They've assured us that they remained cruelty-free after their acquisition by Estée Lauder. Their status didn't change and they don't sell products to mainland China, where animal testing is required by law.
These are the products I'll be reviewing in this post:
- Better Than Sex Mascara ($23) -- vegan
- Born This Way Absolute Perfection Foundation ($39) -- vegan
- Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer ($30) -- vegan
- Natural Love Eye Shadow Collection ($59)
Better Than Sex Mascara
The Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara ($23) has one of my all-time favorite cruelty-free and vegan mascara formulas. It's extremely volumizing, and the hourglass-shaped wand makes it easy to apply. I love that it's incredibly buildable without looking clumpy.
This mascara also won our best cruelty-free mascara reader poll by a landslide! It was by far the best mascara according to our readers.
Too Faced also makes a waterproof version of this mascara. It should be noted that the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara is vegan, but the Better Than Sex Waterproof mascara is not vegan, as it contains beeswax.
Born This Way Absolute Perfection Foundation
The Born This Way Foundation ($39) has an oil-free formula intended to "masterfully diffuse the line between makeup and skin". I would describe it as a medium-to-full coverage foundation, but it doesn't feel heavy or cakey. It does have a luminous finish, so if you have combination or oily skin I would definitely recommend setting with powder.
I tried out the shade Snow, which seems to be a good match for my very fair yellow-based complexion. The foundation comes in 18 varying shades, but Too Faced could possibly benefit from adding a few more shades for the deepest of skin tones.
I don't typically wear foundation, so I prefer how it looks when mixed with a little moisturizer and/or liquid illuminator, blended in with a beauty sponge.
Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer
The Chocolate Soleil Bronzer ($30) comes in three shades: Milk Chocolate, Chocolate and Dark Chocolate. The Milk Chocolate shade (pictured above) works beautifully for my fair complexion, and I find that it is perfectly balanced between warm and cool.
I was concerned about the chocolate scent at first, as I typically avoid products with fragrance due to my sensitive skin. I was pleasantly surprised that my skin had no adverse reaction to the fragrance, perhaps because it is scented with real cacao fruit powder rather than artificial chemicals.
Overall, I think this is a great bronzer for a variety of skin tones, and I would definitely purchase it again! I think it would make a super cute gift packaged together with some real chocolates.
Natural Love Eye Shadow Collection
This new springy palette from Too Faced called Natural Love Eye Shadow Palette ($59) contains 30 eyeshadows, and includes shades from their best-selling eyeshadow palettes as well as some new exclusive shades. If you have been looking to test out one of their palettes, I think this is a great one to try because it contains such a huge variety of shades in multiple finishes.
Let me know in the comments below if you'd like to see a full review with swatches!

If Too Faced Products are made in China how can they be Cruelty Free? China requires testing.
let me preface this by saying i don’t know what your policy is on cruelty free companies owned by companies that test on animals but Estee Launder bought out 2 faced last year… and they test on animals “where required by law”
I love your blog. 🙂 I recently (since Nars going back to testing) decided to purchase only cruelty free makeup and your blog helps me a LOT!!!! I love Too Faced and I will still support them.
Some people thinks they shouldn’t be considered as cruelty-free, but I don’t think it’s the right way of thinking.
Exemple, if you are vegan should you stop buying from groceries just because thoses sell meat and your money is given to meat eaters and the meat industry?! It’s the same thing for Sephora ! You still encourage a company who sells tested product and make money from them. So at least you buy only on official cruelty free brands website, you do contribute in the continuation of animal testing.
That’s why I do feel that some people are hypocrite about the cause.
Because unless you are vegan who buys only from vegan and cruelty free brands, you contribute in a way to animal torture and you shouldn’t judge brands owned by company who test.
Those brands could have decided to change back like Nars did only to make more money, but they didn’t. Because their principle and values worth much more than the money they could have done by selling their product in China.
Everyone has his own limits and shouldn’t be judged for it. I eat meat and I don’t think I will stop eventually. So in a way I do still contribute in animal cruelty, BUT I do think by purchasing only cruelty free makeup I make a step forward. It’s a small step, but if I’m not the only one to do it. In the end, we will be able to DO a difference.
The best list ever I found. Thank you.
I also wrote on bb creams, so one can chose the best according to her skin.
Let have a look.

By buying a TF product, money is going to EL, which is going to labs in China that test on animals. 🙁 I know it is hard, I miss TF too (and many other brands)! But every time I see photos of animals being tortured, I decided I can find another brand that won’t assist a larger company in perpetuating this horrible practice.
If Ester Lauder own them then in my book they are not cruelty free because when you buy their products you are giving money to Ester Lauder that is why i stopped buying Bodyshop products because Loreal own them and i am certainly not giving money to them!!!
Ah Too Faced (along with Kat Von D) are at the top of my wishlist for so long. Need to save a bit more to get my hands on these gorgeous brand, but i know it’s worth it! xo
Melodie

I’ve always wanted to try more Too Faced products than I have. The Natural Love palette appeals to me, but I’ve heard mixed things about it (Plus it’s $60!!)
I’m probably one of the few people that actually doesn’t like the BTS mascara. I’ve tried it twice as samples & both times I didn’t like it. It’s nice to know that the Born This Way foundation is more of a luminous finish; I have combo skin that leans more toward the oily side, so I prefer a matte finish in my foundation.
I really like their Melted Matte liquid lipsticks though! They’re smooth, ridiculously long-lasting & they don’t dry out the way a lot of liquid lipsticks do 🙂
Awesome, thanks so much for sharing! I also love the Melted Matte Lipsticks, especially the shade Melted Melon. 🙂
