amazon, Ulta, Pharmaca, iHerb, Target, Walgreens and CVS or in person at Whole Foods and Sprouts.

  • One of my goals this year is to spread kindness! I plan to share little blessing cards with random strangers who look like they could use a little cheer as well as mailing to my friends & family throughout the year 🙂

  • Yes!! I love this line!! One of my new year’s resolutions is to stop getting in my own way and focus on being my best, healthiest, fulfilled, and creative self. I know this is a vague “resolution,” but I just signed a lease for an apartment of my own (after seven years of living with roommates), so I’m already on my way there.

  • My resolution is to save at least $1000 by the end of the year! I’ve never been able to save more than like $100 so this is gonna be a challenge haha

  • My resolution this year is not to buy any item until I finish all the backups I have, that way I will finish all the makeup/skincare that is not cruelty free and start with new, bunny aproved items 🙂

  • My new year resolution is to learn one Beyoncé dance. And to let go of “things”. I want a clutter free life and mind.

  • One of my New Years resolutions is to listen to my body and quit taking shortcuts! Nurturing my skin with a daily routine is one way I’m focusing on this.

  • My resolution is to buy cruelty free everyday! I am slowly re-vamping my beauty products and taking the time to do my research and make educated purchases. Feels good to do good ?? Thanks for your continued guidance and inspiration!

  • My resolution was to find a natural and cruelty free moisturizer sine the rest of my skin care is natural and cruelty free. I’ve been using one of Andalou Naturals moisturizers for about two weeks now and I love it. My skin is soft and hydrated and hasn’t broken out once.

  • Last year I went through ALL my products and made a commitment to only use cruelty free. This year, my resolution it to make sure I’m taking the time to use them even on days when I’m really busy or tired. When I take care of myself I am better able to take care of those around me. If I want my loved ones to strive to be their best, I need to encourage and support them by being my best!

  • One of my New Years resolutions is to take better care of myself (i.e. getting enough sleep, exercising, get my eyes checked, go to the doctor for annual checkups etc.)

  • One of my resolutions is to be more at peace with myself and my limitations! My physical disabilities and mental health limit what I do and can achieve, but that doesn’t meanthere’s no value to what I DO do!

  • I’ll be honest, no resolution this year. I’m planning my wedding in May and it’s all I can think about. In fact, my resolution might be to not let it make me crazy 😉

  • My new year’s resolutions are to educate myself about the skincare products I’m using, and go completely cruelty free in all aspects of my life, not just on skincare products.

  • My main resolution this year is to take more time for myself. Its something that often gets overlooked but even just five minutes of peace and deep thoughts makes such a difference in not only my health but my mood

  • Since I am already cruelty-free, my resolution has been to get my bf on board too! As he runs out of personal care items, I replace them with cf ones!

  • I also want to get down a recycling routine. It horrifies me the amount of paper/plastics I’ve been throwing away

  • I don’t set resolutions, but I set goals for the year! I have three goals centered around hobbies and personal growth, and they are taking an improv class, elevating my photography skills, and returning to my French studies. Your blog has been a HUGE help when I made the decision to go cruelty-free as a goal in 2017, and I love learning about new (to me) brands like Andalou Naturals!

  • My resolution is to take better care of myself! My kids are older now and I cannot use them as an excuse anymore!

  • I love these resolution ideas. Some I already had in mind were going beyond makeup and switching over all my hair and skincare to cruelty free. The sunscreen one seems like a good one to add, too. 🙂

  • New Years resolution is to be a minimalist. Only buy things I need and getting rid of things I don’t use regularly.

  • I’m just now learning about all of the harmful ingredients in skin care products. I’m so grateful to your website for this information!

  • Hey everyone! I have some big goals this year and one of them is to really use up a lot of products in my current collection so I may bring in lots of new cruelty free options!I have such a backstop (cruelty free and not) and I really want to make the full conversion this year into ALL cruelty free! ?

  • I don’t do New Years Resolutions because I’m fortunate enough to be living a life I’m very happy with but my goals for the year are to finish my Masters Degree and land a job with a NFL Team!

  • Thank you for the opportunuty! My resolution for this year is to take control of my well being, both physically and mentally. Healthier eating choices, healthier product purchases, and healthier thinking habits.

  • One of my new years resolution is to finish transitioning to all cruelty free cleaning products. Last year was beauty and hair products, this year its on to the household stuff!

  • I’ve gone cruelty free with my skincare and as well as for my baby! Anyway, resolution is to take time for self-care and read! I heart books.

  • Love Andalou. It’s one of my favorite brands. Vitacost also carries their products. One resolution of mine is to improve my mental health. Being kinder to myself will, I hope, enable me to treat others with more compassion.

  • I am so excited to try this new line! My number #1 resolution is to go cruelty-free and vegan in all of my skincare and cosmetics.

  • My biggest resolution is to record myself everyday. I’d like to improve my vocals and start making videos! I’ve been sticking to it so far

  • One of my New Years resolutions is to stop eating sugar and many packaged products. I am vegetarian, however I was in the old thing as most people, eating prepacked foods which are so full of unhealthy ingredients. I am starting a diet which is a close to nature as possible and have successfully left behind all sugary sweets. I love the fact that Andalou Naturals is Gluten Free! and for all of it’s other wonderful aspects 🙂

  • Mine is actually to go cruelty free!! No joke!!! And get more into makeup to feel better about myself.

  • Resolution – to educate others about the animal testing that is mandatory for any company that wants to sell their products there. Most people are unaware as was I. I have switched to a Canadian cosmetic company that does not sell in China and does not test on animals. Bye bye MAC – it was nice but now it’s not.

  • My resolution for 2018 is to live my best life- exercise daily, communicate mindfully, and to give selflessly. And when I say “give”, I mean to give of myself- that is my time, my energy, and my love. 2017 was such a transition year for me and there was a lot that I discovered about not only myself, but about those I form relationships with. I learned not to blame others or myself when things go wrong, and that is something I want to take with me into 2018 and beyond.

  • I have multiple resolutions, but one of them is sharing how to go cruelty-free with products! It has been very important to me for a long time, and I want others to know and understand why and how to go cruelty-free. I am a member of a pro-animal organization at University and we had an event where we talked about cruelty-free makeup, and I am hoping to do another one this semester!

  • I am already cruelty free (yey!!) So my goal is to learn about new products I havent tried and to spread the word and encourage others to go cruelty free as well!

  • One of my new years resolutions (even though I don’t really call it that, more of a goal) is to get back in the gym on a consistent basis.

  • Every skincare and home products I buy is cruelty-free because I am a bunny addict 🙂 I will try to do your sunscreen resolution on top of my resolutions to reduce waste and do more volunteering with animals shelters.

  • One of my New Years resolutions is to switch to cruelty-free cleaning products. First it was makeup/skincare. I want to be completely cruelty-free with everything eventually!

  • My new years resolution is not bring any more non-cruelty free products into my home and find good brands to switch over the few products I still have into cruelty free options as I finish them.

  • One of my resolutions is actually to take better care of my skin! And to lose a little bit of weight. I’m hoping if I take better care of my face and body I won’t need to wear as much foundation!

  • One of my new year’s resolutions for this year was to go cruelty free! I had been thinking about it for a while but just never actually made the switch. I’ve even encouraged some of my friends to try it as well and they’ve responded in such a positive way! Here’s to being cruelty free in 2018 xx

  • One of my new years resolutions (I have many!) was to eliminate all the non cruelty-free and chemical laden makeup and skincare products from my collection. I just threw out a ton of makeup, but I feel great. I want to start over with a clean slate. I am trying to apply this to all areas of my life!

  • One of my resolutions is to make homemade dog and cat food for my fur family and the temporary fosters we will have through out the year. Hoping this will keep them in tip top health.

  • My New Years resolution is to be consistent this year and stick with whatever changes/habits I’m trying to make. The two big ones that I’m currently working on are going vegan and buying only Cruelty free products!

  • My New Year’s resolution is to complete a 30 day yoga challenge in January. Almost there! Also, any new skin care products purchased are to be vegan and cruelty-free.

  • My goal is to find a cruelty-free skin care routine that is chronic pain friendly. And be kind to myself when I am too sore or exhausted to do the full routine.

  • One of my skincare related resolutions is to find cruelty-free options for my last holdouts: Eucerin Aquaphor and Dove deodorant. I love, love, love how healing Aquaphor is to my skin. I use it all year long, especially during these Midwest winters. I just won’t know what to do without it!
Another resolution is to make myself tolerate mushrooms. They are pretty gross, but so good for you. I feel like I’m missing out on all the nutrients! 🙂

  • I have been looking for a skin care routine that doesn’t have harmful chemicals and is cruelty free. Right now I have a mismatch of products, but I really want to find one with everything I need.

  • My resolution is to start switching out even more of my household products to cruelty free, like laundry detergent.

  • My new years resolution is to apply oil on my body after every shower. I even installed an in shower dispenser so it makes it easy and I don’t forget.

  • The packaging looks cute!! As for my New Year’s resolution, the biggest one for me this year is to finish paying my student loans. It has been one of my stressors this past year, so I’ll be glad to scratch that off my list.

  • My New Years resolution (for skincare) is to do a better job of moisturizing and cleaning my skin. I need to be careful with face products because of my rosacea, but thankfully there are cruelty free brands out here killing the game with products for my skin!

  • My New Year’s Resolution is to go entirely cruelty-free with all the beauty and hygiene products I use! I’ve already gone cruelty-free with my makeup, but I want to get cruelty free skincare, shower essentials, soap, etc.! Last year was the first time I really saw how prevalent and horrific animal testing is, so I do not want to do anything to support it. I also want to go through my clothes and donate what I don’t need or use. It’s been awhile since I’ve done that and I want to get back in the habit of doing it regularly.

  • I don’t make resolutions but one of my 2018 goals is to use the makeup I have on hand and if I don’t, to pass it on to someone else so that it doesn’t just collect dust.

  • I actually have a couple of resolutions in 2018! Firstly, I want to read at least one book a month…I’m currently reading Harvest for Hope: A Guide to Mindful Eating by Jane Goodall (highly recommended!). Next, I want to widen my cruelty free lifestyle by embracing minimalism and ethical brands. As I’m sure you know, many clothing brands aren’t cruelty free when it comes to their human labour. And last but not least, I want to encourage (but not pressure) others into going cruelty free!!

  • My resolution this year is to make time for life experiences: go see a live band, seek out new hiking routes, say yes to those last-minute invites, etc.!

  • I’ve being wanting to try new cruelty-free skin care for awhile. My new year resolutions are to be a better self, love myself, improve better self, and stop avoid problems.

  • I am hoping to go 100% cruelty-free by the end of this year! That and I want to get better at keeping in touch with friends who live out of state

  • I have been cruelty free for many years already so my New Year’s resolution is to find products that are both without chemicals/endocrine disruptors while also cruelty free. Very informative article on the Andalou products. Thank you! I will try them out.

  • My New Years resolution was to not people please anymore, and follow my own heart. It doesn’t mean to be disrespectful or non caring or even selfish, but you only get 1 life. I should shake some I can get out this tree?

  • I like the first 3 ideas and I already do them. 🙂

The 4th, however, is one of the main factors in the current huge vitamin D deficiency endemic. An estimated 50% of people are deficient in this vital nutrient formed mainly from sun exposure and whose production is completely halted at SPF 15+. 🙁 I had a brush with borderline severe deficiency last year and it was horrible!

The sun doesn’t cause cancer and ageing, toxins do. The sun is detoxifying and brings toxic substances to the surface for removal. Sometimes they can also react with sunlight once at the surface and cause problems. The best approach is to eat wholefoods vegan and keep poisons such as caffeine, alcohol and smoking erc to a minimum. It works, believe me! 🙂

    • Indeed, vitamin D deficiency is a big problem especially in places like Northern US, Canada, UK etc. However this is easily solved by taking a supplement and embracing a healthy plant based diet!
I must object however to your statement that the sun doesn’t cause cancer and aging! That is a proven fact backed by many decades of peer reviewed research. I’m all for an organic natural lifestyle (hence why I’m on this great website like you!) but respectfully I think you may be one of the many folks who unfortunately fell under the spell of certain pseudoscience that permeates a lot of the online “clean/organic/natural” community. I would implore you to read up on UV rays from legitimate sources (CDC, NHS, scientific journals etc.). Another great thing would be to talk to your dermatologist, they can explain this to you and put your mind at ease! I hope this doesn’t come across as rude or confrontational but I am very concerned for you and others who sadly have fallen prey to these myths. It is very personal to me because skin cancer runs in my family!

  • My resolution has been organization, organization, organization!!! My work schedule has literally switched my days with nights, so organization is key to not going insane. Ha!

  • My resolution for my skin is to find an amazing non-toxic, cruelty free, vegan, anti-aging line, that is also good for oily skin. And THEN ensuring I use it, every single day.

  • One of my new year’s resolutions in 2018 is to be more present- to look out into the world and into people’s eyes, rather than down at a screen.

  • I’ve gone cruelty free with my skincare already but I’m still trying to find the perfect products for my skin and I want to find more eco-friendly products that help lessen my environmental impact

  • I love the reminder about ingredients to avoid. When you’re a conscientious consumer, there’s a lot to think about. My resolution this year is to endorse cruelty free efforts to more people around me.

  • One of my resolutions is to get more sleep. It makes such a difference in how I feel throughout the day and really keeps my skin looking healthier, too.

  • I love the fact i decided to join the cruelty free community! I did so once i found Cruelty Free Kitty.

For welcome baskets when someone comes to visit overnight i include items that someone may have forgotten… cruelty free!

And for stocking stuffers for 3 – 20 and 30 something girls at Christmas, i took the cruelty free lists to Ulta and Sephora and bought makeup and skincare items. They loved it!

    To completely cruelty free 2018!

  • One of my resolutions is to meal prep. I find it easy to eat healthy during the day while at work but then want to eat everything at night and in the weekends when I’m home. Hopefully by prepping healthy snacks and meals I will do better.

  • I have many New Years’ resolutions- it’s too hard to pick just one! (: I want to fully cut meat out of my diet (currently eat chicken), make sure all beauty/cleaning brands I use are cruelty free (basically everything I buy), balance my time + energy, read an hour a day of something educational, have more patience /kindness, strengthen my trust in God, figure out the perfect skin care routine for my dry skin, eat more greens, & not overthink/ overplan so much. Fingers crosssed I can check these things off at the end of the 2018!?

  • I’m honestly not a big fan of New Year’s Resolutions because I believe that a resolution can be made at any time. So my biggest resolutions are to continue sharing love with everyone and staying cruelty free in as many as my skincare products as possible

  • I wanted to try and keep up with my skin care routine and keep fighting for cruelty free cosmetics and skin care.

  • So my New Year resolution is to completely stop using cruelty products. Near the end of last summer I completely threw out any makeup I owned that was not cruelty free. This year I’ve moved on to hygiene and skin products and hope to reach my goal!

  • My new years resolution was to transition to a cruelty free lifestyle! I’m currently using up all my products that are not CF and following blogs like this to make sure my purchases are cruelty free!

  • My resolution is to be more mindful when it comes to senseless “impulse” shopping and truly only buy what I need – and care more for quality than quantity.

  • My New Year’s Resolution is to stop being so hard on myself, focus on the positives, and remember that any progress at all still counts. 🙂

  • My New Years resolution was to stop buying bottles of water everywhere (e.g. eating out, at the movie theatre etc)! Need to cut down on my waste!

  • My resolution is to focus on being the best version of myself I can be and to spread love and joy to my family and friends!

  • This year I would really like to use up the skincare and makeup products I have. I want to restrict what i buy and just focus on what i have instead of the newest hyped items.

  • I want to set a goal of wearing sunscreen everyday and atleast once a week try a mask to help with any skin issues.

  • One of my resolutions is to do more with less. Every time I clean out my cupboards, closets, fridge there is either waste or things that have gone unused/not worn. I can do better

  • One of my resolutions is to set aside time for mini rituals that pamper myself and rebalance my body and mind, so that I can be the best mom, wife, and friend that I can be!

  • I never make resolutions because it just adds pressure. I do, however, set goals for myself throughout the year. 🙂

  • I didn’t create my New Year’s resolution until February, but I plan to go cruelty-free. Throughout 2018, I will be tackling health, beauty, and household cleaning products. Your site has been my go-to. Thank you for sharing all this great information!

  • Now that I’m vegan, I decided to only use vegan products. Having a minimalist, vegan, organic skincare routine made my skin better because there aren’t any harmful chemicals and they’re even cruelty-free! I’m so interested in beauty oils right now. I’m currently using sunflower oil as a moisturizer 🙂

  • I would appreciate it if you didn’t gender your posts. As a nonbinary individual, it’s particularly isolating to come into the year 2018 with yet another “every GIRL should make” buzz-word title. Though it may not seem hurtful, it is. If you could keep things gender neutral, I’m sure a lot of trans people who use your site would be very grateful. Thanks
