The following list consists of companies that are not cruelty-free. Its main source is PETA, and we’ve supplemented it with our own research. These brands engage in animal testing OR fund animal testing in some capacity, the most common example being by testing on animals where the law requires it. Also note that some of the brands listed here misleadingly label themselves as “cruelty-free”, a term that is not regulated.

Big Corporations Who Test On Animals

Most of these brands are owned by a few giant corporations: L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, Procter & Gamble, Clorox, Johnson & Johnson, S.C. Johnson, Colgate-Palmolive, Reckitt Benckiser, Church & Dwight, Unilever, and Henkel.

These companies own the majority of the brands we commonly find in most retailer stores and drugstores, and they’re making no real efforts to change their unethical policies.

There are however two exceptions, the first one being Colgate-Palmolive, which have agreed to gradually change their policy. PETA currently lists Colgate-Palmolive as “working toward regulatory changes to reduce the number of animals used for testing”. This does NOT mean the company is or will be cruelty-free in the near future! It’s only a small step in the right direction, and the company still DOES test on animals at this point.

The second exception consists of a few select brands. While in most cases, brands that are owned by companies that test on animals are not cruelty-free, L’Oreal is one of the few companies to own brands that have kept their ethical stances and have remained cruelty-free under the ownership. The same goes for Too Faced and Becca (now owned by Estee Lauder but still cruelty-free) and Tom’s of Maine (Colgate-Palmolive). All the brands mentioned on this list, however, do test on animals.

Please note that this list is not exhaustive. This list only includes companies that claimed they test on animals at some point, or sell in China; there are many other companies who remained silent about their animal testing policy.

I was searching about brands that test on animals to avoid them. this is helpful, thanks for sharing

  • Reena says:

Thank you for this. I am writing a school argument about why animal testing is bad and this helped a lot.

  • Sally Jones says:

Thank you for making this list I had no idea and never using any of these products again!

  • Daniela says:

    Hi!
I’m a former lawyer working in compliance, based in Europe, and I’m curious to know how cosmetics brands usually answer your question about being sure that their suppliers do not test on animals.

I know that the EU legislation requires animal testing for any chemical substance that gets produced or imported into the EU over a certain amount. The tests are for environmental and workers’ safety assessments.

The EU ban on cosmetic testing only applies to safety declaration (for cosmetic use), not chemical regulation compliance.

This means that any new-ish cosmetic ingredient is still required to get tested, except for well-known substances that require no additional data (i.e., vitamin C).

I’m curious if brands address this issue because some companies in your cruelty-free list definitely use recently developed cosmetic ingredients, and it sounds strange that these new molecules do not get a safety assessment.

  • Eliza Kelley says:

This is disgusting how could do many brands do this and popular ones too even cleaning products

  • HARPER OAKES says:

I thought wet n wild tested on animals

  • Tabitha says:

    Hello,

Thank you for sharing this. I used to buy their products thinking they were effective and the only option. The more research and shopping I do, the more I realize there are MANY MANY AMAZING brands out there that do not subject innocent and helpless animals to the torture of animal testing, and are just as effective, if not better. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. Watching videos of rabbits being restrained while a lab worker drops poison into their eyes is horrifying and enough to make you angry and sick. Spend your money wisely and choose cruelty free!

  • Mercè says:

Thank you very much for your efforts and kind information. For me it’s not easy to give up sun protects (I don’t like minerals) as brands as Vichy or La Roche Posay…

  • carson says:

Can you make a printable list of this as well, so when I’m shopping I can have a PDF or a printed version with me, please

  • Kelly Schmidt-Wanzer says:

I am shocked by the amount of products, I use, that are tested on animals!! I am discussed! I will work hard at products that are animal cruelty free! Thank you for this list!!

  • Nancy Sanders says:

My heart is broken???????? I own so many of these products. I can’t use them. I WONT USE THEM! I can’t give them away. So….now what? I’m not even comfortable donating these products! Smh ????????‍♀️ do you happen to know if L’Oréal is “in the process “ of going cruelty free, and stop selling in China? Those greedy bastards! Thank you for reading my pathetic rant ????????????

    Sincerely,
    Nancy

  • Denise says:

Thank you for compiling these lists and helping us all be better consumers.

  • Sarah Miller says:

Thanks for all the research you do so we don’t have to. I’m so grossed out by all the brands I didn’t realize would be on here. I have some serious research to do myself to find replacements for what I was using before. Keep up the amazing work! ❤️

  • Becky says:

this website was really helpful and i cant beleive how sad it is that so many brands still test on animals

  • Colette says:

    Thank u!

  • Liz Bullock says:

    Dear Cruelty Free Kitty,
Hi. My wide eyed Vegan stare just got a little more dazed. So, today I’m ditching my…
    Arm & Hammer detergent
    Downy fabric softener
    Bounce dryer sheets
    and Colgate toothpaste
So sad. I’m fragrance & chemical sensitive. And broke. But, nothing is worth torturing animals.
Whatever discomforts my journey takes me on, It’s nothing compared to an animal alone in a sterile cage with no friends or toys or grass to play on…while the evil scientist makes them violently ill. No, I won’t miss my former brands.
Also, I’ve tried Blueland surface cleaners, but they weren’t effective for me. Also sheets laundry detergent, also didn’t like.
But, Method surface cleaner & glass cleaner are very effective, great light natural scent, leaping bunny certified, and safe to use around pets and kids. Also, affordable economy size refill, and, much less expensive in certain stores. So, maybe I’ll try their laundry soap.
It’s really not that difficult. Once we realize that we’ve been tricked into paying for cruelty. Success is always the best revenge!
    Luv ya Kitty Kitty!
    Best always, Liz

  • Louie Harvey says:

    Hello

I am an art student who is currently working on an art project around banning animal testing and saving animals. Is there any way I could set up an interview or speak to someone such as a manager or higher up in the company asking a few questions in order to help with my project? This would extremely help to aid my project and would mean a lot!

    Many thanks
    Louie Harvey

Thank you for sharing this information we really appreciate it! We are big fans, we follow you on tiktok and pinterest!

  • D Coughlin says:

I am sick at this list.
I am slowly leaving those on the list.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Pari says:

Thanks. I keep checking back. This is insanely cruel. I used to only shop luxury make up but they are not getting a dime from me now. Why do they insist on torturing animals! They should torture themselves!! This is so cruel. Why would anyone shop from them when there is literally bloodless beauty out there! Insane. Thanks for spreading awareness.

  • Jan says:

I hate cruelty to innocent animals, if they want to do testing, then they should do it on themselves.

  • Maria Eugenia says:

Thank you very much for the information. I don’t see Loreal, isn’t he testing anymore? Thanks a lot

  • Charlotte says:

I’m so upset there are so many. I’m glad I haven’t bought that many of these as I am Australian I really want this to stop.

  • Andi says:

Wow This just upsets Me. What a crazy world we have animals should not be treated this way this is this is not OK

  • Daniela says:

Bath and body works says they are cruelty free though 🙁

  • Aleta Dowell says:

Why does it say Cruelty Free Kitty?? When it is THE OPPOSITE!!!! ????

    • Teresa says:

This is showing the products that are NOT cruelty free. They also have a list of products that ARE cruelty free. Please go read from the beginning

  • Deborah Sigmin says:

I will not be buying any of these products that test on animals. If you can abuse a live animal for your gain to make money on your product then you are a heartless company with no remorse.

  • Eileen Sianez says:

I never knew all that much about the dear animals being tortured for stupid peoples so called greater good!!Now I know and I am pushing the news to all.

  • Maggie says:

this was very helpful to my assignment, thank you for informing me.

  • Emma Cooper says:

    Good morning,
I’ve recently changed skin care products and now use Tropic but I’m not seeing Tropic on any list? Can you help at all with this, they state they are cruelty free and vegan based? Also looking for Limelife by Alcone? Not on a list who also state cruelty free. Many thanks Emma Cooper xx

  • Sherry says:

    How can we stop this?

    • kStasK says:

Buy only organic and cruelty-free products.
Show it to your family and they will show it to someone else. Start small and then it would help more and more. 🙂

  • Sharon says:

So disheartening to see so many progressive companies, especially the likes of Origins. I can’t find Stella McCartney fragrances in any list. I know her fashion is line is vegan and I would have thought her fragrances were cruelty free but I have no idea! I’ll have a look on the website. Thank you for this! I always double check now before I buy anything. Is it cruelty free? Yes, you can buy it! Makes life so much easier!

  • Kate irving says:

    Thankyou

Do you know if Jo Loves tests their fragrances on animals please?

    Best

    Kate

  • Sofia says:

I hate that they experiment with bunnies it’s horrible!

  • Saralee.mua says:

I have been buying from a small cosmetic Brand in Lebanon and when I emailed them and many more to find out since they don’t have website, no one answered. So i posted on my Instagram Stories and tagged them and they answered saying they are cruelty free and GMP Certified so my question is:
Is a company considered Cruelty- Free if they are GMP Certified?

  • Bhuvana says:

We do something for against animal testing????
They have to feel pain irritation…but they can’t expose????…
    Please do something

  • Sarah Mark says:

I use many of these brands as I was unaware of the horrible testing they used. Seeing all of the names of popular brands was disgusting. I didn’t even think to look out for it, but now I will. This practice needs to end. Please share this website with others to get the word around.

  • Phoenix says:

omg so sad! this needs to stop, I’m only in grade 6 but I’m doing a HUGE project on animal testing and i will be giving your page credit tysm!

  • Barbara says:

I’ve been told by Coty that they do not do animal testing on any of their products.

  • Anastasia says:

I can’t believe it! Europe has always seemed so humane, and all well-known brands, it turns out, do it, it so devalues their importance and coolness! No more Chanel Guerlain and Loreal !!!

  • Dawn-Marie Donne says:

Thank you so much for forwarding this list, and to you dedication to the welfare of our amazing animals.

  • YWood says:

Can you tell me if Freda and Bailey are a certified cruelty free brand. They state they are on the website but I have learned not to believe everything companies say.

  • Malia says:

Are you sure Bumble and Bumble is not cruelty free? I saw on Peta that they do not test on animals.

  • Shannon says:

I thought this was a thing of the past

  • Marsha Rouse says:

Thank you for compiling. I will never use these products again.

  • Aaliyah says:

The amount of companies that test on animals is absolutely disgusting!! And half of these i didn’t even know they tested on animals!! I hope they soon realize that this is so wrong on so many different levels

  • this is honestly heartbreaking

  • Delaney says:

hey! i was just doing a little digging and benefit released an official legal statement, saying they do not test on animals. i could be wrong but i don’t think they belong on this list

  • Angelica Amanda Valdez Dominguez says:

    Save Ralph

  • margaret kerr says:

I am shocked I thought in this day and age where we can send men to the moon and are going to send men too mars and we can’t find other ways to test these products ,it should be made legal that they have to tell people that what they are selling is tested on animals. I have bought many cosmetics from qvc and if I knew I would not have bought them I contacted them about this and have had no reply but I will be contacting them again.

  • Stella says:

This makes me want to sob.

  • Fabian Juan says:

    Muy mal esa empresa

  • Samantha Cobos says:

CeraVe has mande very celar, that they do not taste their products on animals. So, are they o aren’t they?

  • Bhindi says:

    I’ll second that! ????????

  • Gemma Mason says:

I really appalled by all these companys which I use.

  • Shocking I think the public need to be aware that this barbaric act is still happening I really thought that it had been banned wait till you see the list of companies who test on poor defenceless animals causing so much pain it needs to stop I will certainly be checking in future any products I buy are not tested on animals

  • Eileen says:

Thank you for this list ? I’ve been using Philosophy products because I believed she was told by them that they were cruelty free ????????could you please exsplain in more detail?

  • Sheryl White says:

Hi, I was wondering if aldi lacura products are cf and also I’m looking for a cf reasonably priced sunscreen,

    Thanks ????????

    • Bhindi says:

Hi Sheryl. NONE of Aldi’s products are tested on animals at any stage. That goes for hygiene, beauty, babycare and laundry products. That’s why I stock up when I can as I don’t live near a branch. Their products win accolades year on year up against overpriced, famous brands, so if Aldi can do it, why can’t they? Disgusting and heartwrenching. Asda’s own brands are also cruelty free. Keep reading labels and google before you buy ????

  • Rhonda Ladson says:

I never thought of looking for toothpaste and feminine hygiene items on the cruelty free list. Everytime I read your emails, I am sickened by this. Money, money is what drives these companies. How can you be so cruel to an animal who can’t defend itself. My hope is they bite the bastard’s.

  • THANK YOU A LOT FOR THIS LIST

  • Cherry moore says:

I can’t believe so many products still being tested on animals

  • Linda Gladstone says:

After viewing your list of companies that test on animals, I was shocked to find my loyalty to Lysol & other brands I believed were cruelty-free, were NOT! THANK YOU so much for this list, and for ALL of you research and efforts for our cherished animal kingdom who do not have a voice to these injustices by us humans!!

Thank you so much for this list and the work that you do.

  • Sue says:

Please add Miller Harris to your list (niche perfumes) which boast of being ‘ethical’ but allow others to test on animals if ‘ required by law’.

  • Dana Hawkins says:

Hi, I shop with QVC UK and I have just called them to ask if a brand they sell named Australian Bodycare test on animals. They have just told me that NONE of their brands test on animals. However they have just started selling Estee Lauder so I dont understand how this can be true. Is there anyway you can find out for me if QVC UK sells Brands that DO or DO NOT test on animals please? Many thanks. Dana

    • YWood says:

Hi so glad you’ve asked this question. I have been trying to delve into the beauty brands sold on QVCuk as I also buy from them and am getting very mixed messages. Can I add my plea for cf Kitty to look into it.

  • quirsa says:

Good morning. As far as I can see on PETA List, wet n wild do not test on animals. Check it if you please 😉

  • Nicki says:

Cerave does not test on animals. I don’t know where you get your information from, but they do not. Please DO NOT send me anything.

  • Annoyed at your retail ads says:

Can’t ever read the list or search bc of your annoying pop up ads trying to sale products that DO test animals!!!!

Either be a commercial website or info site but choose one!!!!!

  • Pebbles the Funny Bunny says:

I heard Dove and St. Ives was certified to be cruelty free earlier this year. Is it not cruelty free Or did you include them in the list because they are sold in China?

  • Francine says:

Thank you for doing this work. It is incredibly helpful. I have been trying to find out about a brand Oligo. It seems their hair care products are cruelty free but I’m not sure about the color line. Wondered if you knew of them ?
    Again thank you so much!!?

  • Francesca Smith says:

Wet n wild don’t test on animals tho?

  • Maegha says:

Hi Suzi, could you please tell us whether Surface brand is cruelty-free? The reason I ask is because I have curly hair and it can be hard to find salons that specialize in curly hair care and products. Surface is one of the hair care brands that salons in my area use and this particular salon is a lot cheaper than the ones I’ve found that use DevaCurl, so I just wanted to confirm. The brand does claim to be completely vegan. Thanks so much for creating this site and all your wonderful resources!

    – A fellow animal lover and vegan

    • Vicky says:

      Hi Maegha,

I don’t know if you’ll see this, but a really good product for curly hair is Curl Keeper by Jonathan Torch and it’s vegan. I’ve been using it for years on my curly hair and it’s amazing. I would highly recommend it!

  • Natsumi says:

I purposely purchase product tested on animals
Your don’t support is my do support!

I blacklist the leaping bunny symbol and thanks for pointing out who I need to avoid.

I also love fur coats and killing animals for profit

  • Iro says:

Crueltyfreeintl has announced on Instagram that Estee Lauder companies are now cruelty free! ✌️✌️

  • bobbie sheets says:

I’m very disappointed to find out that I have indeed been using and have given my money to some cruel companies. I WON’T make that mistake again! Thank you so much for this comprehensive list! Very helpful. It just blows my mind that this world is so crappy that ppl will actually torture animals for money. But that is not nearly as hard to believe as the ppl who will give these companies without a care. Some out of ignorance, I know. I was one of them. But now that I know….. it just gives me this awful feeling I can’t explain to think about what might actually go on. All in the name of “beauty”. All in the name of “business” and the almighty dollar. Very sad. smh

  • Anne says:

Thank you very much for this very systematic article. I am astonished to find that many of these products are sold in Danish supermarkets taking into consideration that products tested on animals are forbidden in Europe. People generally think that products such as Sanex, Zendium and Yves Rocher are owned by environmentally responsible people and are not aware that many of these sell to China or have other brands tested on animals. I would really like to see all of these brands taken down from the shelves in the supermarket.

  • Zizi says:

From my point of research L‘occitane and Nivea do not test on animals at any production stages.

  • Melissa says:

  • Lydia says:

Now that Estee Lauder, which does animal testing, bought The Ordinary skincare company, will The Ordinary remain cruelty free?

  • Megan says:

Dove now has a PETA cruelty free badge.

  • Andreea Gray says:

Hi! thank you so much for putting together this list! I’ve been cruelty free for just a bit under 1.5 yrs and while it took a little to navigate and find my CF alternatives, there are indeed plenty that are even cheaper than the brands that test on animals and better!

I was wondering if The White Company is CF (on their website it says they don’t test, nor their suppliers. But nothing about 3rd parties… ) – Just got some products as a present and while I rather go ” when in doubt don’t use” , my husband seems keen to use it (still working on converting him, one toothpaste at a time!)
    Thanks!

  • Amanda says:

It sucks that so many huge corporations test on animals! But I was under the impression that Bath and Body Works was cruelty-free. At least on their products (lotions and body washes anyway) it says they don’t test on animals. Could you clear this up for me? Thanks!

  • alex says:

You may want to recheck this list… Unilever as of 2019 is no longer conducting animal testing and is peta certified..

  • Psilla says:

Hi! I just have heard in radio L’Oreal commercial where they saying they don’t test, and have not tested anything on animals for last 30 years unless required by law of country that they sell in (china I guess?) – is it a revolution then, or just a commercial hoax?
    only info i’ve found: https://www.loreal.com/sustainability/l'or%C3%A9al-answers
    https://www.loreal-paris.co.uk/faq

Please help! because if that’s true it would be a game changer!

  • Cynthia Surface says:

Hi there, I am a hairstylist and colourist, and I currently work in a salon that carries some brands that I was curious about and I can receive no information on, I would like to know if Kuene is tested on animals or sold in China. It would be so helpful if there is a list for professional grade hair colour, I did look at yours above but not a complete list. Here are the brands that I am curious about Surface, Davines, Kuene, alaparf.
The only three confirmed cruelty free are Kevin Murphy, organic Colour systems, Paul Mitchell.

    • Maegha says:

As someone with curly hair looking to get a cut at a salon, I am also curious about Surface brand!

  • Mathilde GON says:

I’m trying to do a search and nothing is coming up for any of these is there a glitch maybe? Like I had it narrowed down at first but then did one for all of it and still coming back saying there is a zero result match?

  • Annie says:

I think my heart stopped when I saw Pat McGrath! But I just looked at her FAQ on patmcgrathlabs.com and it says they don’t test on animals ??‍♀️ I’m totally not second guessing your research, I’m just confused.

  • Starr says:

Hi! I’m a frequent visitor to your site to find out about brands but, I have so many love beauty and planet products and all of them say not tested on animals on the bottle so I don’t know if what you have on this list about this brand is 100% true. I feel like if they tested on animals they wouldn’t be putting it on the label that they don’t.

  • Anna Gonzales says:

  • Rat-Man says:

  • Nikole says:

  • Tashina Ells says:

I’m curious, my bottle of VO5 says the product isn’t tested on animals?… are they are lying or what?

  • Megan Ladd says:

I believe that Caudalie is now vegan and cruelty-free.

  • Kelsie says:

I’m trying to figure out if Eucerin is actually not cruelty free. I see it on your list here but I’ve also seen it on their website that they don’t test on animals and haven’t since before 2004? That they use human testing And that they are trying to help get animal testing banned. So I’m just looking for clarity on this since it’s literally the only lotion I use that doesn’t make my skin more dry, and I can’t seem to find a good swap for it. Thank you!

  • Aurora says:

HI! I have Made a resourch and I found that Yves Rocher doesn’t test on animals since 1989. Xoxo

  • Charlotte Freeman says:

    I don’t trust PETA

  • Audrey says:

Wait I’m confused. I bought La Roche Posey whilst in Europe. Europe banned the sale of products with animal testing in 2013 in Europe or elsewhere. So why is the brand listed as not cruelty free?

  • Yes says:

How do we get animal testing banned around the world? Its bullshit to get it banned in US but ok in China.

  • Britta says:

Does anyone know if beautycounter is cruelty free?

  • Sofía says:

Hello, according to Tony Moly’s official website “Do you test on animals?
No, we do not! We love animals as much as we love you and would never test any of our products on them.” Is this true? I’ve been hearing so much mixed information about this brand, and I have no idea where is the proof behind any of the claims, can you help me?

  • Leshae says:

So I was just in a dollar general and I noticed on the back of the EOS products, they now say “not tested on animals.” Does this mean they’ve now become cruelty free?

  • Melissa Pötgens says:

Do you have any source material as to how you found out that certain companies are guilty of animal testing? Oriflame for example, is one of the founding companies that hasn’t done animal testing since 1967, as THEY claim. So seeing them on this list, makes me really curious to read any source material that says otherwise? I’ve been using Oriflame for years because of the fact that they claim they don’t test on animals, so if that’s a lie, I’d really love to read articles in which this comes forward. So if you have any source material on this, I’d be very grateful!

  • Oprah says:

You said that Loreal has started hollowing the ethical path. But then why is it still in the list of companies that do animal testing (is it because of its policies for China only)

  • Laura Vick says:

On the bottle of body wash I got from Bath and Body works it states “We do not test on animals” is this not true???

  • Emma Leiah says:

I actually reached out to Bath and body works and they said they have never tested any of there products on animals and they have always been cruelty free in that regard, although they can’t guarantee that all there products are “vegan” based on ingredients differing from product to product. However they are cruelty free and even mentioned that the labels on there products even mention that they never test on animals as well.

Not sure where you’re getting your information from as it seems all scattered. So i’m just going to assume you’re an uncredible blogger and skewing your facts to get more clicks on your page.

It sucks because some of us genuinely want to know which brands are cruelty free and not, don’t make up nonsense and misguide people.

    • Suzana Rose says:

Did you ask them if they test on animals where required by law or allow third-parties to test on their behalf? This is their policy: “Bath & Body Works policy prohibits the testing of our branded products, formulations and ingredients on animals except in rare cases when required by government regulations. Through our involvement in the Institute for In Vitro Sciences, we are supporting research to develop alternative non-animal methods which we believe will ultimately result in the elimination of animal testing worldwide.”

Translation: not cruelty-free. Victoria’s Secret is in the same boat and owned by the same parent company, and they’re on PETA’s list of companies who test on animals.

I posted on Lancome Facebook page and they responded:

  • Karly says:

Hi there I am currently doing a college essay paper on stopping animal testing and so it would be really helpful if you could let me know where your sources are coming from. I’ve looked on some of these product’s websites but they don’t just come out and say they test on animals, so I was hoping you could tell me where you are getting your information from or refer me to someone. Thanks so much.

  • Raminta says:

Dear Suzana, thank you for this list! I was sad though to find out that Biotherm is not cruelty-free…I was assured when I was buying their body lotion in Denmark that they do not test on animals but your information contradicts to that. Their body lotion was super good for my sensitive and prone to allergies and rashes skin… How do you make sure that Biotherm tests on animals? I would appreciate your answer!

  • CarolCats says:

    DOES THYMES TEST ON ANIMALS?

“We at Thymes do not test products on animals. We guarantee the safety of our products by using ingredients that have been used reliably for many years, along with effective amounts of preservatives common in cosmetics. These preservatives are non-toxic and non-irritating, helping to safeguard the quality of the products you buy.” I will not purchase Thymes bath products since this company does not provide any CF information on their suppliers.

  • Sasha says:

Does anyone know about sas & Company (who make Storm Flower perfume, by Cheryl Cole)? I did email them to ask if they test on animals but no response yet

  • Jess says:

Is OGX cruelty-free again? I don’t see it on either list

  • Beatriz says:

I thought Yves Rocher didn’t test on animals…? Or is it because they sell in China?

  • Dasa says:

I’m so mad at Avon! As I never went deeply into the subject, I always thought the company is cruelty free as there is a note that they do not test on anmimals, but that is not the same as cruelty free. Another thing, they provided a notice that they need to test their products in order to enter into the China market. These companies should vanish for misleading their customers.

  • Iggie says:

Could you please confirm about Eucerin? I used use their products before I went cruelty free and was double checking now, just because they have some pretty unique products that used to work for me really well. Their website states that they are cruelty free and describes some of their research methods, but makes no mention of ingredients or disclaimer “unless required by law”? I am struggling to find out more info.
Thank you for your work, it is massively helpful!

  • Donnie says:

I have a question actually. I am totally 100% on board with cruelty free and I am trying to be more conscious of what I am supporting as far as my products go. However, how can pet food NOT be animal tested? I mean I know I personally would like my cat food to be cat-approved because that’s the only thing that makes sense. Also, how are diapers and tampons tested on animals? Some of these things on this list don’t have chemicals at all. So how does that work? Thanks in advance.

  • Nikole says:

Does Weleda test on animals? Their website says no (vaguely), but other websites say they sell in China, but it doesn’t have to be tested. That seems like it isn’t cruelty-free. Am I wrong?

  • Jennifer says:

Thank you very much for providing this information. Now that I am aware I will no longer be purchasing makeup from these brands!

  • Sage says:

Why is PET food that’s tested on animals bad?

  • Anaïs says:

L’OCCITANE does not and has never tested its products, its active ingredients or its raw materials on animals at any point in the product development or manufacturing process.

  • Chloe says:

    Hi!
I just want to say thank you for creating this list. I’ve always been conscious of using CF products but sometimes I’d be a bit slack and buy them because I either didn’t check or I just assumed they would be CF. However, as of this year I’m aiming to be completely CF but as you can tell from this list, it’s actually pretty difficult to find a brand that doesn’t test on animals! I’d love to be able to share a link to this post with my followers on my Instagram and blog, if that’s okay with you!

    Thanks,
    Chloe

  • Angie says:

I have a question. H20 Plus is currently listed although on their website they say: “H2O+ Beauty does not test on animals nor do we ask others to test products or ingredients on animals on our behalf. H2O+ Beauty does not sell products into countries that require animal testing for cosmetic products.” Which was updated in March of 2017. Could I get more detailed info as to why they’re listed? This is my current skincare preference but I’m trying to go Cruelty-Free for 2018. Thanks!!

  • Alan says:

As everyone has the ability and option to improve themselves through choice and avoidance of negative influences, then it becomes a choice based on compassion for the animals used; a choice based on wanting humane and ethical treatment for helpless animals that do feel sensations and do suffer in pain. If one person can choose to not hurt an animal unnecessarily, then it is positive as a conscious choice for no animal testing to be done. There are better and different research testing methods that involve no animal testing and that would really help the cosmetics companies in the most ways to allow humane 21st Century advancement.

  • Chris says:

One point. I would hope that pet food manufacturers do test on animals. After all it will be animals that eat it.

Dog food should be tested using dogs
Cat food should be tested using cats

This of course after other non animal tests to establish that the food is appropriate in terms of nutrients etc.

  • Patrick says:

Thank you for compiling this list. I am making a YouTube video about Asonor/ZZ Snore and how they use retired greyhounds to test their stop snoring devices under anaesthesia. Terrible. I will use your list in my video to make other aware.

  • Jelena says:

    Hy!
I saw on your list that Clarins is listed as non cruelty free as skincare brand, but it’s not listed on makeup. Does it means they do not test makeup products on animals, just skincare?
Sorry if it’s a stupid question, but I want to start using only cruelty free makeup so I’m interested for this info.
    Thank you

  • Mel says:

Thanks for the list, it’s so helpful! Noticed L’occitaine are on there but they say ‘L’OCCITANE does not and has never tested its products, its active ingredients or its raw materials on animals at any point in the product development or manufacturing process’. Is it because they use products with Honey in? Might be worth removing from this list as although many vegans don’t consume honey, it’s not technically animal testing, rather using animal products. Just wanted to check that?

  • Stoni says:

A few days ago I was having a discussion with a couple of Nuskin distributers about the NuSkin animal testing statement they have on their website. Claiming they don’t test on animals, except when mandated by law and regulatory agencies, which in my option is very misleading. They sell to China, which in itself means they test on animals and I’m also led to believe some of the ingredients used in their products are also tested on animals. What was really sad, the distributors who where clearly brain-washed, claimed every product of Nuskin was natural, chemical free and not tested on animals. They more interested in their own vanity over animal welfare. They had no interest in understanding the truth and did not accept that Nuskin was listed on PETA’s website as a company who TEST on animals. In fact they claim PETA’s list is a lie!!!

  • Izzzz says:

    Hi Cruelty-Free Kitty,

Thanks for the article. I was wondering which of the brands you have listed actively test on animals. For example NARS didn’t used to sell to China and didn’t test on animals, therefore was cruelty free. So if it wasn’t for China and their laws, if NARS sold there it would still be cruelty free. I’m not excusing them, I just wanted to know if any of them test on animals in the US, not in China.

  • Flor says:

I am a bit confused. In their website, Kiehl’s say they are certified by PETA as cruelty free, and they have the leaping bunny. But they are still in this list of companies that test on animals. So what is really the case? Legally they can’t claim they are leaping bunny certified if that is not true.

    • Suzi Scheler says:

Are you sure you have the right brand? Kiehl’s is on PETA’s list of brands that DO test on animals, and they’re not Leaping Bunny certified.

  • Lisette says:

Fresh and Dr. Jart do not perform animal testing please update your website please go directly to their website and see for yourself

oh my god thank you I didnt know about any of these! Surprisingly someone who thinks we should test on animals rather than humans showed me this, but im happy he showed me because now I know what not to use!

  • Stephanie says:

Hello, I was wondering if Skinfood is cruelty free? I’ve checked their website and they say they are, but I haven’t found them in cruelty free brands lists so I’m not sure if they really are or not, or if they sell their products in China

  • Taylor says:

I don’t think you’re being entirely fair to some of the companies listed. For example, look at what you have for some of the cosmetic companies, who clearly shouldn’t be on the list (according to Snopes: https://www.snopes.com/critters/cruelty/avontesting.asp). For someone searching for helpful and accurate cruelty-free information, your list is what seems to be cruel. Now I don’t now how much of your website I can really trust, although I was initially quite excited.

    • Suzi Scheler says:

Hi Taylor. The website you linked to confirms that those companies still test on animals where required by law, hence why they’re not cruelty-free. This is the case for many companies on this list. If a company wants to sell cosmetics in China, they have to pay for animal testing being performed there, which means they’re not completely honest about “not testing on animals”.

  • Nicola says:

Devastated, some of these brands I love but now can no longer use 🙁 Thankful to have spotted this list and am now gonna look for cruelty free products ?

  • Jules says:

I don’t see Alterna Haircare on either good or bad list. It is also sold at Sephora. I really like their Bamboo line, and their website says they are eco friendly and cruelty free. However, I wonder if they make the exception for the Chinese market. I don’t know if they even sell there. Do you have any additional info?

  • Jill Jacobek says:

Consider Arbonne: 37 years of history being vegan and never tested on animals. PETA certified, sustainably sourced, green certified shipping. Ever evolving ingredient policy to European (Swiss) clean standards bars artificial flavors, sweeteners, colors, etc. Products for all demographics from baby care to anti aging, nutrition, sports support, cosmetics, spa products and essential oils. I’m posting my link here (if not okay please delete) because it makes me happy and relieved to not have to worry about this issue with the products I choose to use-takes the guesswork out- http://www.jilljacobek.arbonne.com

What about Perfectly Posh! They claim to be cruelty free.. I have joined this DS company because they state they are and also made in the USA any input would be great.

  • Mariella Dimopoulos says:

I notice you listed Kerastase as not cruelty free. They are under the Loreal brand and have not tested on animals since 1989.

  • Tsuki says:

Can you please let me know if Uriage is cruelty free? I can’t seem to find any information about it anywhere. I do not think they sell in China?

  • AC says:

Please review your list – there are some companies that are listed incorrectly. For example, Nivea does not test on animals (since 2013) … https://www.nivea.com.au/about-us/beiersdorf/Frequently-Asked-Questions/environmental-responsibility

  • Willow Cameron says:

    Hello!

I’m doing a university project on this matter as I’ve recently become aware of the lies and deceit behind pharmaceutical and cosmetic corporations regarding their animal testing standards/practices. Having found your site so helpful in the contribution to my research I was wondering if you would be able to help me out with sourcing some of this information. What are the important articles/ papers I should be aware of? I am from the UK and know our regulations differ from those in the US, but it is so insightful learning of these corrupt brands that can be found on every one of our supermarket shelves. Thanks for your hard work on this pressing matter, I really look forward to your reply.

    Kind regards

  • victoria alvarado says:

Wait, is Mitchum not cruelty free/vegan? I looked it up and asked around and ppl said that they were. Since theyre on this list in kinda confused now.

  • Rhi says:

HEY!!!! I was under the impression from previous research that Nivea products are not tested on animals unless sold in China where they are tested by a third party not niveas umbrella company – beiserdorfer-something ? Anyway would love to know what the deal is because I’ve been purchasing their products all the while thinking I was safe to do so. TIA❤️?

Eucerin is apparently cruelty free says on their website. http://www.eucerin.co.uk/our-research/research-background/testing-of-efficacy-safety-and-tolerability I’m guessing they’re owned by a company who is not? Shame.

  • Brittani says:

What do you know about the new fad brand Monat? I know someone who sells it and wants me to buy. When I mentioned I didn’t think it was cruelty free I,naturally, got a sassy earful about how cruelty free it was. I can’t find anything except their self proclaimed cruelty free status. Do you know anything additional?

    Thanks in advance!

  • Journey Monet says:

I have just created a petition in regards to animal testing. I am also totally against this because the animal did not do anything wrong. We need to put an end to this, and soon. I’m not going to live my life knowing that this is going on and not doing anything about it.

  • Priscilla says:

I’m surprises to zee Yves Rocher on the list, as they explicitly claim they don’t test on animals…!

  • Rachel says:

I think one of my biggest issues I’ve been running into is price. I don’t make a lot and I’m a vegetarian, however to find cruelty free products has been a real struggle. Does anyone have any cheap brands for beauty products/soaps and such? I’m not sure where to start.

  • Nu Suhaili says:

I recently tweeted about La Roche Posay and their status as non-cruelty free and they replied saying L’oreal doesn’t test on animals and send me this link http://www.loreal.com/sustainability/l'or%C3%A9al-answers/the-question-of-animal-testing
Kinda unsure what to make of this.

  • Paula Overly says:

Hi, a friend of mine is just starting a consulting business with Rodan + Fields and I’d love to support her by trying their products, however, I’m having a very hard time finding out if their ingredients are animal tested. They say the products are not and that their formulas are not animal tested but are not directly answering about the ingredients, which leads me to believe they may be altering the wording to lead people to believe they are safe. Does anyone here have any information? This is what they replied to my inquiry (and my friend who is joining their company) when we wrote to them separately:
“Rodan + Fields does not test its formulas on animals. We use alternate in-vitro methods, and voluntary compensated human subjects to verify the safety and efficacy of our formulations.”
That sounds to me like they are referring to the finished product and avoiding the question about the product ingredients.

  • David says:

Maybe a list of companies that DONT test on animals would be good to have. It might be shorter! Oh and how do pet food companies test on animals? Do they feed them pet food?

  • Virginia Tunstall says:

  • Nina says:

I’m looking for good eczema lotion that doesn’t test on animals and I stumbled upon Eucerin. They say they don’t test on animals..is this true? “Research without Animal Testing at Eucerin: Eucerin does not use animals to test cosmetic products. … Convinced that using animals to test cosmetic products in order to prove that they are safe and effective is not necessary, we have worked successfully for more than 20 years with in-vitro alternatives to animal testing.” https://int.eucerin.com/our-research/research-background/testing-of-efficacy-safety-and-tolerability

  • Mia says:

I really wish this would stop. If companies didn’t sell to China, maybe a lot of these companies wouldn’t show up on this list. Makes me sick to my stomach, they go to so many extremes all in the name of ‘science.’ It’s not science, it’s shameful. Animals and people are the same. We bleed, hurt, cry, reproduce, love and most importantly live. Nothing should be tested on living things, and especially not in the horrible ways they are. Do you have any good hair products (shampoo and conditioner) that are cruelty free in Canada?

  • Catarina Costa says:

Hi! I was wondering, I don’t see Violet Voss in neither lists (cruelty free and not). Anyone has info about the brand? Thanks x

  • Kacie says:

L’Oreal is one of the few companies to own brands that have kept their ethical stances and have remained cruelty-free under the ownership.
L oreal does not test on animals? They were on the list so I wasn’t buying them…

    • Aly Laughlin says:

L’Oreal does test on animals and is not a cruelty-free brand. They do own some brands that do not sell in China and are cruelty-free.

  • Libs says:

I’ve just been given this link on a facebook page for a product range called La Roche-Posay, I had asked if they were cruelty free, and they assured me with this that L’oreal DON’T test on animals… so now I’m confused, are they lying or has this page not been updated since they decided to stop, or are they not testing INGREDIENTS but testing the final product like the slippery little corporate weasels tend to do!?

    • Aly Laughlin says:

Unfortunately, this is a misleading claim. While they may not conduct animal testing themselves, their products are sold in mainland China, where animal testing is required for foreign cosmetics. Therefore they are not a cruelty-free brand.

  • Christie says:

I am VERY Thankful for the list by the way.

  • fran says:

had no idea febreze is on the list of bad products. also pantene. I always liked it. going to do my best not to buy products that are vegan but owned by companies that don’t practice cruelty free. like loreal and estee lauder.what a shame!!

  • Nicole says:

Hello! Could you explain what you know about the Garnier testing stance? I’ve been researching myself but it’s not exactly been very clear… I know they are no longer selling in China, and I’ve just been looking at L’Oreal’s animal testing statement and they’re pretty much saying they no longer test (although I don’t believe this). Help would be appreciated! 🙂

  • Nicole says:

I’ve been a fan of H2O+ Beauty for quite some time. I’ve always thought that it was an underrated brand that has always provided great results for me.

After I saw the brand on this list I went to the website and it states: H2O+ Beauty does not test on animals nor do we ask others to test products or ingredients on animals on our behalf. H2O+ Beauty does not sell products into countries that require animal testing for cosmetic products.

I would be interested to see if this is the case and if someone could follow up.

  • Mia says:

I am all for using cruelty free products and am actively trying to change the products I use, but come on lets be serious now who decided to put pet food on the list…
I can only imagine it went something like this in their heads
—- “HOW DARE THEY TEST PET FOOD PRODUCTS ON ANIMALS! THATS ABSOLUTELY DISGRACEFUL. those companies should be ashamed of themselves. Get humans to test the pet food and see how they like it….”

  • Sara Ann Exline says:

Unbelieveable! Who wold ever think brillo pads and dozens of other products, like tooth paste would be tested on animals? I don’t think the majority of people realize the extent of this problem. I sure did not. I will try harder now to find alternatives to these products. We need more cruelty free products.

  • Jo C says:

Just wondering about Jurlique? Their policy on Animal Testing (http://www.jurlique.com.au/blog/animal-testing-policy)states that they actually don’t – “We do not test our cosmetic and therapeutic products on animals as part of our product development process, or outsource this activity to any third parties, nor have we ever included animal testing in our product development process in the past”. Is this true or not? Have they worded it to exclude other areas of testing? Just curious.

They do say that it is law for products that are imported into China to be tested on animals and that this is done through 3rd party Chinese testers. Is this why they are on the “yes” list? In that case, any company who exports their products to China would be under the same obligation – which puts a bit of a different spin on it don’t you think? The company itself doesn’t test on animals, but in order to be able to export into China, the products are tested on animals before entering the market.

I’m keen to know if Jurlique really do test on animals in any part of the manufacturing of the product.

    • Aly Laughlin says:

Hi Jo! Unfortunately, any company which sells products in China cannot be considered cruelty-free because animal testing is required in China by law for foreign cosmetics.

Hi. According Eucerin (from their official website):

Research without Animal Testing at Eucerin:

Eucerin does not use animals to test cosmetic products. This has been our policy since long before the directives regulating animal testing in cosmetics went into effect in the European Union in 2004. Convinced that using animals to test cosmetic products in order to prove that they are safe and effective is not necessary, we have worked successfully for more than 20 years with in-vitro alternatives to animal testing. Being a subsidiary of Beiersdorf, one of the well-known leading and accepted research companies around the world, we are actively advocating for the worldwide acceptance of existing animal test-free alternative methods by respective authorities. Furthermore, we strive to fill the gaps where alternative methods are not yet available, supporting those scientific efforts both in terms of personnel and financially.

Please research this. This is not a black and white issue. For many US companies, the products made in the USA ARE cruelty free, but if they import from places like China, they must abide by government regulations. MANY of the companies listed in this ‘article’ have either cut back – or completely out – of importing from China and those that do have limited products so that what they import is NOT tested on animals. They have also introduced alternatives to animal testing in countries that still still require it and in many cases, the countries have listened and are using alternatives to animal testing. Check your facts before spreading stuff like this as a blanket statement. Not cool.

  • Soul destroying to see how much stuff is tested on animals. Awful. We have not right to do that. Thank you for your post. Very helpful

  • Raylee Cooper says:

Here’s a general guide to whether a product is tested on animals or not – if it’s made in China it IS tested on animals – it’s a legal requirement that products are tested on animals in China. This is not surprising considering they eat dogs and cats over there! So if it says made in China, it is definitely tested on animals and should be avoided. Don’t just check whether the company is cruelty free, check the country where it is made, and whether that country has laws that deem animal testing must legally be performed. And btw, thanks so much for this great list!!

    Not true.

    Hi guys,

Do we know what the status is with Laura Gellar?

Thanks for this wonderful site and for all the research you do. 🙂 also benefit have really pissed me off, their wording of their animal testing policy on the uk website is bloody clever and it says they don’t test on animals and that they don’t want to get the cruelty free stamp because it implies that none of the ingredients have ever been tested and no company can ever gaurentee that, when in reality, it’s because they sell in China. I brought stuff at the airport before knowing this and It’s really annoyed me. I’ve even recently emailed and gotten no response. Naughty people!

  • Kassandra Jean says:

Is Limelight by Alcone not cruelty free?

  • Since their products are being tested on animals in China and they choose to finance those tests, MAC can’t be considered a cruelty-free company. The same applies to any brand who chooses to sell in China (like Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Benefit, and more).

  • Monica says:

I recently bought some skin care products in Yves Rocher and the website specifically said “test in vitro”. Now the list has confused me… Maybe that means that they only test some products but not all of them?

  • jlynz says:

dr. brandt’s website says they do not test on animals. Do they sell to places who do animal testing? Also Dr. Jart claims they do not test on animals. Do they sell to places that do animal testing as well?

  • diana says:

Can you please do some research to find out if Iconic London is cruelty free? I’d very much appreciate it!

  • Aurelas says:

I think the only ones that surprise me (though many sadden me–Demeter fragrances for instance, because they make my favourite perfumes), are Murphy Oil Soap and Woolite. Those products have been around for ages! Why on earth would they need to keep testing them, let alone on animals? It just makes no sense at all. I didn’t see anything about two of the components I use in my homemade laundry detergent, Fels Naptha (sp?) and Zote. Would they be listed under another brand name?

  • Aurelas says:

I used to be an Avon rep too. I wish now I could undo that, and not just because of all the money I lost when they signed up too many reps for my tiny rural area and everyone had to compete to make a single sale. Not only was I selling products that were funding animal testing for Avon’s expansion into China, but the clothes, shoes, etc are made by women and children in sweatshops who are treated terribly and paid terribly. I love Avon bubble bath and (I know this sounds funny) their deodorant, but I’m just going to have to find alternatives.

  • lol

Here’s the proof, directly from Avon’s official site:

“But if a compromise cannot be reached, we must comply with the [animal] testing required by local law. “

  • Leia Hockaday says:

    Thank you for the list,

I’ve just been on Neutrogena website they’re owned by Johnson and Johnson and they say they don’t test on animals. I’m curious cos I’ve seen them on every site bad site but they say they don’t do it. Also Marc Jacobs says they don’t test on animals. Thank you for the list. 🙂

  • NiNi says:

I’m so angry right now because when I bought my oil skin at Kiehl’s. Before I purchase i asked a guy who’s seller said “yes. We are not tested animals”. I double asked “are u sure”. I didn’t know it’s should be show “not tested animals”. And now how wonder I figure out. Such as the lier.

  • Getting their animal testing policy is like pulling teeth. I tried contacting them several times and they won’t answer basic questions like required by law testing. I can’t say they test on animals though, but they won’t tell us much.

  • Egerli Adamson says:

Daaamn, I thought Oriflame was completely cruelty free. It seems that after a bit of research they sell to countries where it might be required. I’m su bummed and disappointed in them…

  • The fragrances are also tested. That’s the case most of the time (Marc Jacobs is really an exception!).

  • Phoenix Adventure says:

The brand “dermacol” says that their final products aren’t tested on animals. So idk if you would like to add them on to your list.

  • Tyria says:

Alberto V05 says on their bottles that they don’t test on animals, though?

  • MelissaM says:

The fact that labs are in different countries doesn’t change the fact that the company as a whole has still devices to operate in place where animal testing is required. They are choosing & paying for animal testing & this are not cruelty free in any way.

  • raquel chen says:

fresh’s website says they do not…

  • Emma Vivaldi says:

On the eucerin website it says they test in vitro. Are you sure they test on animals?

  • erika says:

Thank you for this. What an eye opener.

  • klc says:

It is so unnecessary and medieval to test products designed for humans on animals.
The pet food I do understand though, it is for the animals…. although there is so much shit in most animal food (much like human foods) few brands are truly good for them.

  • Great list, although according to L’Oreal’s official website they have finally ceased all animal testing. Now if only they would clean up their ingredients… I am an affiliate for Jurlique and I had no idea they test on animals. I have sent a query to them and if this is true I will no longer be a rep for them.

  • Ryan Moseley says:

i’m not sure about Alberto V05. I know they used to be owned by Unilever, which does test on animals, but the most recent bottle I’ve seen says it’s distributed by High Ridge Brands Co, made in the USA, and not tested on animals. Does anyone know anything about this? I can’t seem to find much info online about it.

  • Estefani JContreras says:

What about Elizabeth Arden and Clarins? They doesn’t appear here but either in the cruelty free list.

  • Kim says:

Wtf!! Testing chemicals on innocent and defenceless animals?? This is very sad

  • Carolyn H says:

That’s all marketing PR…same blurb from MAC and any other company selling in China. If you buy something that tests in China, the money that you spend goes to the company. The company then has to pay the animal testing agency in China to get approval for sale, so yes, if you buy something in the US, Canada, or where ever, your purchases contribute to the funding of that animal testing. And yes, there is something they can choose to do, not sell in China, like all of the real cruelty-free companies choose to do. Fine if you choose to buy it or sell it, but don’t make false cruelty-free claims.

The first hit when you google ‘Is GlamGlow sold in China?’ should be all the evidence you need? Here’s the relevant section:
‘“The most important launch in Asia has been China,” says Dellimore. “Glamglow launched in China with Sephora in 170 stores and within the first week became the number one selling skin care product in Sephora China in store and online. China represents a difficult and highly competitive market and we are excited to lead the skin care world in Sephora China.”’

Here’s the first hit when you google ‘Is GlamGlow sold in China’: http://www.cosmeticsbusiness.com/technical/article_page/Glamglow__Positively_glowing/91760

Key section: ‘“The most important launch in Asia has been China,” says Dellimore. “Glamglow launched in China with Sephora in 170 stores and within the first week became the number one selling skin care product in Sephora China in store and online. China represents a difficult and highly competitive market and we are excited to lead the skin care world in Sephora China.”’

  • Elisha says:

They have to test for eye, skin and respiratory irritants. Obviously I agree with you that they shouldn’t use animals to do this.

  • Elisha says:

If a brand sells their beauty, perfume or home care products in China, they are consenting to animal testing and cannot be considered cruelty free.

  • Kimberly Punter says:

Hi! so sad to see that so many brands still test on animals.. can I ask where you found that Origins tests on animals? I use their products and always believed they didn’t test on animals but on volunteers since that’s what they said on their website..

    They sell in China.

    So’s Physician’s Formula! It’s on PETA’s list.

  • Nikki Mills says:

Just because CHINA tests these products in CHINA does not mean that the PRODUCT COMPANIES test on animals.
If I bought a product and tested it on my cat before I used it, that doesn’t make the company a cruelty brand.
There is nothing the company can do once the products enter China.
If you’re buying your products from China, then you have a problem. If you’re buying them from Europe or USA, then they are CRUELTY FREE.
You can blame the brand for what CHINA does with it.

    • Elisha says:

Your analogy is faulty. Here’s one: Imagine you make cruelty-free soap, and somebody told you you could increase your profits 1000% by selling to China. You are totally aware that this would mean your products would be subject to animal testing, but you do it anyway because $$$. China’s the biggest market in the world, so who cares if a few bunnies have to die?

These companies all know the ethical cost of doing business in China, and choose to do it anyway, as per the above example. How can you defend that?

    • Carolyn H says:

Actually, you can blame the brand, because it is the brand who is paying an animal testing agency in China so their products can be approved for sale. Given that the Chinese market is probably just as big, if not bigger than that of Europe and North America combined, so it’s not like it’s a minute amount of products being tested, it’s more like half of all of the company’s products.

    • dangkids says:

WHAT?? You need to RE-READ WHAT you wrote yourself……..I hope you don’t think that China tears all these products down just to animal test???!!! HUH?
      NO. no, no, no….
If a company wants to do business in China, THEN YES, that company will abide by all of China’s rules or they don’t sell anything………..

  • SourCinamonBun says:

Nivea DOES NOT test on animals. Also L’Oreal and all of it’s affiliates (like Maybelline etc) NO LONGER test on animals anywhere in the world. http://www.loreal.com/sustainability/l'or%C3%A9al-answers/the-question-of-animal-testing

Please update this and make sure your research is THOROUGH before posting.

    • Unfortunately this is incorrect.

The full statement you’re quoting is: L’Oréal no longer tests on animals any of its products or any of its ingredients, anywhere in the world. Nor does L’Oréal delegate this task to others. An exception could only be made if regulatory authorities demanded it for safety or regulatory purposes.

L’Oreal still tests on animals where required by law, meaning they’re not cruelty-free.

    • BeCompassionate says:

“An exception could be made if regulatory authorities required it for safety or regulatory purposes.” This is right after their bolded statement in the link you provided.

While they seem to be working toward being truly cruelty-free, they still sell in China. And mainland China still requires, at this time, animal testing. :/ So technically, they’re not cruelty-free. Sorry, Cinnamon Bun.

Also, as a note, I’ve worked for manufacturers in the Health & Beauty industry. When a company includes vague statements like quoted above, you can bet your buns that they’re going to take advantage of the legal wiggle room those statements provide. If they didn’t, those statements wouldn’t even be there.
Unfortunately, non-animal in-vivo testing is way more expensive than traditional animal testing, and these cosmetic mega-companies just don’t care about anything except their profit margins. 🙁 The only way it will change is when the consumer demands higher standards regarding their testing procedures. Which is why it comes down to our thorough understanding of current laws, in the US and globally, and our choices regarding what we will tolerate when it comes to animal torture.

  • Nikhi Janae says:

It would be awesome if you labeled those which are sold in China with an asterisk or something as to why they are not cruelty-free. I’m only a transitioning vegan and while many here would still hate me for it, I’d still like to know which are “better” in that it’s China’s fault, not the company as a whole. (Yes I understand the company should still back out of China if they truly care, but it would just also be nice to know in general their stance.)

    • Elisha says:

It’s most definitely the companies’ ‘fault’, though. They all know the ethical cost of doing business in China, and choose to do it anyway because $$$. They can be considered no less cruelty-free than any other testing company – just less honest.

  • Greg Singh says:

I think every brand I use is in this list.

  • Thank you Marta for your kind words! Fortunately I’m used to those types of comments now. 🙂

I find that a lot of people really want to trust that their favorite brands are cruelty-free, and don’t want to hear otherwise. It’s a shame the fake cruelty-free policies are winning sometimes.

  • Katie says:

    Thankyou so much for this!!!

  • Amber says:

    Does proactive test on animals?

  • Suzanne Campbell-Foster says:

This is a very misleading post. I can not stand up for all of these companies… but I can stand up for the one I work for. Mary Kay – USA does not test on animals. Most of our plants in other countries do not test on animals either. However, our plants in China do – because it is REQUIRED there by their laws… not because we choose to. In fact I am most certain that quite a few of these companies listed here are for that very same reason.

    • sophie says:

its no excuse. they choose money and suffering of animals over sound moral stance and simply the humane choice

      • Get it straight. says:

And the humane choice is to not to try and change the rules and regulations for product testing in China? It’s no excuse to try and to right someone’s wrong doing? A country that requires many companies’ products if not all of their own products to be tested on animals? How does testing in one single country change their moral stance? So cruel they must be to want to make an actual effort in the world.

    • Elisha says:

This argument really baffles me – it’s not like these companies have been forced at gunpoint to sell in China? They do so because $$$, plain and simple. Profits before ethics. There are plenty of ethical brands that won’t touch China with a barge pole until its laws change, big profits be damned. THOSE are the brands I choose to support.

It is so frustrating to see some of the (actually almost ALL) of the top notch and my favorite brands such as YSL and Dior to be not cruelty-free.there are so many make up products that I love from these brands and now im discouraged because idk what to do if i have to switch out these products because there rlly isnt great dupes for it:((

  • Antorcha says:

can you update it, cause in peta’s website they said pantene is cruelty free http://www.peta.org/living/humane-home/buy/

  • Countess Palatine of Burgundy says:

Avon has never tested on animals, i use to sell it! They pride themselves on not using animals products or testing on them. Dior uses natural scents in his perfumes and dose not need to test as his brand and many other ‘older classic brands’ listed here are tried and tested and dont test either. You should be careful not to spread gossip. In fact thanks to true campaigners to ban cruelty to animals has pretty much already succeeded as there are very few who can use animals in the creation and testing as it is a world wide ban now! ( in the west) Stay away from asia made products and stick to time tested european brands

    • Elisha says:

Avon and Dior sell in China. Maybe don’t accuse the wonderful creator of this website of ‘gossip’ when you clearly haven’t done a minute of research yourself?

  • Naoimh Neeve Rogers says:

Benefit doesn’t actually test on animals, it just doesn’t claim to be cruelty free as it is possible a compound or something similar has been previously tested on animals by an external company. It says so in their FAQs on their website

  • Animal Loving Vegan says:

Avon does test on animals. Even when they said they were not. They lied and were caught. They were outsourcing testing for decades and were in multiple lawsuits over misleading consumers. They are a horrible company just like L’Oreal and Proctor & Gamble. http://www.peta.org/action/action-alerts/avon-mary-kay-estee-lauder-and-revlon-are-paying-for-tests-on-animals/ and http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2110787/Avon-withdraws-animal-test-claims-website-complaints.html Urban Decay is not cruelty free, they are owned by the barbaric company L’Oreal who kills millions of animals throughout all it’s subsidiaries. If you buy a product that was cruelty free and is now owned by a company that isn’t. Then you are putting dollars in the pockets of the murderers. That includes Urban Decay, who is owned by L’Oreal.

Brands of animal meals who test on animals? It has no sense omg..

  • angieb says:

AMAZING COSMETICS does not test on animals. Your information is incorrect for that brand.

  • Hope says:

I mean the laws in Europe ban testing cosmetics on animals, so my favourite French skincare brands Avène and Vichy can’t test on animals or outsource animals testing for products sold within Europe (I think that’s the law right now – correct me if I’m wrong)
But I assume they sell products in China which requires animal testing on cosmetics, which really sucks because in the end it’s up to them where they sell their products. China is the biggest emerging market in the world, and in the end producers will go where there are masses of new consumers. China really does need to change it’s stance on cosmetic animal testing (and it’s stance on a lot of things *cough* human rights abuses *cough* the death penalty *cough*)
Still I don’t know where I stand ethically by using these brands, the only brands I know will keep my skin clear and healthy and in a selfish way – allow myself to feel good – knowing that the products being sold to me have not been tested on animals in Europe, but may have been tested on animals in China. I guess I have a bit to think about now.

    • Sarah McLoughlin says:

Hi Hope. I understand your dilemma. For me, as soon as I learned about how animals were treated in these tests that was it I couldn’t use any of those products any more. If a company doesn’t test in Europe or America but then does just to sell in China I think that’s unethical and I won’t have any part of it. A few years ago I started using essential oils and it opened up a whole new world for me in terms of skin care. Its not just about the essential oils but using completely natural and cheap products you probably have at home anyway to care for your skin. The toxins in these branded products are what are damaging your skin. I recently started a blog about the changes I make if you want to have a look let me know x

It might take some time to find what works for you, but there are a LOT of truly cruelty free options, including ones that are great for very sensitive skin. I highly recommend checking out Paula’s Chouce. Their ingredients/ formulations are top notch, they use no fragrance or known irritants, & they have fab customer service w/ an easy return policy should anything not work out for you. They also offer consultations to help you figure out what will likely work best for your skin type/ issues of you ate overwhelmed by the choices available. I use a number of their products & at 37 my skin is the best it’s ever been. I truly cannot recommend them highly enough.

  • Melissa Willford says:

All product ingredients have to be tested before the FDA can approve it for human use, that’s just how it is and how it always has been. Even if the company is cruelty free, it just means they’re using ingredients that were tested by another company and proven safe by the FDA. So nothing is actually cruelty free.

We do not engage in animal testing, nor do we use animal-derived ingredients in any of our products. As leaders in the skincare science industry, we consider it our charge to continually innovate new and effective ways to test products without the use of animals, relying instead on advanced testing methodologies that are strictly cruelty-free. Hi Samm, I’ve been working for Bobbi Brown (Estee Lauder Companies) and I was informed they are cruelty free. • christine sanders says:

a lot of brands who state they do not test on animals is because they themsleves are not testing (ie; Benefit) and they are hiring 3rd parties to carry out their testing, or they hire someone to hire someone to do it so they can claim they are cruelty free when infact they are not because they care more about profit, its all a marketing scam!! And it sucks that even brands like Nars who are “cruelty free” are owned by monster’s like Shiseido because in the end they are still reaping benefits. DIY or small Indie brands are they way to go!

You can’t trust brand representatives because they usually dont know and you cant trust the packaging because its all cleverly worded to avoid technicalities, such as brands claiming to be all natural, for example Bare Minerals might have (some natural) options but they market themselves and claim a beautiful natural finish to make you believe its all natural.

Animal testing is awful but I also believe animal derived ingriendents are, although the animal would rather be dead then in those cages. Who wants a cruelty-free lipstick made of dead beetles and sheeps wool/oil? Who wants a cruelty-free anti aging moisturizer with snake venom? (kate sommerville) Who wants a cruelty-free face masks with snail-secretions?

What’s more misleading is that animal-derived ingredients are totally considered “natural”. So your natural cruelty-free brand is full of animal by-products and dead insects.

Vegan is the most ethical choice! Even if you can’t fully commit make the difference when you can!

Why would they say that they don’t and you say they do, have you checked your facts or randomly selected massive chain companies to boycott!?

We are happy to confirm that the L’Oréal group of companies, which includes Lancôme, Redken, Garnier, Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Biotherm, Kérastase, and Vichy, as well as L’Oréal, has carried out no animal testing since 1989 on the entire range of its products. This decision was undertaken within the framework of our fundamental objectives: to offer innovative products of high quality while ensuring their safety in use by our customers. For information about the significant efforts deployed by our laboratories over a period of 25 years to develop alternative methods to animal testing, as well as our very important achievements in this field, please consult our website at
    http://www.lorealusa.com.

    • Elisha says:

The link you’ve provided literally states that L’Oreal conducts animal testing: ‘An exception [to our no animal testing stance] could only be made if regulatory authorities demanded it for safety or regulatory purposes.’ It’s the classic deflection that ALL cruel companies make in order to appear CF when, in fact, they’re happy to expand their business to China (the biggest market in the world) because $$$. This is their statement in plain language: ‘Our products are animal-tested because we choose to sell in China, where animal testing is mandatory.’

  • Maria Franka says:

    What about Shiseido?!

  • Catherine T says:

Thank you for that post. Now I know which companies I ought to avoid

    cosmetologylover.blogspot.gr

  • Willow says:

They’re on a separate list which do not test on animals, but are owned by companies that do.

  • Willow says:

Is there any chance you could organize your cruelty-free list like this? Most of the brands on it I’ve never heard of and I have no idea what they sell. It’s hard to search through them all trying to find who sells something specific.

  • Laura Silva says:

Hello! I have a question: Lancome is mentioned as a brand that tests on animals on the make up section. However, in the fragrances section, Lancome is not mentioned. Does this mean that the perfumes sold by Lancome are cruelty free?

  • Amy says:

Eucalyptus oil is a holy grail cleaning product! Just a few capfuls in a spray bottle with water. I use it for all benchtops, bathroom and toilet, glass and mirrors!

  • Haley Lynn Coleman says:

Benefit does not test on animals

  • Hazel Taylor says:

I notice Nivea and Yves Rocher are both on this list – but both claim to be cruelty free!

  • Sladjan Trifunovic says:

I think that NIVEA do tests on animals only in China .

  • Lana says:

This list has a lot of false information because a lot of these companies do not test on animals for example its says on the Nivea website “The manufacturers of NIVEA products, Beiersdorf Germany, does not test on animals. Animal testing has been completely banned for all cosmetic products in the EU since 2004, and for all the ingredients of these products since 2013.”

    • Elisha says:

They sell in China, where animal testing for cosmetics is mandatory. Before accusing CFS of presenting false information, you should probably learn the definition of cruelty free.

  • Olivia Tresenberg says:

I was in touch with Aussie and they claim not to test on animals. They also referred me to the page of P&G: http://us.pg.com/sustainability/social_responsibility/policies_practices/animal_welfare_alternatives#
So I am not sure what to believe anymore. I asked them why it’s not on their website if they claim not to test on animals and the rep I was talking to said he didn’t know but that he will forward my email to the aprorpiate department.

  • C.J. Jayy says:

Would anyone mind sending me cleaning product brands that are available to Michigan, that are cruelty free? Thank you so much!

  • Alexis says:

Paula’s chOice! Plus there’s a $10 off code for new customers! Irritant free and cruelty free

    • Tamra Lynn Compton says:

Murad acne products are incredibly effective and work quickly. They are also tested on people, not animals.

  • To knowingly continue to use a product that you have found out to be tested on animals, is sheer evil.

  • Brooke Mckinney says:

It would make sense, however a lot of the testing done is very abusive.. including tests where the animals are made to eat the food, then have their stomachs cut open to see what the food does to them internally. pet food that is not animal tested uses ingredients that they already know are not harmful, therefor do not need testing.

  • Katie M says:

I think it boils down to where you are in the World and what your laws are. I try to stay is much cruelty free or leaping bunny free. But some products i’m sorry I will keep using, or until i find an alternative that is better or does the same. Trying to hurt ourselves to rather it is or isn’t is just to much time wasted, find it is better to each their own I try hard but sometime it’s not worth trying to find something different

  • Katie M says:

to go with this… Places like china and others all test on animals it’s what they do, why because they have different laws and standards. Also goes for food and other products coming from there or factories that are there and sending it here

  • Ιωάννα κούλ-σουν says:

Do you know if castalia, soap and glory, bourjois test on animals?

  • Kaylee Sanders says:

Don’t bash on a company you know nothing about.

  • Kerry Ross says:

I’m confused about kerastase they are on the list but this is a loreal product and on the writing you have put the following
L’Oreal is one of the few companies to own brands that have kept their ethical stances and have remained cruelty-free under the ownership.
    Bit confused sorry !

  • Olka says:

Also urban decay company has been dissolved and that means that it’s all loreal now. Original source belongs to pz cussons and it’s not a separate company

  • Olka says:

    Bourjois sells in China too

  • Adriana Boltryk says:

“L’Oreal is one of the few companies to own brands that have kept their ethical stances and have remained cruelty-free under the ownership”

Kiehls is a part of Loreal and its not testing on animals

    • Mapiah says:

Hate to say it but Kiehls tests on animals. Their products are sold in China and therefore are tested on animals. I’ve recently switched to only cruelty free make up and skincare. I really wanted to get Kiehls but they’re not cruelty free at all. So far for my skincare, I’m looking at Lush, Dermalogica, Drunk Elephant, Kora Organics, Muddy Body & Josie Maran.

      • Alexis says:

Take a peak at Paula’s choice, it’s cruelty free and free of irritants if you have sensitive skin. Plus you can get ten dollars off first purchase with a referral code. I’m obsessed ?

  • Alexx Pettinaro says:

This list is mostly false! Do your research.

  • gisxp says:

L’Oreal also stopped testing on animals. They will not test on animals in any products anymore. The only time they would ever test on animals again is if it is mandatory and they have no other choice, besides that L’Oreal is now cruelty free.

    • Elisha says:

‘The only time they would ever test on animals again is if it is mandatory and they have no other choice’

Er, it’s absolutely their CHOICE to sell in a country that requires animal testing. Companies that place profits before ethics don’t get my support, especially not when there are so many fantastic alternatives.

  • gisxp says:

Giorgio Armani does not test on animals. It says it on their website

  • anahi says:

The funny thing is that all the products you use are linked to an insane amount of diseases including cancer, so while you’re not caring fr this animals neither are the companies for you and your loved ones! have a good short non healthy life 🙂

    • Brooke Mckinney says:

Most animal testing does not accurate show how it will affect a human. There have been many diseases cured in animals being tested that have not been able to cure humans. Also, Many companies that DO NOT test on animals, use more natural ingredients than those that do, making them healthier. You really think that all those chemicals the companies use that do test on animals is healthy?

    • Brooke Mckinney says:

also, it is extremely easy to find companies that do not test on animals. there are so many lists.

    • Miss V. says:

Very true. Companies that don’t care about the health and welfare of animals usually don’t care much about the health and welfare of humans, either. They only care about the bottom line, filling our homes and environment and bodies with toxic ingredients that are slowly killing us just to earn another dollar. As long as the people who run those companies are getting rich, what do we (or the animals, or the earth) matter? 🙁

  • Racquel Braaten says:

Mary Kay does not test on animals, just fyi.

  • I live in the UK I’m not sure what sanitary products I can use now…?!

    • Willow says:

Try Ruby Cup, they can be used for 10 years! Drastically decreases waste created by tampons and pads. They’re a EU company and for every cup purchased they donate one to a school girl in Africa.

  • We need to remember that some brands are cruelty free even though their parent brands aren’t for example NYX is cruelty free but L’Oreal isn’t!

  • Olka says:

How about pz cussons? Parent of original source and imperial lether? I’m sure they year?

  • Kamryn says:

Most of these companies do not test on animals!

  • Sharron says:

Basically, if a cosmetics company states that they don’t test on animals, then I wouldn’t like to think they do as it has been illegal to test cosmetic products on animals anywhere in the EU since 2013! If the same company sells their stock in mainland China however, then they are not a cruelty free company as by law their products must be tested before being sold there so they are still enabling this unnecessary cruelty to take place, they all should really say ‘unless required by law’ in their policy and then we will know that means ‘we sell our products in China so we do test on animals’ but sadly they don’t as I have found out from research!

So lots of research of beauty products for us all then until China change their law but websites like this make it soo much easier! : .))

p.s. soo hard to find a nice perfume which is not sold in China as all the main brands do, anybody any ideas?

    • Elisha says:

Perfume is the sticking point for me, too! Sadly, I haven’t unearthed a single ‘designer’ brand that doesn’t sell in China or belong to a testing parent company (also important to me personally). I’m currently using Pacifica but would love to try one of the bespoke brands like Le Labo or Sweet Anthem 🙂

  • NoHoesRick says:

Old spice is in there. I’m kinda disappointed. But I’ll still use it, cause it’s the only deodorant that doesn’t mess with my body
    #SNS

    • TSSquirrel says:

Try Island Organic deodorant. It can be found on Amazon. My husband used to use Old Spice deodorant as well, said it was the only thing that worked for him. He happily uses the Island Organic now. I also use it and it is the only deodorant that has ever worked for me. After a few weeks of use, your body will detox from years of commercial deodorant/antiperspirant use and your natural smell should improve. I’m not ashamed to say that I am a woman that had very stinky pits and for years went from deodorant brand to brand trying to find one that would work, with no long term success. After switching to Island Organic, I can actually skip a day of deodorant and not kill anyone at the end of the day. Try it 🙂

  • Isa says:

Hi there so I purchased for the first time ceramidine by Dr jart and it has the cruelty free bunny on the packaging. But it’s on the the not cruelty free list? Is it cruelty free or not? Thank you ?

  • Jean says:

No excuse? So thousands of people should sit without jobs, just because one department is forced to work on animals? It’s not the companies fault and it’s not just for profits… it’s about job creation, but i doubt someone like you would understand.

    • Sandi says:

What a pathetic response. Other types of employment can be found-it is done frequently in today’s workforce. You obviously know nothing about animal testing or available alternatives or perhaps you are too self absorbed and entitled to care about something other than yourself. It is 100% a companies discretion as to whether to test their products or source raw ingredients from suppliers who test. There are other alternatives but it is more attractive to a CEO to add another million or two to his compensation package than to save the life of a beagle or rabbit.

  • S Herman says:

“Others, completely independent of L’Oréal and outside the direction or control of L’Oréal, might do animal testing pursuant to their local requirements.” the issue with this statement is that they know full well when they are entering a market that requires this testing by law. No one forced them to sell in China, it’s not a legal requirement to sell in China, so it is 100% their own choice to have thier products tested on animals.

  • Floppy Ro says:

Hi! Thank you very much for this post, i found it really helpful. However, I wanted to ask you why the brand Rimmel London is on the list, since the company claims to be cruelty-free (link: http://us.rimmellondon.com/coty-page/animal-testing ). If they’re lying, I’ll certainly stop buying their products!

  • Stephanie Schonberger says:

GlamGlow is cruelty free! Also, the majority of their products are vegan-friendly with the exception of ThirstyMud as it uses Orange Blossom Honey (which is obviously harvested from bees). I’d like to see GlamGlow moved to the cruelty free list.

  • Hi Megan, here’s the post: https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/news/loreal-animal-testing-not-cruelty-free/

Please give it a quick read and you’ll see what their true animal testing policy is.

  • Animal Loving Vegan says:

By the way, SUNLIGHT IS NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS. They are owned by Huish which is Sun Products. Since the beginning they have never tested any of their products on animals. This message is directly from the company, “Sun Products is committed to health, safety and the protection of the environment. As such, we don’t test our products on animals, nor do we ask others to test our products on animals.” This company owns the following brands, Wisk, Sunlight, Surf, ALL and Snuggle. The products are awesome and the only ones I use. Don’t forget to check out those Snuggle scent boosters !

  • Charlie brown says:

Nivea does NOT test on animals they’re good

  • Megan says:

Thank you for your website it is awesome, I have one question for you… could you tell me some product that I can use around my house that are cruelty free to make my house smell good because obviously Air Wick and Glade are not cruelty free so if you can just give me some companies that i could find at Walmart or meijers that would be awesome!

  • karen says:

Does Votre Vu test on aminals?

  • Raven says:

How are PET FOODS not supposed to be tested on animals???
They are given to animals, of course we must test it on animals!!

    • Animal Loving Vegan says:

Iams literally cuts their animals open, cuts chunks of out their bodies and leaves them laying on the floor suffering. Get the facts http://www.uncaged.co.uk/iams01.htm They are owned by proctor and gamble who kill millions of animals every year testing on their garbage products. They are just as evil as L’Oreal, Unilever, SC Johnson, Revlon, Avon, Mary Kay, the list goes on. You cannot call yourself an animal lover and continue purchasing products knowing that animals are brutally tested on them for no reason. You cannot call yourself an animal lover and eat them. That is a fact. Saying you will not stop using a product that you have for years, says a lot about your character. You are the reason these companies that test on animals stay in business. There are so many that sell in China that say they don’t test on animals and it is a lie. Such as Urban Decay, Benefit cosmetics, etc. They test on animals. Soon as I learned I tossed the products in the garbage. They should all be shut down. They are horrible. The things they do to animals is worse than any nightmare you could ever dream up. No product for any reason is worth the death of an animal. The truth is the truth no matter how you want to see it.

  • Lily says:

Amazing blog!!!! I was wondering how you created it 🙂 And I really need to thank you because it is hard to find good information on these things!!! I am doing a group project and we are making a product to stop animal testing. Thanks again!!!!

  • Girl123456789 says:

Please share you’re sources as I’ve done many essays and research on multiply of these brands, most of all ARTISTRY , they signed the PETA in 1989 and unless government regulated (yes sometimes the government forces it) they will not test on animals ! I’m ashamed too see someone put down so many names of brands that have signed and followed regulations. Please before you write things do you’re proper research!

    • Hey Girl 🙂 I consider companies that test on animals in China not to be cruelty-free. My main source is in fact PETA, like I mentioned at the top of the post!

      • Annette Hodge says:

I wouldn’t trust PETA with anything. They will do whatever it takes, including lieing, to support their facts. And all of those animals they have put to death. PETA should be at the top of NOT cruelty free!

        • Elisha says:

You can easily do your own research. Most companies that choose to sell in China (ie agree to animal testing) will have a ‘where required by law’ statement in their website FAQs.

  • Danielld says:

Clorox does not test on almost all their products. Almay has not tested for over 2p years. Benefits cosmetic do not test on animals. Arm and hammer laundry soap is not tested on animals.

  • Lora says:

Also I don’t understand why we are still testing on animals anywhere in the world when the prison systems are full to bursting with live test specimens.

  • Lora says:

Avon was founded as a way to AVOID buying products tested on animals. So for them to all of a sudden be testing on animals is a ridiculous claim. They have it as part of their mission statement “will never test on animals.” So I call B.S. on some of these products.

  • Sarah says:

wait but on the Gorgio Armani website it says that they don’t test on animals..?

  • Ellie says:

Hi love your blog so much!
I thought Marc Jacobs has been peta certified cruelty free?

  • Hey Kristiina! I just reached out to them. I’ve been wondering about Balmain Hair too!

  • Cherie, ALL the companies in this list test on animals in some way or another. Please read the fine print and you’ll see that companies like Almay, Revlon, or L’Oreal still test on animals where required by law.

For anyone interested, please refer to this post about L’Oreal:

    https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/news/loreal-animal-testing-not-cruelty-free/

  • Confused. Just looked at Rimmel london and they say they do not test on animals.

  • Morgan Paige Bentley says:

Mary Kay only tests on animals in China because it is required by Law. Mary Kay in the United States does not!

  • Hi Rachel! Many companies word their animal testing policy in deceiving terms. An example would be stating that they’re “against animal testing” or that they “don’t ask others to test on their behalf”. Another common issue is companies stating that they don’t test on animals “except where required by law”, which means they’re not truly cruelty-free.

    • Lora says:

Then this should say worldwide list. You could have 2 separate lists. One for worldwide and one for American.

      • Carolyn H says:

These are all global companies, and the profits from US sales are not in a separate bubble. If you buy something in the US, other parts of North America like Canada or Mexico, Europe, etc., the profits all go to the one company. So if they sell in China, the profits from something you bought are used by them to pay for the animal testing that allows them to sell in China.

  • Woodensignsofautumn Farrell says:

HI, I wrote you earlier about Marc Jacobs and coty. They promised they didn’t test on animals, but they lied. They were very deceiving . They may not test in animals here in the states , but they sell to China and they do the testing. I will contacting them and telling how disappointing they are and how sneaky they were to a once loyal customer. It makes me sick to know how these companies will lie and twist words to sell a product. Thanks again for all your hard work.

  • Woodensignsofautumn Farrell says:

Hi, I contacted Coty and Marc Jacobs and they both told me they DO NOT TEST on animals . Coty actually sent me a copy if a legal documents with their entire policy on no animal testing . Please tell me why you have them on the test list? Is there something I’m not asking the two companies the right way? I don’t want to buy from them if they actually test on animals. I can send you the copy of their policy they emailed me if it would help. Thank you for all your hard work!

  • Angie Bucu says:

I see Miessence is missing from this list (http://www.miessence.com/organiccarehk/en/). Miessence are not only free form animal testing they are also certified organic to food grade standards. They offer a beautful range of skin, paersonal, hai and home care as well as superfoods.

  • Carole says:

I’m confused. Last year Joico was cruelty free. What did change so now they aren’t anymore cruelty free? Thank you

  • Filomela says:

Although I agree with your general point and think animal testing is cruel and mostly unnecessary, I am a little confused about the pet food. How else would you test pet food? Human food is tested on humans too… Please explain.

    • The issue is the method in which the pet food is “tested”. Animal testing here refers to using lab animals, which are treated extremely poorly. Although lab conditions today are better than they used to be, there are alternatives to using lab animals. The alternative is using “real” pets that go on with their day-to-day lives as opposed to caged lab animals. I hope this explains it a bit better! I did write a lengthly post on the topic. 🙂

  • For anyone who’s curious about L’Oreal’s true animal testing policy, please refer to this post: https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/news/loreal-animal-testing-not-cruelty-free/

  • Nada Biers says:

https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/cruelty-free-101/shop-cruelty-free/ in this page you said sephora is cruelty free and in here it’s not?

  • amme says:

I never knew this !!! I will now never buy products from these stupid brands ! Wait until the law breaks your brand dumbos!

  • Hi Maria! Oriflame is not cruelty-free, no. They’re sold in mainland China which mandates animal testing.

  • Margaret Kennedy says:

That is a heck of a lot of animals!!!!! In this century it should be outlawed!!

  • Anonymoose says:

L’oreal does not s till test on animals….

  • Brianna Mae says:

PETA just reported that Marc Jacobs has officially gone cruelty free! I am so excited because his lipglosses are amazing!

  • KJ says:

You do know that even if the company did not test on animals, at least one (and in most cases almost all) were tested on animals. They wouldn’t be allowed to be sold if they weren’t.

  • Norman sigui says:

So are Chanel fragrances not tested on animals?

  • Joxaren says:

Glamglow is claiming to be cruelty free on their site and have mostly vegan products with exeption of thirstymud. So I’m wondering why they are on the list?
    Are they lying?
Selling in mainland of china? (which now days have lifted the law of animal testing,YEY progress!!)
Or is there something else I’m missing?

Note that Hongkong have different rules than the mainland of China.

      • Joxaren says:

But to mainland China or Hongkong? Are they still testing now when the law have altered?

As you are aware of Lush is selling in Hongkong but are still 100% crueltyfree.

How can I ask a company as a private person to prove if that are truly crueltyfree or not? Just a follow upp question so i can check some local brands 🙂

        • The law was only altered for local companies selling SOME types of cosmetics, so the law is still 100% unchanged for foreign companies like Glamglow. And they do sell in mainland China unfortunately, not just in Hong Kong where that law doesn’t apply. 🙁

  • Adam says:

Hey! I was just wondering shouldn’t Fairy Liquid be on this list? They’re owned by Procter and Gamble so they should be on this bad list ?

  • slm1100 says:

Hi, I’ve been researching essential oil companies and finding it very difficult to get straight answers. Have you heard if Young Living or DoTERRA are cruelty free? Thx!

  • Lara says:

For whatever reason, the whole link didn’t post. L’Oreal and subsidiaries discontinued animal testing.

    http://www.loreal.com/csr-commitments/l’oréal-answers/the-question-of-animal-testing

  • Heidi says:

Blue Buffalo is a high end dog food isn’t it? Can you explain how they use animal testing?

  • C M Concepcion says:

I only saw one of the products on here I use which is not cruelty free. Unfortunately, I don’t think an alternative exists. Sorry, the Mizani line of products has been the only line that works on my hair. If anyone can provide me with a cruelty-free alternative, I’ll be grateful.

  • Antonia Selvey says:

So disappointed in myself that I own too many of these brands. I will begin to swap over to cruelty free items as soon as I can!

  • Beth Wilson says:

Apparently L’Occitane stated that they didn’t test on animals was this list made before they said this or are they lying when they said they didn’t test on them 🙂

  • Mia says:

It’s written on Dr. Jart+ website that they don’t test on animals??
    http://us.drjart.com/products/22

  • Shelby says:

Shit! Literally every makeup brand (besides elf), face wash, hair care, and cleaning product I use was on here! I recently decided to try and use less non-cruelty free products but now it looks like I have to find new brands for everything! I’m kind of overwhelmed.

  • Lisa says:

I think it’s disgusting that in this day and age that there are that many companies out there still testing on animals – quite frankly I’m shocked, I have now made the switch and I have just ordered my full makeup from BarryM, can you plesae advise of a cruelty free toothpaste and moisturiser? I will be going through all my lotions and potions in the next few weeks and disguarding anything that so much as hints at pain and suffering.

  • Gabriela says:

Hello! I didn’t see Tom’s of Maine on your list and they are actually owned by Colgate who test on animals. I don’t know if you were informed of this, I wasn’t until literally half an hour ago and I am completely devastated.

    • Suzi says:

Hi Gabriela, thanks for your comment!

Although Tom’s is now owned by a company that tests on animals, the brand itself remained cruelty-free after the change. If you don’t support any brand owned by a company that tests on animals, I realize this doesn’t soften the blow unfortunately. But if it’s of any comfort, Tom’s of Maine is still certified by the Leaping Bunny. I hope you find another brand you love that’s 100% cruelty-free (I can recommend Desert Essence, Alba Botanica, or Jason). Best of luck!

  • Diamond Mercades says:

Thanks so much really. Your research helped me out a lot. I transitioned to vegan 2 months ago. But it has been a challenge because I am a cosmetologist and a makeup artist so your list of makeup and all of your products that are cruelty free and 100% vegan its just amazing so thank you so much! I didn’t want to just eat plant-based I wanted to totally change my entire life to vegan and hopefully others that I come in contact with so thank you

  • Shay says:

How, exactly, do some of these companies test on animals? Such as the animal food products: how is the testing cruel? And Pampers and Puffs–diapers and tissue paper? How are those tested in a cruel way?

I am all for switching. I’m just honestly curious because I don’t understand how tissue papers can be tested in a cruel way…???

    • Charlotte Fowler says:

most likely its the chemicals in them. For example, disposable nappies have absorbent chemicals and that is what is tested. Some tissues have essential oils etc and those will be tested. So what we get is harmless but they most likely tested other things that were chucked because they harmed the animal they tested on. Also animals used for animal testing are often kept in very bad conditions so its cruel all round.

  • susan says:

there are prisons overflowing with murders, rapists & pedophiles… Test on them, not innocent animals. Wouldn’t the testing be more accurate on a human? Test on the death row inmates!

  • Mady Powell says:

Is anyone aware if Micheal Kors nail polish is vegan and cruelty free?

  • Mickey says:

What are your sources? Several assumed brands that actually are cruelty free.

    • Suzi says:

Mickey, you must be thinking of brands that don’t test on animals unless required by law, which I don’t consider to be cruelty-free. Feel free to clarify and I’ll look into it.

  • thelizzyukz says:

This is really helpful. I’m planning to go cruelty free over the next year and this is really going to help to work out which companies to avoid. Unfortunately I can’t go cruelty free right now as I don’t have much money at the moment to get rid of all the products but once I used them up I’ll look for a cruelty free brand to replace them.

  • Suzi says:

It didn’t decrease! I just need to add the other brands that unfortunately test on animals to this list as well. 🙁

  • Fred says:

NOT COLGATE! There is at least one error on this list. As a long-term employee who is very familiar with the processes and procedures at the Colgate Palmolive Science and Technology Center, I am absolutely certain and can assure everyone that Colgate does not use animals for product testing.

  • Maureen St. Pierre says:

I thought I was doing quite good until I scrolled down to Vaseline, then Dove soap. Really? I still use them and then, because I am home sick with a cold I looked up Vicks. VICKS – I have been rubbing myself with Vicks all this week. I cannot do that any more. What alternative is there for that. Also so many soaps. For some things there does not seem to be an alternative but I am definitely going to stop using what I have mentioned. Anybody tell me an alternative to Vicks?

    • Dani says:

      For anyone reading this at a later date and wondering the same, here are some essential oils that can help. Use either;
      >Lemon or Peppermint (for cough and congestion)
      >Frankincense (for clearing nasal passages and lungs)
      >Lavender (for sinus congestion)
      >Eucalyptus (nasal congestions and upper respiratory infections)

MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BOTTLE! Mix a few drops of oil in large glass bowl of hot water and drape a towel over your head to catch the steam. Keep face far enough away that the steam doesn’t burn your skin and breathe in through the nose for approx 10 mins (or longer if needed)

  • Nancy Merritt says:

Or, Mark, we could test on you. I would feel bad…. especially when you writhed in pain, vomited your guts out, or had your vocal cords cut so they couldn’t hear your cries. Now, I’m really not serious, but your reasoning is lazy and selfish. Evil triumphs when good men do nothing, The question is, are you a good man? Do some research and find out what is done to these animals!

  • Giuseppe Gagliardi says:

Hi, I ma having serious problems with cruelty free brands, I use a retinol cream for face and one for eyes but tried Oz and Paula’s choice and my skin breaks down (today is like I have been bitten my mosquitoes)…any idea of where to start? I am a guy, cruelty free cosmetics has been the hardest thing since I turned vegan a year ago…thank you girls

    • Tamra Lynn Compton says:

Hi. You should truly look into Murad products. They are clinical, effective, affordable and tested on people, not animals.

      • Jo Anna says:

But they are full of nasty chemicals! Use cruelty free, organic products….much healthier!

        • Kristie says:

Organic is also out of a lot of people’s price range because, while finding cruelty free brands can be affordable, organic is not so much. Organic is great and all, but don’t shame people who don’t go organic when it may not be in their price range.

          • Diane Smith says:

Good to do some research on prices. Prices have dropped on many cruelty-free products. Dr Bonner’s seems expensive but it is diluted by water when you use it. It goes a long way!

        • Rachel Fitzgerald says:

Hi, chemicals can seep through the skin and then get into the blood stream, be careful with what you use when washing your hair – as nasties can get into the scalp and go into your brain! No nasty chemicals – all good. I still don’t trust a lot of these companies at any rate, always need professionals in order to go through the policies which the ordinary person just cannot understand. Sick and tired of this sort of thing, can read, but not any long, arduous policies, if you know what I mean! Happy organic (Organic Certified) and cruelty free hunting! No animal abuse, no excuses.

          • Mellon says:

Go into the brain, hey? I guess you’ve never heard of something called the skull? Or the blood brain barrier? Seriously, stop spreading misinformation. You’re only making yourself look silly.

    • Ronny says:

      Try Natural coconut oil

    • Lynette says:

Try Radha Beauty Rosehip seed oil. It’s a natural Retinol and great moisturizer

  • E Ferrie says:

how does blue buffalo test on animals? that’s sick.

  • Suzi says:

    Shea Moisture is cruelty-free, yes!

  • i like bath and body works says:

Why would they test pet food products on animals? I’m not a vegan nor a vegetarian but it’s a little sad and interesting to discover the products that do test on animals. They probably start their pet food business because they love pets and they feel that connection that I do. Oh and they decide to test animals like they don’t care. It’s also astonishing because Blue Buffalo always advertises that their dog didn’t like the chick-peas in their food, so they switched to Blue for real meat. Yes, dogs would prefer real meat then chick-peas, but we would all rather at least you have food then potentially kill animals. Even as a non vegan, it confuses me. It doesn’t go into a puzzle.

  • hannah says:

also,, burberry are not cruelty free, makeup brand, i didnt see it on the makeup, so maybe you should add that

  • Traxy says:

Yves Rocher do not test on animals. From their website:

“The brand Yves Rocher was committed early in the fight against animal testing. In 1989, the brand decided to be a pioneer in the cosmetic industry to stop animal testing for finished products, and replace them with alternative methods. Keeping this commitment:

    – We do not test on animals, nor our finished products or their ingredients
    – We support research programs on alternative methods to animal testing
    – We do not use raw materials of animal origin, except honey and beeswax

The fight against animal suffering is and will remain a strong commitment in the Yves Rocher brand.”

  • Kaila Neeley Williams says:

Can someone please advise why Benefit is on this list? And on the PETA list? I looked them up because I really love their products and this is what it said. “Benefit does not test our products on animals.

Since 1989, the Perfumes & Cosmetics companies of LVMH group (including Benefit Cosmetics) have not performed any tests on animals for our products – this was implemented long before the 2013 official ban set by the European Union.

We are deeply committed to the elimination of animal testing. We’re playing a leading role in developing alternative methods through our support of the “Fund for Alternatives to Animal Testing” in the United States. We also actively participate in validation studies of new alternative tests in the framework of the European cosmetics association, Cosmetics Europe. We are one of only a few companies to have invested in creating our own internal department to test raw materials and ingredients to further ensure the quality of our products and the satisfaction of our customers, which is our top priority.

We are hopeful that alternative testing methods will be adopted worldwide and we will see an end to animal testing.”

  • Marta says:

Hey Suzi! Your website is great. I wanted to learn about cruelty-free and cruelty-free shopping and you’re helping me a lot. I wanted to ask about brands like Essence, Makeup Revolution and Catrice Cosmetics. Are they cruelty-free?
    Thanks 🙂

  • Suzi says:

Regarding “how can you not test food on animals”, the tests are SOMETIMES done in extremely inhumane conditions where the dogs are kept in small cages, poor conditions, and die as a result.

There’s no real need to test pet food on animals though, as there are alternative methods. Some pet food companies don’t use animal testing at all.

    • Laura Carter says:

That is good information thank you. Sadly I’m not surprised about the dogs. :(. I will give my friend your reply. Have a great Sunday!

  • Alexandra says:

Shouldn’t Purina be added to the “DOES test on animals”/brands-to-avoid list? They’re owned by Proctor & Gamble which performs animal testing.

  • Makenna says:

Sooo helpful!!! Thanks for posting…at first I was just looking for makeup products but it is never bad to have too much information!

  • Dupont says:

Eucerin and Nivea belong to Beiersdorf they pretend they don’t test on animals, where is he truth ?

  • Jess Barber says:

If you “feel bad” why wouldn’t you change? You clearly don’t feel bad.

  • Suzi says:

Hey Christina, you’ve read my mind! I’m working on a list of green brands as well as a generic/store brand post. I’m hoping to get both of these published this month. 🙂

  • Anne says:

Thanks for this list! Keep sharing and exposing their unethical and immoral businesses!

  • Gordon Walker says:

I will routinely check this list before buying products, thanks for providing it.

  • Diana B says:

Great list! However, I do have a question about OPI. I read that they used to test on animals a long time ago but then stopped several years ago. I also heard that they were bought by a company that DOES test on animals- but they still do NOT test their products on animals. It is the same situation with Body Shop products; the company that owns them tests on animals, but the Body Shop does not. I have switched from OPI and Loreal nail polish to Sally Hansen, and Gosh because they do not test on animals, and because I want to be 100% that any brand I use, is cruelty free. <3

    • Suzi says:

OPI is unfortunately sold in China to the best of my knowledge. This is why they’re not cruelty-free in my book. 🙁

  • Suzi says:

They both still test on animals, unfortunately. Some companies will use loopholes and deceptive phrasing.

    • Dan Famechon says:

I’m in the middle of a shitfight ATM, bc I know they do & I’m sure my boss is torn but I can’t ignore it & my boss is making it sound like I’ve stores the hornets nest(I prob have!! These big companies don’t like people like me!!) I guess all I can do is stick to my guns & maybe we will lose the contract with them , but people are too conscientious these days & they will find out.

  • Madeline Lane says:

Oh really? Pet food companies test on animals?? No shit Sherlock.

    • Mellon says:

Madeline…Instead of being an ignorant twat-waffle, maybe use your brain. It’s not a matter of feeding animals the food and calling it a day. Feeding trials are done in laboratories, where animals are kept unhealthy and confined in small cages. Also, said animals are brutalized for no reason. That is NOT cruelty-free, by any stretch of the imagination.

    • Sarah Taylor says:

Madeline. Your a bit of a dick.

  • Buni says:

Thank you so much for this list! So disappointed in many of these brands that I thought were cruelty-free… (especially TRESemme). May I ask where you got the information that Dr. Jart tests on animals? On their site it says that they do not.

  • Patricia O'donnell says:

In this day and age never imagined so many still did this. Can’t computers do this now?

  • Elly says:

I always feed my cats Iams. Not any more.

  • Martina says:

Nivea does NOT tests on animals simply because its cosmetic is made in Germany where as many of you might know animal testing is banned by the law

    • Teresa says:

      On their website, Nivea states:

“Beiersdorf, the organisation behind the NIVEA brand, does not test on animals. As a global company, all our affiliates including Australia and New Zealand, are aligned on this stance. We believe animal testing is not required to prove the safety and effectiveness of our products.

In China, however, animal testing is mandated by law for the official registration and certification of the safety of certain product categories. In this case, the tests are conducted by local institutions authorised by the state not by the companies selling the product. Our goal is to convince these authorities that animal testing for cosmetic products is unnecessary and to advocate for the international acceptance of alternative testing methods.”

So because they supply the mainland Chinese market, they can’t be considered cruelty free!

  • Graeme Smith says:

L’Oreal are owned by Unilever, animal testers, wouldn’t touch them….pretty sure they make Stella McCartney’s fragrance as well, another celebrity hypocrite….

  • steph says:

but the EU banned animal testing in any products and even ingredients coming into the EU… technicall french make up should be free of this. are you sure its updated?

    • Suzi says:

I get where you’re coming from, but the ban only applies to cosmetics. A lot of these French companies work with pharmaceutical companies that still test on animals.

  • Debra Robinson says:

Majority of these, I would never use. The only ones that surprised me was BIC and Vaseline…Thanks really helpfl

  • Simone Brennan says:

You really have to do thorough research – what one regards as an animal-friendly company may indeed have a dark side – of a non-animal-friendly parent company. . . . . If you take a step into Estee Lauder’s website, you will find a huge list of companies under their umbrella . . . . . .Decleor unfortunately has Shiseido as it’s parent company, which is when I stopped using them . . . .Liz Earle has AVON as parent company, although they maintain that they are a ‘stand alone company’ still . . . . . it’s a minefield, tread carefully. . . . .

    • Suzi says:

I totally get your point, Simone. I always make sure to point out whenever a brand is owned by a company that isn’t cruelty-free. I believe everyone has to choose for themselves where they draw the line, as this issue isn’t completely black and white. 🙂

  • Cindy Church says:

That is my younger daughter’s response. I told her to envision whatever the product being dropped or sprayed directly in the poor, immobilized animals eyes or mouth each time she enjoys using the products. Let’s say,, like Clorox or Tilex… Something to think about.

  • Nicki says:

Glad to have this list…will share it to spread the word.

I was really happy to see that I don’t use anything from any of these companies…It has been a hard slog to get there and living in France sometimes it is hard to source some products which are cruelty free…but If I can’t find them I do without. Well done for this..thank you very much

    • Suzi says:

I’m happy to hear that! I imagine it’s not nearly as easy to find cruelty-free options in French pharmacies. 🙁

      • Lux says:

not true! the list id not up to date! it has Fresh as doing animal testing! the only creams I use on my face are from Fresh and I actually spent a lot of time reading the back of the label because i happen to be very allergic and sensitive to some chemicals!
Selling in China is not the same as assembling the product in US. That shipment has to comply with the Chinese governments rules from formula to package, every country has their own rules. just because its done in China, doesn’t mean its done in US as well.

        • Suzi says:

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Fresh unfortunately SELLS their products in mainland China, meaning they do have to comply with the animal testing rules.

  • Icequeen81 says:

sinfull was a surprice, and benefit too, sinfull I know benefit I wanted to try out

  • Billie Denise McGhee says:

So I didn’t see “Gain” under Laundry. Does that mean they’re free and clear? I see that they’re owned by Proctor & Gambel so I assume they test. Also, thank you for making this super helpful list – I trust your research!

  • Sue says:

    Hello,
Benefit does NOT test on animals. Could you tell me where you got that info from?

    • Suzi says:

Unfortunately they do. 🙁 They sell their products in mainland China, where animal testing is required by law.

    • Alexandra says:

Hi, I´ve read in Benefit’s FAQ that they do not test in animals, but many articles (including PETA wich i know is not really reliable) say they DO.. can you tell me how are you so sure they don’t test in animals?

      • Miawna says:

If they sell cosmetics in mainland China, they WILL be tested on animals, as that is the law there. Any company that sells in mainland China supports animal testing. They claim they don’t, but their exception is that they do when required by law. They sell in a county that requires it by law.

        • Dani says:

Yes, I also read that China have a post-animal testing policy? Meaning that companies can find as many loopholes as they like but the finished product may be removed from the shelves at any time and tested on animals.

I would not trust ANY company that sells in China, no matter what spin they put on it. They are not in control, the Chinese authorities are and we all know how bad their animal testing policies are

  • Teddi Pappas says:

Good thing there are so many alternatives. Screw all the testing companies, you wom’t get a penny from me!

  • Anna says:

Dr. Jart has the cruelty free bunny pic on its products… If they do test on animals, is it legal for them to use the sign? Can we do something about them lying?

  • Julie says:

I’m confused about ahava, I thought they didn’t ? Did something change with them?

  • Suzi says:

    Sadly nope.

  • Katariina says:

Peta claims Marc Jacobs Beauty is cruelty free, yet you have it in do test -list. Do they sell in China or what? Shame if they do, cause I love the Daisy Edt :/

Btw, this is a great blog, thank you! 🙂

    • Charlotte Fowler says:

from Marc Jacobs: The following statement is Neville-approved: Marc Jacobs Beauty is a cruelty-free cosmetics brand. We never test on animals or use ingredients tested on animals; nor do we ask vendors to test on our behalf. Marc Jacobs Beauty is not sold in China

    • Erika B says:

Marc Jacobs Fragrance is not CF as it is name use only and I believe it’s Coty who produces it, but Marc Beauty is supposed to be and is not sold in China.

  • Josephine says:

R u sure artistry Amway is not cruelty free? I have searched in free bunny and it doesn’t say so

    • Charlotte Fowler says:

Companies have to pay to be included in free bunny, since it’s technically a type of advertising. So they meet the standards but then have to pay to be given to a consumer. I would use the company questions or sights like these, not PETA given that they’re scum to animals.

  • Tammy St Jean says:

NYX cosmetics dark circle eraser comes in like 3 or 4 colours from light to dark and it’s the perfect salmon coloured colour corrector.

  • Suzi says:

They have a store in Shanghai!

  • Meghan says:

I’m confused, I’m just wondering how pet food brands can justify what they’re selling without testing it on animals in order to see if it works? I’m just curious as to how this would work. I understand makeup, skincare, etc and how that’s just cruel and unusual punishment, but when it’s meant for animals how are they tested when not on animals? I’m just curious 🙂

  • Anon says:

Rimmel london state on their website that they are cruelty free

  • Ronnie says:

Thank you for taking the time to make these lists! I’m curious as to how Walgreens ended up on it, but not other drugstores like CVS, Rite Aid, or Target. I’m definitely going to stop buying Walgreens’ Studio 35 products, what’s the status on the others?

    • Suzi says:

CVS confirmed that their makeup brand Nuance is cruelty-free, but I have yet to hear a confirmation about their generic brand. I’m going to do some research and come up with a full post about generic store brands. Stay tuned! 🙂

      • alyssa says:

I have an app called Cruelty Cutter and I scanned the generic target brand while I was looking for a new body wash and it told me it wasn’t tested on animals, if that helps sway that brand’s case.

      • alyssa says:

Also scanned the CVS generic brand while I was there tonight. Not sure if Vegan for either generic brand, but definitely says cruelty free. The last screen shot is the up&up body wash!

  • Suzi says:

I think you mean “have not” made my list, right? Cetaphil is not cruelty-free. Their finished products aren’t tested on animals, but the products are made by a pharmaceutical company that tests on animals.

  • elle says:

Hi Decleor shave foam gel is amazing and should be easy to get hold of.

  • Caconetes says:

I was so shocked to see here one of my main brands L’Occitane. I was even thinking in applying for working in one of their shops because I love the brand. I read on their website that they do NOT test on animals, although they do sell on China. They don’t do the testing directly AND they’ve been fighting against that testing. They got some products to be sold in China without testing and they keep working on that, so one day all their products will be cruelty free even in China. I’m in process to become an cruelty free customer, but I think I’ll keep buying from L’Occitane, because I think it’s important that the big companies try to change things in China. If we all avoid to support them, it won’t change much, because in China the problem will continue. I mean Chinese people need stuff too, so the change must come from outside China.

    • Suzi says:

I definitely agree with you. And many smaller companies would glady join the Chinese market if they had the funds. I don’t blame the companies that are selling in China but rather the super-outdated law on animal testing there. That’s what has to change.

    • Beth Wilson says:

Same I love L’Occitane and I thought they would be free from animal testing due to the fact they are made from natural sources I was really sad to see this on here especially since they said they didn’t test on animals

    • Dani says:

Just an excuse. By selling in China, they have made a decision that their profits are more important than animals lives and rights. If you buy from them, you support this too. If they really were ethical and wanted change, they would put their money were their mouth is and refuse to sell in China; contributing towards the torture of animals UNTIL China changes its policies. Instead, they want that Chinese money and they don’t care how many bunnies, puppies and mice get tortured in the process. They are depending on people to believe their rubbish that they are ‘working on it’ when they CLEARLY have an option B (it just won’t make them as much money.

If they sell in China they are not cruelty-free

If you buy from them, you are not cruelty-free either.

    • Sarah Taylor says:

Well no the company should refuse to sell to China. And if enough companies do this China will not have avalibily of brands like Dior, Chanel, its those big brands that need to act. Because they will make the impact needed.
I wont buy a product that has sold its ethics for profit.
I dont care how strong their stance is against animal testing. A strong stance is not being a sell out.
So it may be a brand that promotes no animal testing. But so was body shop back in the day. And they got caught out and there was uproar on the tv. Now they are cruetly free.

  • Natasha says:

Thank you for this – I’m going through all of my products at the moment and it’s very sad that a lot of them in there come under this list, and I had no idea! I’ll be getting rid of them and not buying anymore until they change their policy. Are there any affordable make-up alternatives you would recommend? – Tasha

    • Suzi says:

Congrats on making the switch! 🙂 Are you looking for specific product recs? For affordable makeup, I would suggest brands like NYX, Wet’n’Wild, ELF, Hard Candy, Sonia Kashuk. Everything is a bit hit or miss though!

      • Natasha says:

No that’s brilliant advice, thanks! 🙂

        • Diana B says:

Smashbox and Gosh are cruelty free make up brands as well! But you probably already know that by now.. haha On another note, Sally Hansen doesn’t test their nail polish and other products on animals either!

          • Ripley says:

Sally Hansen should test on something given some of their products can lead to cancer

          • Tella says:

Perhaps Sally Hansen should test on human criminals in jail since they deserve to be tortured instead of innocent bunnies. Humans should test their products on themselves, period!

    • Kayla White says:

Younique prides itself on being cruelty free & naturally based. Not to mention amazing! Feel free to look around at my website ♡

      • Marissa says:

Not when it’s being sold in China. Sorry to inform you of this. Younique is still to new to be added to the list. Tobe continued. .. this product will be added to the list very soon. There are ingredients in the products that are tested on animals. Younique you are not currently free.

        • Belinda S says:

Wasn’t aware they sold in China (Hong Kong isn’t subject to animal testing on cosmetics).

    • Nicki says:

I use SoBio here in France…the products are very good and I think my skin looks good with them. Their prices are really good and I can buy them in my local supermarket

      • Monika Willis says:

So biological is made by nuxe and not cruelty free. Just bio. It’s a bit of a trap. I’m currently at monoprix trying to find something!

      • Monika Willis says:

Actually. I’m not sure. I mixed it up with bio beauté. Sorry.☺️

    • Cindy Church says:

in addition to stop using these products, we need to write the company – online and an actual letter – and explain exactly why we will not use or promote their product. Also, that we will actively let everyone know how they test on animals.

    • pinkphoenix1111 . says:

      Also BH cosmetics is great

    • limor says:

Elf, Essence and Milani are all cruelty free!

  • Suzi says:

If you can order online, Personna and Preserve are fairly big brands. You might also find them (or other cruelty-free brands) at health stores.

    • Stephanie Anderson says:

Hi Suzi! I see that Wet N Wild are on the 2019 update. What is going on with them? I don’t care for most of their stuff, buy do use their mascara. Yikes!!

  • Jessica says:

Can you explain what the bold text indicates? Also, when was this list compiled? I am trying to find as up-to-date information as possible. This list is great and I’m hoping it’s recent!! Thanks for all of your research.

    • Suzi says:

Hi Jessica! This list is recent and I update it frequently by tweaking it, and it’s a constant work in progress. The bolded brands are simply the most popular ones.

      • Teddi Pappas says:

All youhave to do is buy products with the leaping bunny.logo or that says it is vegan until you learm what ingredients to avoid.

      • jade says:

mac does test on animals in china as required by law

        • Ade says:

A company with good standards will refuse to test on animals even if they cannot enter a market. So for MAC and other companies that sell in China as wellm they put profits before ethics.

  • ashly says:

Boo to all of these!!! Currently sourcing cleaning products cruelty free so this was really helpful thank you x

    • Samantha Harris says:

Astonish are cruelty free and do a fantastic range

    • Allie says:

Just use plan old vinegar, dish soap and baking soda. That’s all I use to clean my house, aside from window cleaner. Vinegar is magical and you don’t get all those toxic chemicals. My house felt a million times cleaner when i switched from expensive chemical products.

    • Simone Brennan says:

Yes Astonish !! and they are cheap as chips from the 99p store and £1 shops. . . .and M&S for washing liquids, washing up liquids . . . . some people think that makes me loaded to buy such stuff at M&S . . . but when they have offers on, I stock up . . .washing up liquid is about 90p I think . . .

      • Elizabeth vale says:

I bought m&S tissue’s today along with washing up liquid.Aldi also claim their own brand products are free from animal testing

    • tracy says:

Nutrimetics are cruelty free cleaning products and lasts a long time goes far. http://www.nutrimetics.com.au/tracybaker
and not only that the OLC can even clean your fruit and veg

    • Honey says:

      Try honest company

    • Heather D Buell says:

I recommend Dr. Bronner’s magical soaps. The soap can be used for face, hair, body, hands, household cleaning, floors, and even laundry. They use natural, food grade oils that are fair trade, and sustainably sourced. They are leaping bunny certified, and on Suzi’s list. They are an ethical company that gives their employees 15% of their profits, 100% health care, they care and fight for animal care in farming practices, they are non-GMO,and come in a variety of scents that smell incredible. They make bar soaps, toothpaste, lip balm, body balm, lotions, shave cream, bar soap, household cleaner. All around wonderful brand.

    • Jill Wareham says:

For cleaning products in the UK try co op own brand, an ethical company with a leaping bunny on every package.
