The following list consists of companies that are not cruelty-free. Its main source is PETA, and we’ve supplemented it with our own research. These brands engage in animal testing OR fund animal testing in some capacity, the most common example being by testing on animals where the law requires it. Also note that some of the brands listed here misleadingly label themselves as “cruelty-free”, a term that is not regulated.

Big Corporations Who Test On Animals
Most of these brands are owned by a few giant corporations: L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, Procter & Gamble, Clorox, Johnson & Johnson, S.C. Johnson, Colgate-Palmolive, Reckitt Benckiser, Church & Dwight, Unilever, and Henkel.
These companies own the majority of the brands we commonly find in most retailer stores and drugstores, and they’re making no real efforts to change their unethical policies.
There are however two exceptions, the first one being Colgate-Palmolive, which have agreed to gradually change their policy. PETA currently lists Colgate-Palmolive as “working toward regulatory changes to reduce the number of animals used for testing”. This does NOT mean the company is or will be cruelty-free in the near future! It’s only a small step in the right direction, and the company still DOES test on animals at this point.
The second exception consists of a few select brands. While in most cases, brands that are owned by companies that test on animals are not cruelty-free, L’Oreal is one of the few companies to own brands that have kept their ethical stances and have remained cruelty-free under the ownership. The same goes for Too Faced and Becca (now owned by Estee Lauder but still cruelty-free) and Tom’s of Maine (Colgate-Palmolive). All the brands mentioned on this list, however, do test on animals.
Please note that this list is not exhaustive. This list only includes companies that claimed they test on animals at some point, or sell in China; there are many other companies who remained silent about their animal testing policy.

I’m a former lawyer working in compliance, based in Europe, and I’m curious to know how cosmetics brands usually answer your question about being sure that their suppliers do not test on animals.
I know that the EU legislation requires animal testing for any chemical substance that gets produced or imported into the EU over a certain amount. The tests are for environmental and workers’ safety assessments.
The EU ban on cosmetic testing only applies to safety declaration (for cosmetic use), not chemical regulation compliance.
This means that any new-ish cosmetic ingredient is still required to get tested, except for well-known substances that require no additional data (i.e., vitamin C).
I’m curious if brands address this issue because some companies in your cruelty-free list definitely use recently developed cosmetic ingredients, and it sounds strange that these new molecules do not get a safety assessment.
Thank you for sharing this. I used to buy their products thinking they were effective and the only option. The more research and shopping I do, the more I realize there are MANY MANY AMAZING brands out there that do not subject innocent and helpless animals to the torture of animal testing, and are just as effective, if not better. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. Watching videos of rabbits being restrained while a lab worker drops poison into their eyes is horrifying and enough to make you angry and sick. Spend your money wisely and choose cruelty free!

Whatever discomforts my journey takes me on, It’s nothing compared to an animal alone in a sterile cage with no friends or toys or grass to play on…while the evil scientist makes them violently ill. No, I won’t miss my former brands.
Also, I’ve tried Blueland surface cleaners, but they weren’t effective for me. Also sheets laundry detergent, also didn’t like.
But, Method surface cleaner & glass cleaner are very effective, great light natural scent, leaping bunny certified, and safe to use around pets and kids. Also, affordable economy size refill, and, much less expensive in certain stores. So, maybe I’ll try their laundry soap.
It’s really not that difficult. Once we realize that we’ve been tricked into paying for cruelty. Success is always the best revenge!

So disheartening to see so many progressive companies, especially the likes of Origins. I can’t find Stella McCartney fragrances in any list. I know her fashion is line is vegan and I would have thought her fragrances were cruelty free but I have no idea! I’ll have a look on the website. Thank you for this! I have been buying from a small cosmetic Brand in Lebanon and when I emailed them and many more to find out since they don’t have website, no one answered. So i posted on my Instagram Stories and tagged them and they answered saying they are cruelty free and GMP Certified so my question is:

The amount of companies that test on animals is absolutely disgusting!! And half of these i didn’t even know they tested on animals!! I hope they soon realize that this is so wrong on so many different levels

I am shocked I thought in this day and age where we can send men to the moon and are going to send men too mars and we can’t find other ways to test these products ,it should be made legal that they have to tell people that what they are selling is tested on animals. I have bought many cosmetics from qvc and if I knew I would not have bought them I contacted them about this and have had no reply but I will be contacting them again.

Hi Sheryl. NONE of Aldi’s products are tested on animals at any stage. That goes for hygiene, beauty, babycare and laundry products. That’s why I stock up when I can as I don’t live near a branch. Their products win accolades year on year up against overpriced, famous brands, so if Aldi can do it, why can’t they? Disgusting and heartwrenching. Asda’s own brands are also cruelty free. Keep reading labels and google before you buy ????

Hi, I shop with QVC UK and I have just called them to ask if a brand they sell named Australian Bodycare test on animals. They have just told me that NONE of their brands test on animals. However they have just started selling Estee Lauder so I dont understand how this can be true. Is there anyway you can find out for me if QVC UK sells Brands that DO or DO NOT test on animals please? Hi Suzi, could you please tell us whether Surface brand is cruelty-free? The reason I ask is because I have curly hair and it can be hard to find salons that specialize in curly hair care and products. Surface is one of the hair care brands that salons in my area use and this particular salon is a lot cheaper than the ones I’ve found that use DevaCurl, so I just wanted to confirm. I don’t know if you’ll see this, but a really good product for curly hair is Curl Keeper by Jonathan Torch and it’s vegan. I’ve been using it for years on my curly hair and it’s amazing. I would highly recommend it!

I am astonished to find that many of these products are sold in Danish supermarkets taking into consideration that products tested on animals are forbidden in Europe. People generally think that products such as Sanex, Zendium and Yves Rocher are owned by environmentally responsible people and are not aware that many of these sell to China or have other brands tested on animals. I would really like to see all of these brands taken down from the shelves in the supermarket.

I was wondering if The White Company is CF (on their website it says they don’t test, nor their suppliers. But nothing about 3rd parties… ) – Just got some products as a present and while I rather go ” when in doubt don’t use” , my husband seems keen to use it (still working on converting him, one toothpaste at a time!)

Hi there, I am a hairstylist and colourist, and I currently work in a salon that carries some brands that I was curious about and I can receive no information on, I would like to know if Kuene is tested on animals or sold in China. It would be so helpful if there is a list for professional grade hair colour, I did look at yours above but not a complete list. Here are the brands that I am curious about Surface, Davines, Kuene, alaparf.
The only three confirmed cruelty free are Kevin Murphy, organic Colour systems, Paul Mitchell.

Do you have any source material as to how you found out that certain companies are guilty of animal testing? Oriflame for example, is one of the founding companies that hasn’t done animal testing since 1967, as THEY claim. So seeing them on this list, makes me really curious to read any source material that says otherwise? I’ve been using Oriflame for years because of the fact that they claim they don’t test on animals, so if that’s a lie, I’d really love to read articles in which this comes forward. So if you have any source material on this, I’d be very grateful!

I actually reached out to Bath and body works and they said they have never tested any of there products on animals and they have always been cruelty free in that regard, although they can’t guarantee that all there products are “vegan” based on ingredients differing from product to product. However they are cruelty free and even mentioned that the labels on there products even mention that they never test on animals as well.

Did you ask them if they test on animals where required by law or allow third-parties to test on their behalf? This is their policy: “Bath & Body Works policy prohibits the testing of our branded products, formulations and ingredients on animals except in rare cases when required by government regulations. Through our involvement in the Institute for In Vitro Sciences, we are supporting research to develop alternative non-animal methods which we believe will ultimately result in the elimination of animal testing worldwide.”
Translation: not cruelty-free. Victoria’s Secret is in the same boat and owned by the same parent company, and they’re on PETA’s list of companies who test on animals.

I was sad though to find out that Biotherm is not cruelty-free…I was assured when I was buying their body lotion in Denmark that they do not test on animals but your information contradicts to that. Their body lotion was super good for my sensitive and prone to allergies and rashes skin… How do you make sure that Biotherm tests on animals? I would appreciate your answer!

As I never went deeply into the subject, I always thought the company is cruelty free as there is a note that they do not test on anmimals, but that is not the same as cruelty free. Another thing, they provided a notice that they need to test their products in order to enter into the China market. These companies should vanish for misleading their customers.

I have a question actually. I am totally 100% on board with cruelty free and I am trying to be more conscious of what I am supporting as far as my products go. However, how can pet food NOT be animal tested? I mean I know I personally would like my cat food to be cat-approved because that’s the only thing that makes sense. Also, how are diapers and tampons tested on animals? Some of these things on this list don’t have chemicals at all. So how does that work? Thanks in advance.

I’ve always been conscious of using CF products but sometimes I’d be a bit slack and buy them because I either didn’t check or I just assumed they would be CF. However, as of this year I’m aiming to be completely CF but as you can tell from this list, it’s actually pretty difficult to find a brand that doesn’t test on animals! H20 Plus is currently listed although on their website they say: “H2O+ Beauty does not test on animals nor do we ask others to test products or ingredients on animals on our behalf. H2O+ Beauty does not sell products into countries that require animal testing for cosmetic products.” Which was updated in March of 2017. Could I get more detailed info as to why they’re listed? This is my current skincare preference but I’m trying to go Cruelty-Free for 2018. Thanks!!
As everyone has the ability and option to improve themselves through choice and avoidance of negative influences, then it becomes a choice based on compassion for the animals used; a choice based on wanting humane and ethical treatment for helpless animals that do feel sensations and do suffer in pain. If one person can choose to not hurt an animal unnecessarily, then it is positive as a conscious choice for no animal testing to be done. There are better and different research testing methods that involve no animal testing and that would really help the cosmetics companies in the most ways to allow humane 21st Century advancement.

Thanks for the list, it’s so helpful! A few days ago I was having a discussion with a couple of Nuskin distributers about the NuSkin animal testing statement they have on their website. Claiming they don’t test on animals, except when mandated by law and regulatory agencies, which in my option is very misleading. They sell to China, which in itself means they test on animals and I’m also led to believe some of the ingredients used in their products are also tested on animals. What was really sad, the distributors who where clearly brain-washed, claimed every product of Nuskin was natural, chemical free and not tested on animals. They more interested in their own vanity over animal welfare. They had no interest in understanding the truth and did not accept that Nuskin was listed on PETA’s website as a company who TEST on animals. In fact they claim PETA’s list is a lie!!!
Thanks for the article. I was wondering which of the brands you have listed actively test on animals. For example NARS didn’t used to sell to China and didn’t test on animals, therefore was cruelty free. So if it wasn’t for China and their laws, if NARS sold there it would still be cruelty free. I’m not excusing them, I just wanted to know if any of them test on animals in the US, not in China.
I am a bit confused. In their website, Kiehl’s say they are certified by PETA as cruelty free, and they have the leaping bunny. But they are still in this list of companies that test on animals. So what is really the case? Legally they can’t claim they are leaping bunny certified if that is not true.

Hi Taylor. The website you linked to confirms that those companies still test on animals where required by law, hence why they’re not cruelty-free. This is the case for many companies on this list. If a company wants to sell cosmetics in China, they have to pay for animal testing being performed there, which means they’re not completely honest about “not testing on animals”.
Devastated, some of these brands I love but now can no longer use 🙁 Thankful to have spotted this list and am now gonna look for cruelty free products ?
I don’t see Alterna Haircare on either good or bad list. It is also sold at Sephora. I really like their Bamboo line, and their website says they are eco friendly and cruelty free. However, I wonder if they make the exception for the Chinese market. I don’t know if they even sell there. Do you have any additional info?

Hi, a friend of mine is just starting a consulting business with Rodan + Fields and I’d love to support her by trying their products, however, I’m having a very hard time finding out if their ingredients are animal tested. They say the products are not and that their formulas are not animal tested but are not directly answering about the ingredients, which leads me to believe they may be altering the wording to lead people to believe they are safe. Does anyone here have any information? This is what they replied to my inquiry (and my friend who is joining their company) when we wrote to them separately:

That sounds to me like they are referring to the finished product and avoiding the question about the product ingredients.

I really wish this would stop. If companies didn’t sell to China, maybe a lot of these companies wouldn’t show up on this list. Makes me sick to my stomach, they go to so many extremes all in the name of ‘science.’ It’s not science, it’s shameful. Animals and people are the same. I’ve just been given this link on a facebook page for a product range called La Roche-Posay, I had asked if they were cruelty free, and they assured me with this that L’oreal DON’T test on animals… so now I’m confused, are they lying or has this page not been updated since they decided to stop, or are they not testing INGREDIENTS but testing the final product like the slippery little corporate weasels tend to do!?
Unfortunately, this is a misleading claim. While they may not conduct animal testing themselves, their products are sold in mainland China, where animal testing is required for foreign cosmetics. Therefore they are not a cruelty-free brand.

Burts Bees is not cruelty free. They still use carmine as a colorant, you can go to any Burts Bees display and look at their products and you will see carmine in there (carmine is made of crushed up beetles).

I’ve been a fan of H2O+ Beauty for quite some time. I’ve always thought that it was an underrated brand that has always provided great results for me.
After I saw the brand on this list I went to the website and it states: H2O+ Beauty does not test on animals nor do we ask others to test products or ingredients on animals on our behalf. H2O+ Beauty does not sell products into countries that require animal testing for cosmetic products.
I would be interested to see if this is the case and if someone could follow up.

Unbelieveable! Who wold ever think brillo pads and dozens of other products, like tooth paste would be tested on animals? I don’t think the majority of people realize the extent of this problem. Just wondering about Jurlique? Their policy on Animal Testing (http://www.jurlique.com.au/blog/animal-testing-policy)states that they actually don’t – “We do not test our cosmetic and therapeutic products on animals as part of our product development process, or outsource this activity to any third parties, nor have we ever included animal testing in our product development process in the past”. Is this true or not? Have they worded it to exclude other areas of testing? Just curious.
They do say that it is law for products that are imported into China to be tested on animals and that this is done through 3rd party Chinese testers. Is this why they are on the “yes” list? In that case, any company who exports their products to China would be under the same obligation – which puts a bit of a different spin on it don’t you think? The company itself doesn’t test on animals, but in order to be able to export into China, the products are tested on animals before entering the market.
I’m keen to know if Jurlique really do test on animals in any part of the manufacturing of the product.

According to La Roche-Posay they do not sell all their products in China nor do they test on animals (see their February 21st, 2017 comment on the thread linked below stating “Our US specific products (all Anthelios sunscreens) are not tested on animals. These are not sold in China.”).

Please research this. This is not a black and white issue. For many US companies, the products made in the USA ARE cruelty free, but if they import from places like China, they must abide by government regulations. MANY of the companies listed in this ‘article’ have either cut back – or completely out – of importing from China and those that do have limited products so that what they import is NOT tested on animals. They have also introduced alternatives to animal testing in countries that still still require it and in many cases, the countries have listened and are using alternatives to animal testing. Check your facts before spreading stuff like this as a blanket statement. Not cool.
W5 just released hidden video of Animal TORCHURE CHAMBERS in Quebec…It is beyond horrific!!!! They specifically breed beagles (because they are so gentle, & good natured, So it makes the abuse so much easier!!! They chemically burn the skin of large pigs and they use monkeys until they go insane…I could not watch it, they are crying and screaming 24 hrs a day…What you need to know is that the Canadian Gov’t has no laws to protect them !!
MAC had to AGREE TO TEST ON ANIMALS TO GET INTO CHINA (very recently) Pamela Anderson, just wrote a letter to the owner of MAC, to express her disgust of MAC agreeing to test on animals. Pam had been a model for MAC because they did not test on animals ..her org. is The Pamela Anderson Foundation(vs. animal testing and helps to stop abuse of Wild Animals, also she is VEGAN)
Here’s a general guide to whether a product is tested on animals or not – if it’s made in China it IS tested on animals – it’s a legal requirement that products are tested on animals in China. This is not surprising considering they eat dogs and cats over there! So if it says made in China, it is definitely tested on animals and should be avoided. Don’t just check whether the company is cruelty free, check the country where it is made, and whether that country has laws that deem animal testing must legally be performed. And btw, thanks so much for this great list!!
Thanks for this wonderful site and for all the research you do. 🙂 also benefit have really pissed me off, their wording of their animal testing policy on the uk website is bloody clever and it says they don’t test on animals and that they don’t want to get the cruelty free stamp because it implies that none of the ingredients have ever been tested and no company can ever gaurentee that, when in reality, it’s because they sell in China. I brought stuff at the airport before knowing this and It’s really annoyed me. I’ve even recently emailed and gotten no response. Naughty people!
Since their products are being tested on animals in China and they choose to finance those tests, MAC can’t be considered a cruelty-free company. The same applies to any brand who chooses to sell in China (like Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Benefit, and more).
I recently bought some skin care products in Yves Rocher and the website specifically said “test in vitro”. Now the list has confused me… Maybe that means that they only test some products but not all of them?

I think the only ones that surprise me (though many sadden me–Demeter fragrances for instance, because they make my favourite perfumes), are Murphy Oil Soap and Woolite. Those products have been around for ages! Why on earth would they need to keep testing them, let alone on animals? It just makes no sense at all. I didn’t see anything about two of the components I use in my homemade laundry detergent, Fels Naptha (sp?) and Zote. Would they be listed under another brand name?
I used to be an Avon rep too. I wish now I could undo that, and not just because of all the money I lost when they signed up too many reps for my tiny rural area and everyone had to compete to make a single sale. Not only was I selling products that were funding animal testing for Avon’s expansion into China, but the clothes, shoes, etc are made by women and children in sweatshops who are treated terribly and paid terribly. I love Avon bubble bath and (I know this sounds funny) their deodorant, but I’m just going to have to find alternatives.
I’ve just been on Neutrogena website they’re owned by Johnson and Johnson and they say they don’t test on animals. I’m curious cos I’ve seen them on every site bad site but they say they don’t do it. Also Marc Jacobs says they don’t test on animals. Thank you for the list. 🙂

Getting their animal testing policy is like pulling teeth. I tried contacting them several times and they won’t answer basic questions like required by law testing. I can’t say they test on animals though, but they won’t tell us much.

The fact that labs are in different countries doesn’t change the fact that the company as a whole has still devices to operate in place where animal testing is required. They are choosing & paying for animal testing & this are not cruelty free in any way.

i’m not sure about Alberto V05. I know they used to be owned by Unilever, which does test on animals, but the most recent bottle I’ve seen says it’s distributed by High Ridge Brands Co, made in the USA, and not tested on animals. That’s all marketing PR…same blurb from MAC and any other company selling in China. If you buy something that tests in China, the money that you spend goes to the company. The company then has to pay the animal testing agency in China to get approval for sale, so yes, if you buy something in the US, Canada, or where ever, your purchases contribute to the funding of that animal testing. And yes, there is something they can choose to do, not sell in China, like all of the real cruelty-free companies choose to do. Fine if you choose to buy it or sell it, but don’t make false cruelty-free claims.

Just because CHINA tests these products in CHINA does not mean that the PRODUCT COMPANIES test on animals.
If I bought a product and tested it on my cat before I used it, that doesn’t make the company a cruelty brand.
There is nothing the company can do once the products enter China.
If you’re buying your products from China, then you have a problem. If you’re buying them from Europe or USA, then they are CRUELTY FREE.
You can blame the brand for what CHINA does with it.
Your analogy is faulty. Here’s one: Imagine you make cruelty-free soap, and somebody told you you could increase your profits 1000% by selling to China. You are totally aware that this would mean your products would be subject to animal testing, but you do it anyway because $$$. China’s the biggest market in the world, so who cares if a few bunnies have to die?
These companies all know the ethical cost of doing business in China, and choose to do it anyway, as per the above example. How can you defend that?
Actually, you can blame the brand, because it is the brand who is paying an animal testing agency in China so their products can be approved for sale. Given that the Chinese market is probably just as big, if not bigger than that of Europe and North America combined, so it’s not like it’s a minute amount of products being tested, it’s more like half of all of the company’s products.

While they seem to be working toward being truly cruelty-free, they still sell in China. And mainland China still requires, at this time, animal testing. :/ So technically, they’re not cruelty-free. Sorry, Cinnamon Bun.
Also, as a note, I’ve worked for manufacturers in the Health & Beauty industry. When a company includes vague statements like quoted above, you can bet your buns that they’re going to take advantage of the legal wiggle room those statements provide. If they didn’t, those statements wouldn’t even be there.
Unfortunately, non-animal in-vivo testing is way more expensive than traditional animal testing, and these cosmetic mega-companies just don’t care about anything except their profit margins. 🙁 The only way it will change is when the consumer demands higher standards regarding their testing procedures. Which is why it comes down to our thorough understanding of current laws, in the US and globally, and our choices regarding what we will tolerate when it comes to animal torture.
It would be awesome if you labeled those which are sold in China with an asterisk or something as to why they are not cruelty-free. I’m only a transitioning vegan and while many here would still hate me for it, I’d still like to know which are “better” in that it’s China’s fault, not the company as a whole. (Yes I understand the company should still back out of China if they truly care, but it would just also be nice to know in general their stance.)

I find that a lot of people really want to trust that their favorite brands are cruelty-free, and don’t want to hear otherwise. It’s a shame the fake cruelty-free policies are winning sometimes.
This is a very misleading post. I can not stand up for all of these companies… but I can stand up for the one I work for. Mary Kay – USA does not test on animals. Most of our plants in other countries do not test on animals either. However, our plants in China do – because it is REQUIRED there by their laws… not because we choose to. In fact I am most certain that quite a few of these companies listed here are for that very same reason.
And the humane choice is to not to try and change the rules and regulations for product testing in China? It’s no excuse to try and to right someone’s wrong doing? A country that requires many companies’ products if not all of their own products to be tested on animals? How does testing in one single country change their moral stance? So cruel they must be to want to make an actual effort in the world.
This argument really baffles me – it’s not like these companies have been forced at gunpoint to sell in China? They do so because $$$, plain and simple. Profits before ethics. UNILEVER is set to buy Seventh Generation …… although UNILEVER is not listed here. Some of their products are. Such as SUAVE, SUNLIGHT, etc,. So once Seventh Generation is bought buy UNILEVER …… I will not buy Seventh Generation anymore.

Avon has never tested on animals, i use to sell it! They pride themselves on not using animals products or testing on them. Dior uses natural scents in his perfumes and dose not need to test as his brand and many other ‘older classic brands’ listed here are tried and tested and dont test either. You should be careful not to spread gossip. In fact thanks to true campaigners to ban cruelty to animals has pretty much already succeeded as there are very few who can use animals in the creation and testing as it is a world wide ban now! ( in the west) Stay away from asia made products and stick to time tested european brands

Benefit doesn’t actually test on animals, it just doesn’t claim to be cruelty free as it is possible a compound or something similar has been previously tested on animals by an external company. It says so in their FAQs on their website
I mean the laws in Europe ban testing cosmetics on animals, so my favourite French skincare brands Avène and Vichy can’t test on animals or outsource animals testing for products sold within Europe (I think that’s the law right now – correct me if I’m wrong)
But I assume they sell products in China which requires animal testing on cosmetics, which really sucks because in the end it’s up to them where they sell their products. China is the biggest emerging market in the world, and in the end producers will go where there are masses of new consumers. China really does need to change it’s stance on cosmetic animal testing (and it’s stance on a lot of things *cough* human rights abuses *cough* the death penalty *cough*)
Still I don’t know where I stand ethically by using these brands, the only brands I know will keep my skin clear and healthy and in a selfish way – allow myself to feel good – knowing that the products being sold to me have not been tested on animals in Europe, but may have been tested on animals in China. I guess I have a bit to think about now.
Hi Hope. I understand your dilemma. For me, as soon as I learned about how animals were treated in these tests that was it I couldn’t use any of those products any more. If a company doesn’t test in Europe or America but then does just to sell in China I think that’s unethical and I won’t have any part of it. A few years ago I started using essential oils and it opened up a whole new world for me in terms of skin care. Its not just about the essential oils but using completely natural and cheap products you probably have at home anyway to care for your skin. The toxins in these branded products are what are damaging your skin. I recently started a blog about the changes I make if you want to have a look let me know x
It might take some time to find what works for you, but there are a LOT of truly cruelty free options, including ones that are great for very sensitive skin. I highly recommend checking out Paula’s Chouce. Their ingredients/ formulations are top notch, they use no fragrance or known irritants, & they have fab customer service w/ an easy return policy should anything not work out for you. They also offer consultations to help you figure out what will likely work best for your skin type/ issues of you ate overwhelmed by the choices available. I use a number of their products & at 37 my skin is the best it’s ever been. I truly cannot recommend them highly enough.

All product ingredients have to be tested before the FDA can approve it for human use, that’s just how it is and how it always has been. Even if the company is cruelty free, it just means they’re using ingredients that were tested by another company and proven safe by the FDA. So nothing is actually cruelty free.
I’m looking for more info on a company called Just Natural Skin Care, I don’t see them on either of your lists. They claim they do not test, but… a lot of these places claim that…
The Dr Brandt website says that they do not test on animals. From their site: “At dr. brandt® skincare, we are proud to say that we are a cruelty-free-oriented organization. if you look through Mary Kay’s website, they say that they don’t test on animals… if that was missed, do this many companies TRULY test on animals? i just want to support makeup companies that dont test, and I bought Mary Kay because they dont.
I’m actually under the impression that maybelline, l’oread and such do not test on animals (it’s stated on their website under the FAQ page as of a few months ago)
Be careful with products that claim to not test on animals, they often use loopholes by getting other companies to test the products for them. It’s always better to check online before you buy. Or you can use apps that check the product for you. Hope this helps 🙂
Amazing Cosmetics website says they don’t test on animals. And less than a month ago I went to a Clarins training and they said they don’t test on animals. I’m confused 🙁
Hi Samm, I’ve been working for Bobbi Brown (Estee Lauder Companies) and I was informed they are cruelty free. For almost two years I believed in that lie and I was teaching our customers how animal friendly Bobbi Brown is! When I realized what the bs it was, I left my job. I’m a 100% cruelty free makeup artist now and I feel sick every time I see the Bobbi Brown logo. It’s very easy to be misinformed by the companies.

a lot of brands who state they do not test on animals is because they themsleves are not testing (ie; Benefit) and they are hiring 3rd parties to carry out their testing, or they hire someone to hire someone to do it so they can claim they are cruelty free when infact they are not because they care more about profit, its all a marketing scam!! And it sucks that even brands like Nars who are “cruelty free” are owned by monster’s like Shiseido because in the end they are still reaping benefits. DIY or small Indie brands are they way to go!
You can’t trust brand representatives because they usually dont know and you cant trust the packaging because its all cleverly worded to avoid technicalities, such as brands claiming to be all natural, for example Bare Minerals might have (some natural) options but they market themselves and claim a beautiful natural finish to make you believe its all natural.
Animal testing is awful but I also believe animal derived ingriendents are, although the animal would rather be dead then in those cages. Who wants a cruelty-free lipstick made of dead beetles and sheeps wool/oil? Who wants a cruelty-free anti aging moisturizer with snake venom? (kate sommerville) Who wants a cruelty-free face masks with snail-secretions?
What’s more misleading is that animal-derived ingredients are totally considered “natural”. So your natural cruelty-free brand is full of animal by-products and dead insects.
Vegan is the most ethical choice! Even if you can’t fully commit make the difference when you can!
The Body Shop has good products and they are supposed to be cruelty free. I had a rash on my scalp that would not go away and the only thing that helped me was a their Ginger Shampoo. Tom’s Toothpaste is also excellent.
Giorgio Armani are owned by Loreal?? And state on their website that they don’t test on animals?? Is this true?

There’s only an exception if the products are manufactured in China (but not the US). And even then there can be post-market testing. If they’re sold in China and they’re foreign cosmetics, they’re most likely tested on animals.
I was just looking on google to see if Kerastase was cruelty free and a statement on their said that they haven’t done animal testing since the 80s. Just wondered if it doesn’t make it on the list because they export to countries who require testing on animals? Thanks!
I have just checked the website for L’Oreal – Kerastase range as I was discussing this with a friend today about whether they are Animal testing or not and I have found on the website that they are not animal testing since 1989.

Is there any chance you could organize your cruelty-free list like this? Most of the brands on it I’ve never heard of and I have no idea what they sell. It’s hard to search through them all trying to find who sells something specific.
Hello! I have a question: Lancome is mentioned as a brand that tests on animals on the make up section. However, in the fragrances section, Lancome is not mentioned. Does this mean that the perfumes sold by Lancome are cruelty free?
Eucalyptus oil is a holy grail cleaning product! Just a few capfuls in a spray bottle with water. I use it for all benchtops, bathroom and toilet, glass and mirrors!
This list has a lot of false information because a lot of these companies do not test on animals for example its says on the Nivea website “The manufacturers of NIVEA products, Beiersdorf Germany, does not test on animals. Animal testing has been completely banned for all cosmetic products in the EU since 2004, and for all the ingredients of these products since 2013.”
They sell in China, where animal testing for cosmetics is mandatory. Before accusing CFS of presenting false information, you should probably learn the definition of cruelty free.

So I am not sure what to believe anymore. I asked them why it’s not on their website if they claim not to test on animals and the rep I was talking to said he didn’t know but that he will forward my email to the aprorpiate department.
It would make sense, however a lot of the testing done is very abusive.. including tests where the animals are made to eat the food, then have their stomachs cut open to see what the food does to them internally. pet food that is not animal tested uses ingredients that they already know are not harmful, therefor do not need testing.
I think it boils down to where you are in the World and what your laws are. I try to stay is much cruelty free or leaping bunny free. But some products i’m sorry I will keep using, or until i find an alternative that is better or does the same. Trying to hurt ourselves to rather it is or isn’t is just to much time wasted, find it is better to each their own I try hard but sometime it’s not worth trying to find something different

Also urban decay company has been dissolved and that means that it’s all loreal now. Original source belongs to pz cussons and it’s not a separate company
Hate to say it but Kiehls tests on animals. Their products are sold in China and therefore are tested on animals. I’ve recently switched to only cruelty free make up and skincare. I really wanted to get Kiehls but they’re not cruelty free at all. So far for my skincare, I’m looking at Lush, Dermalogica, Drunk Elephant, Kora Organics, Muddy Body & Josie Maran.

L’Oreal also stopped testing on animals. They will not test on animals in any products anymore. The only time they would ever test on animals again is if it is mandatory and they have no other choice, besides that L’Oreal is now cruelty free.

Er, it’s absolutely their CHOICE to sell in a country that requires animal testing. Companies that place profits before ethics don’t get my support, especially not when there are so many fantastic alternatives.

Most animal testing does not accurate show how it will affect a human. There have been many diseases cured in animals being tested that have not been able to cure humans. Also, Many companies that DO NOT test on animals, use more natural ingredients than those that do, making them healthier. You really think that all those chemicals the companies use that do test on animals is healthy?
Very true. Companies that don’t care about the health and welfare of animals usually don’t care much about the health and welfare of humans, either. They only care about the bottom line, filling our homes and environment and bodies with toxic ingredients that are slowly killing us just to earn another dollar. As long as the people who run those companies are getting rich, what do we (or the animals, or the earth) matter? 🙁
Try Ruby Cup, they can be used for 10 years! Drastically decreases waste created by tampons and pads. They’re a EU company and for every cup purchased they donate one to a school girl in Africa.
Basically, if a cosmetics company states that they don’t test on animals, then I wouldn’t like to think they do as it has been illegal to test cosmetic products on animals anywhere in the EU since 2013! If the same company sells their stock in mainland China however, then they are not a cruelty free company as by law their products must be tested before being sold there so they are still enabling this unnecessary cruelty to take place, they all should really say ‘unless required by law’ in their policy and then we will know that means ‘we sell our products in China so we do test on animals’ but sadly they don’t as I have found out from research!
So lots of research of beauty products for us all then until China change their law but websites like this make it soo much easier! : .))
p.s. soo hard to find a nice perfume which is not sold in China as all the main brands do, anybody any ideas?
Perfume is the sticking point for me, too! Sadly, I haven’t unearthed a single ‘designer’ brand that doesn’t sell in China or belong to a testing parent company (also important to me personally). I’m currently using Pacifica but would love to try one of the bespoke brands like Le Labo or Sweet Anthem 🙂
Try Island Organic deodorant. It can be found on Amazon. My husband used to use Old Spice deodorant as well, said it was the only thing that worked for him. He happily uses the Island Organic now. I also use it and it is the only deodorant that has ever worked for me. After a few weeks of use, your body will detox from years of commercial deodorant/antiperspirant use and your natural smell should improve. I’m not ashamed to say that I am a woman that had very stinky pits and for years went from deodorant brand to brand trying to find one that would work, with no long term success. After switching to Island Organic, I can actually skip a day of deodorant and not kill anyone at the end of the day. Try it 🙂

No excuse? So thousands of people should sit without jobs, just because one department is forced to work on animals? It’s not the companies fault and it’s not just for profits… it’s about job creation, but i doubt someone like you would understand.
What a pathetic response. Other types of employment can be found-it is done frequently in today’s workforce. You obviously know nothing about animal testing or available alternatives or perhaps you are too self absorbed and entitled to care about something other than yourself. It is 100% a companies discretion as to whether to test their products or source raw ingredients from suppliers who test. There are other alternatives but it is more attractive to a CEO to add another million or two to his compensation package than to save the life of a beagle or rabbit.

No one forced them to sell in China, it’s not a legal requirement to sell in China, so it is 100% their own choice to have thier products tested on animals.

GlamGlow is cruelty free! Also, the majority of their products are vegan-friendly with the exception of ThirstyMud as it uses Orange Blossom Honey (which is obviously harvested from bees). I’d like to see GlamGlow moved to the cruelty free list.
By the way, SUNLIGHT IS NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS. They are owned by Huish which is Sun Products. Since the beginning they have never tested any of their products on animals. This message is directly from the company, “Sun Products is committed to health, safety and the protection of the environment. As such, we don’t test our products on animals, nor do we ask others to test our products on animals.” This company owns the following brands, Wisk, Sunlight, Surf, ALL and Snuggle. The products are awesome and the only ones I use. Don’t forget to check out those Snuggle scent boosters !

Iams literally cuts their animals open, cuts chunks of out their bodies and leaves them laying on the floor suffering. They are just as evil as L’Oreal, Unilever, SC Johnson, Revlon, Avon, Mary Kay, the list goes on. You cannot call yourself an animal lover and continue purchasing products knowing that animals are brutally tested on them for no reason. You cannot call yourself an animal lover and eat them. That is a fact. Saying you will not stop using a product that you have for years, says a lot about your character. You are the reason these companies that test on animals stay in business. There are so many that sell in China that say they don’t test on animals and it is a lie. Such as Urban Decay, Benefit cosmetics, etc. They test on animals. Soon as I learned I tossed the products in the garbage. They should all be shut down. They are horrible. The things they do to animals is worse than any nightmare you could ever dream up. No product for any reason is worth the death of an animal. The truth is the truth no matter how you want to see it.

Please share you’re sources as I’ve done many essays and research on multiply of these brands, most of all ARTISTRY , they signed the PETA in 1989 and unless government regulated (yes sometimes the government forces it) they will not test on animals ! I’m ashamed too see someone put down so many names of brands that have signed and followed regulations. Please before you write things do you’re proper research!

I wouldn’t trust PETA with anything. They will do whatever it takes, including lieing, to support their facts. And all of those animals they have put to death. PETA should be at the top of NOT cruelty free!
You can easily do your own research. Most companies that choose to sell in China (ie agree to animal testing) will have a ‘where required by law’ statement in their website FAQs.
Clorox does not test on almost all their products. Almay has not tested for over 2p years. Benefits cosmetic do not test on animals. Arm and hammer laundry soap is not tested on animals.
Also I don’t understand why we are still testing on animals anywhere in the world when the prison systems are full to bursting with live test specimens.
Avon was founded as a way to AVOID buying products tested on animals. So for them to all of a sudden be testing on animals is a ridiculous claim. They have it as part of their mission statement “will never test on animals.” So I call B.S. on some of these products.

Cherie, ALL the companies in this list test on animals in some way or another. Please read the fine print and you’ll see that companies like Almay, Revlon, or L’Oreal still test on animals where required by law.

An example would be stating that they’re “against animal testing” or that they “don’t ask others to test on their behalf”. Another common issue is companies stating that they don’t test on animals “except where required by law”, which means they’re not truly cruelty-free.
These are all global companies, and the profits from US sales are not in a separate bubble. If you buy something in the US, other parts of North America like Canada or Mexico, Europe, etc., the profits all go to the one company. So if they sell in China, the profits from something you bought are used by them to pay for the animal testing that allows them to sell in China.
HI, I wrote you earlier about Marc Jacobs and coty. They promised they didn’t test on animals, but they lied. They were very deceiving . They may not test in animals here in the states , but they sell to China and they do the testing. I will contacting them and telling how disappointing they are and how sneaky they were to a once loyal customer. Hi, I contacted Coty and Marc Jacobs and they both told me they DO NOT TEST on animals . Coty actually sent me a copy if a legal documents with their entire policy on no animal testing . Please tell me why you have them on the test list? Is there something I’m not asking the two companies the right way? I don’t want to buy from them if they actually test on animals. Although I agree with your general point and think animal testing is cruel and mostly unnecessary, I am a little confused about the pet food. How else would you test pet food? Human food is tested on humans too… Please explain.
The issue is the method in which the pet food is “tested”. Animal testing here refers to using lab animals, which are treated extremely poorly. Although lab conditions today are better than they used to be, there are alternatives to using lab animals. The alternative is using “real” pets that go on with their day-to-day lives as opposed to caged lab animals. I hope this explains it a bit better! I did write a lengthly post on the topic. 🙂
You do know that even if the company did not test on animals, at least one (and in most cases almost all) were tested on animals. They wouldn’t be allowed to be sold if they weren’t.
Glamglow is claiming to be cruelty free on their site and have mostly vegan products with exeption of thirstymud. So I’m wondering why they are on the list?

The law was only altered for local companies selling SOME types of cosmetics, so the law is still 100% unchanged for foreign companies like Glamglow. And they do sell in mainland China unfortunately, not just in Hong Kong where that law doesn’t apply. 🙁

I only saw one of the products on here I use which is not cruelty free. Unfortunately, I don’t think an alternative exists. Sorry, the Mizani line of products has been the only line that works on my hair. If anyone can provide me with a cruelty-free alternative, I’ll be grateful.
Apparently L’Occitane stated that they didn’t test on animals was this list made before they said this or are they lying when they said they didn’t test on them 🙂
They test on animals where required by law unfortunately, and they sell their products where the law requires animal testing (China)! This is why they can’t be considered cruelty-free.
Shit! Literally every makeup brand (besides elf), face wash, hair care, and cleaning product I use was on here! I recently decided to try and use less non-cruelty free products but now it looks like I have to find new brands for everything! I’m kind of overwhelmed.
I think it’s disgusting that in this day and age that there are that many companies out there still testing on animals – quite frankly I’m shocked, I have now made the switch and I have just ordered my full makeup from BarryM, can you plesae advise of a cruelty free toothpaste and moisturiser? I will be going through all my lotions and potions in the next few weeks and disguarding anything that so much as hints at pain and suffering.
Hello! I didn’t see Tom’s of Maine on your list and they are actually owned by Colgate who test on animals. I don’t know if you were informed of this, I wasn’t until literally half an hour ago and I am completely devastated.
Although Tom’s is now owned by a company that tests on animals, the brand itself remained cruelty-free after the change. If you don’t support any brand owned by a company that tests on animals, I realize this doesn’t soften the blow unfortunately. But if it’s of any comfort, Tom’s of Maine is still certified by the Leaping Bunny. I hope you find another brand you love that’s 100% cruelty-free (I can recommend Desert Essence, Alba Botanica, or Jason). Best of luck!

How, exactly, do some of these companies test on animals? Such as the animal food products: how is the testing cruel? And Pampers and Puffs–diapers and tissue paper? How are those tested in a cruel way?
I am all for switching. I’m just honestly curious because I don’t understand how tissue papers can be tested in a cruel way…???
most likely its the chemicals in them. For example, disposable nappies have absorbent chemicals and that is what is tested. Some tissues have essential oils etc and those will be tested. So what we get is harmless but they most likely tested other things that were chucked because they harmed the animal they tested on. Also animals used for animal testing are often kept in very bad conditions so its cruel all round.
there are prisons overflowing with murders, rapists & pedophiles… Test on them, not innocent animals. Wouldn’t the testing be more accurate on a human? Test on the death row inmates!

Unfortunately I can’t go cruelty free right now as I don’t have much money at the moment to get rid of all the products but once I used them up I’ll look for a cruelty free brand to replace them.
NOT COLGATE! There is at least one error on this list. As a long-term employee who is very familiar with the processes and procedures at the Colgate Palmolive Science and Technology Center, I am absolutely certain and can assure everyone that Colgate does not use animals for product testing.
I thought I was doing quite good until I scrolled down to Vaseline, then Dove soap. Really? I still use them and then, because I am home sick with a cold I looked up Vicks. VICKS – I have been rubbing myself with Vicks all this week. I cannot do that any more. What alternative is there for that. Also so many soaps. For some things there does not seem to be an alternative but I am definitely going to stop using what I have mentioned. Anybody tell me an alternative to Vicks?
For anyone reading this at a later date and wondering the same, here are some essential oils that can help. Use either;
>Lemon or Peppermint (for cough and congestion)
>Frankincense (for clearing nasal passages and lungs)
>Lavender (for sinus congestion)
>Eucalyptus (nasal congestions and upper respiratory infections)
MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BOTTLE! Mix a few drops of oil in large glass bowl of hot water and drape a towel over your head to catch the steam. Keep face far enough away that the steam doesn’t burn your skin and breathe in through the nose for approx 10 mins (or longer if needed)
Or, Mark, we could test on you. I would feel bad…. especially when you writhed in pain, vomited your guts out, or had your vocal cords cut so they couldn’t hear your cries. Now, I’m really not serious, but your reasoning is lazy and selfish. Evil triumphs when good men do nothing, The question is, are you a good man? Hi, I ma having serious problems with cruelty free brands, I use a retinol cream for face and one for eyes but tried Oz and Paula’s choice and my skin breaks down (today is like I have been bitten my mosquitoes)…any idea of where to start? I am a guy, cruelty free cosmetics has been the hardest thing since I turned vegan a year ago…thank you girls
Organic is also out of a lot of people’s price range because, while finding cruelty free brands can be affordable, organic is not so much. Organic is great and all, but don’t shame people who don’t go organic when it may not be in their price range.
Good to do some research on prices. Prices have dropped on many cruelty-free products. Dr Bonner’s seems expensive but it is diluted by water when you use it. It goes a long way!
Hi, chemicals can seep through the skin and then get into the blood stream, be careful with what you use when washing your hair – as nasties can get into the scalp and go into your brain! No nasty chemicals – all good. I still don’t trust a lot of these companies at any rate, always need professionals in order to go through the policies which the ordinary person just cannot understand. Sick and tired of this sort of thing, can read, but not any long, arduous policies, if you know what I mean! Happy organic (Organic Certified) and cruelty free hunting! No animal abuse, no excuses.

Why would they test pet food products on animals? I’m not a vegan nor a vegetarian but it’s a little sad and interesting to discover the products that do test on animals. They probably start their pet food business because they love pets and they feel that connection that I do. Oh and they decide to test animals like they don’t care. It’s also astonishing because Blue Buffalo always advertises that their dog didn’t like the chick-peas in their food, so they switched to Blue for real meat. Yes, dogs would prefer real meat then chick-peas, but we would all rather at least you have food then potentially kill animals. Even as a non vegan, it confuses me. It doesn’t go into a puzzle.
Yves Rocher do not test on animals. From their website:

Can someone please advise why Benefit is on this list? And on the PETA list? I looked them up because I really love their products and this is what it said. “Benefit does not test our products on animals.

Regarding “how can you not test food on animals”, the tests are SOMETIMES done in extremely inhumane conditions where the dogs are kept in small cages, poor conditions, and die as a result.
There’s no real need to test pet food on animals though, as there are alternative methods. Some pet food companies don’t use animal testing at all.

Great list! However, I do have a question about OPI. I read that they used to test on animals a long time ago but then stopped several years ago. I also heard that they were bought by a company that DOES test on animals- but they still do NOT test their products on animals. It is the same situation with Body Shop products; the company that owns them tests on animals, but the Body Shop does not. I have switched from OPI and Loreal nail polish to Sally Hansen, and Gosh because they do not test on animals, and because I want to be 100% that any brand I use, is cruelty free. <3

Madeline…Instead of being an ignorant twat-waffle, maybe use your brain. It’s not a matter of feeding animals the food and calling it a day. Feeding trials are done in laboratories, where animals are kept unhealthy and confined in small cages. Also, said animals are brutalized for no reason. L’Oreal are owned by Unilever,animal testers,wouldn’t touch them….pretty sure they make Stella McCartney’s fragrance as well,another celebrity hypocrite….

I get where you’re coming from, but the ban only applies to cosmetics. A lot of these French companies work with pharmaceutical companies that still test on animals.
You really have to do thorough research – what one regards as an animal-friendly company may indeed have a dark side – of a non-animal-friendly parent company. . . . . If you take a step into Estee Lauder’s website, you will find a huge list of companies under their umbrella . . . . . .Decleor unfortunately has Shiseido as it’s parent company, which is when I stopped using them . . . .Liz Earle has AVON as parent company, although they maintain that they are a ‘stand alone company’ still . . . . . it’s a minefield, tread carefully. . . . .
I totally get your point, Simone. I always make sure to point out whenever a brand is owned by a company that isn’t cruelty-free. I believe everyone has to choose for themselves where they draw the line, as this issue isn’t completely black and white. 🙂
That is my younger daughter’s response. I told her to envision whatever the product being dropped or sprayed directly in the poor, immobilized animals eyes or mouth each time she enjoys using the products. Let’s say,, like Clorox or Tilex… Something to think about.

I was really happy to see that I don’t use anything from any of these companies…It has been a hard slog to get there and living in France sometimes it is hard to source some products which are cruelty free…but If I can’t find them I do without. Well done for this..thank you very much
not true! the list id not up to date! it has Fresh as doing animal testing! the only creams I use on my face are from Fresh and I actually spent a lot of time reading the back of the label because i happen to be very allergic and sensitive to some chemicals!
Selling in China is not the same as assembling the product in US. That shipment has to comply with the Chinese governments rules from formula to package, every country has their own rules. just because its done in China, doesn’t mean its done in US as well.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Fresh unfortunately SELLS their products in mainland China, meaning they do have to comply with the animal testing rules.
So I didn’t see “Gain” under Laundry. Does that mean they’re free and clear? I see that they’re owned by Proctor & Gambel so I assume they test. Also, thank you for making this super helpful list – I trust your research!
Hi, I´ve read in Benefit’s FAQ that they do not test in animals, but many articles (including PETA wich i know is not really reliable) say they DO.. can you tell me how are you so sure they don’t test in animals?
If they sell cosmetics in mainland China, they WILL be tested on animals, as that is the law there. Any company that sells in mainland China supports animal testing. They claim they don’t, but their exception is that they do when required by law. They sell in a county that requires it by law.
Yes, I also read that China have a post-animal testing policy? Meaning that companies can find as many loopholes as they like but the finished product may be removed from the shelves at any time and tested on animals.
I would not trust ANY company that sells in China, no matter what spin they put on it. They are not in control, the Chinese authorities are and we all know how bad their animal testing policies are

Marc Jacobs Fragrance is not CF as it is name use only and I believe it’s Coty who produces it, but Marc Beauty is supposed to be and is not sold in China.
Companies have to pay to be included in free bunny, since it’s technically a type of advertising. So they meet the standards but then have to pay to be given to a consumer. I would use the company questions or sights like these, not PETA given that they’re scum to animals.
I’m confused, I’m just wondering how pet food brands can justify what they’re selling without testing it on animals in order to see if it works? I’m just curious as to how this would work. I understand makeup, skincare, etc and how that’s just cruel and unusual punishment, but when it’s meant for animals how are they tested when not on animals? I’m just curious 🙂

CVS confirmed that their makeup brand Nuance is cruelty-free, but I have yet to hear a confirmation about their generic brand. I’m going to do some research and come up with a full post about generic store brands. Stay tuned! 🙂
I have an app called Cruelty Cutter and I scanned the generic target brand while I was looking for a new body wash and it told me it wasn’t tested on animals, if that helps sway that brand’s case.
Also scanned the CVS generic brand while I was there tonight. Not sure if Vegan for either generic brand, but definitely says cruelty free. The last screen shot is the up&up body wash!
I think you mean “have not” made my list, right? Cetaphil is not cruelty-free. Their finished products aren’t tested on animals, but the products are made by a pharmaceutical company that tests on animals.
I was so shocked to see here one of my main brands L’Occitane. I was even thinking in applying for working in one of their shops because I love the brand. I read on their website that they do NOT test on animals, although they do sell on China. They don’t do the testing directly AND they’ve been fighting against that testing. They got some products to be sold in China without testing and they keep working on that, so one day all their products will be cruelty free even in China. I’m in process to become an cruelty free customer, but I think I’ll keep buying from L’Occitane, because I think it’s important that the big companies try to change things in China. If we all avoid to support them, it won’t change much, because in China the problem will continue. I mean Chinese people need stuff too, so the change must come from outside China.
I definitely agree with you. And many smaller companies would glady join the Chinese market if they had the funds. I don’t blame the companies that are selling in China but rather the super-outdated law on animal testing there. That’s what has to change.

Just an excuse. By selling in China, they have made a decision that their profits are more important than animals lives and rights. If you buy from them, you support this too. If they really were ethical and wanted change, they would put their money were their mouth is and refuse to sell in China; contributing towards the torture of animals UNTIL China changes its policies. Instead, they want that Chinese money and they don’t care how many bunnies, puppies and mice get tortured in the process. They are depending on people to believe their rubbish that they are ‘working on it’ when they CLEARLY have an option B (it just won’t make them as much money.

Congrats on making the switch! 🙂 Are you looking for specific product recs? For affordable makeup, I would suggest brands like NYX, Wet’n’Wild, ELF, Hard Candy, Sonia Kashuk. Everything is a bit hit or miss though!
Smashbox and Gosh are cruelty free make up brands as well! But you probably already know that by now.. haha On another note, Sally Hansen doesn’t test their nail polish and other products on animals either!
Perhaps Sally Hansen should test on human criminals in jail since they deserve to be tortured instead of innocent bunnies. Humans should test their products on themselves, period!

I use SoBio here in France…the products are very good and I think my skin looks good with them. Their prices are really good and I can buy them in my local supermarket
in addition to stop using these products, we need to write the company – online and an actual letter – and explain exactly why we will not use or promote their product. Also, that we will actively let everyone know how they test on animals.

A company with good standards will refuse to test on animals even if they cannot enter a market. So for MAC and other companies that sell in China as wellm they put profits before ethics.
Just use plan old vinegar, dish soap and baking soda. That’s all I use to clean my house, aside from window cleaner. Vinegar is magical and you don’t get all those toxic chemicals. My house felt a million times cleaner when i switched from expensive chemical products.

I’m a former lawyer working in compliance, based in Europe, and I’m curious to know how cosmetics brands usually answer your question about being sure that their suppliers do not test on animals.
I know that the EU legislation requires animal testing for any chemical substance that gets produced or imported into the EU over a certain amount. The tests are for environmental and workers’ safety assessments.
The EU ban on cosmetic testing only applies to safety declaration (for cosmetic use), not chemical regulation compliance.
This means that any new-ish cosmetic ingredient is still required to get tested, except for well-known substances that require no additional data (i.e., vitamin C).
I’m curious if brands address this issue because some companies in your cruelty-free list definitely use recently developed cosmetic ingredients, and it sounds strange that these new molecules do not get a safety assessment.

Thank you for sharing this. I used to buy their products thinking they were effective and the only option. The more research and shopping I do, the more I realize there are MANY MANY AMAZING brands out there that do not subject innocent and helpless animals to the torture of animal testing, and are just as effective, if not better. It doesn’t take a genius to figure that out. Watching videos of rabbits being restrained while a lab worker drops poison into their eyes is horrifying and enough to make you angry and sick. Spend your money wisely and choose cruelty free!

So sad. I’m fragrance & chemical sensitive. And broke. But, nothing is worth torturing animals.
Whatever discomforts my journey takes me on, It’s nothing compared to an animal alone in a sterile cage with no friends or toys or grass to play on…while the evil scientist makes them violently ill. No, I won’t miss my former brands.
Also, I’ve tried Blueland surface cleaners, but they weren’t effective for me. Also sheets laundry detergent, also didn’t like.
But, Method surface cleaner & glass cleaner are very effective, great light natural scent, leaping bunny certified, and safe to use around pets and kids. Also, affordable economy size refill, and, much less expensive in certain stores. So, maybe I’ll try their laundry soap.
It’s really not that difficult. Once we realize that we’ve been tricked into paying for cruelty. Success is always the best revenge!

I have been buying from a small cosmetic Brand in Lebanon and when I emailed them and many more to find out since they don’t have website, no one answered. So i posted on my Instagram Stories and tagged them and they answered saying they are cruelty free and GMP Certified so my question is:

The amount of companies that test on animals is absolutely disgusting!! And half of these i didn’t even know they tested on animals!! I hope they soon realize that this is so wrong on so many different levels

I am shocked I thought in this day and age where we can send men to the moon and are going to send men too mars and we can’t find other ways to test these products ,it should be made legal that they have to tell people that what they are selling is tested on animals. Hi Sheryl. NONE of Aldi’s products are tested on animals at any stage. That goes for hygiene, beauty, babycare and laundry products. That’s why I stock up when I can as I don’t live near a branch. Their products win accolades year on year up against overpriced, famous brands, so if Aldi can do it, why can’t they? Disgusting and heartwrenching. Asda’s own brands are also cruelty free. Keep reading labels and google before you buy ????

Hi, I shop with QVC UK and I have just called them to ask if a brand they sell named Australian Bodycare test on animals. They have just told me that NONE of their brands test on animals. Hi Suzi, could you please tell us whether Surface brand is cruelty-free? The reason I ask is because I have curly hair and it can be hard to find salons that specialize in curly hair care and products. Surface is one of the hair care brands that salons in my area use and this particular salon is a lot cheaper than the ones I’ve found that use DevaCurl, so I just wanted to confirm. I am astonished to find that many of these products are sold in Danish supermarkets taking into consideration that products tested on animals are forbidden in Europe. People generally think that products such as Sanex, Zendium and Yves Rocher are owned by environmentally responsible people and are not aware that many of these sell to China or have other brands tested on animals. I would really like to see all of these brands taken down from the shelves in the supermarket.
From my point of research L‘occitane and Nivea do not test on animals at any production stages.

I was wondering if The White Company is CF (on their website it says they don’t test, nor their suppliers. But nothing about 3rd parties… ) – Just got some products as a present and while I rather go ” when in doubt don’t use” , my husband seems keen to use it (still working on converting him, one toothpaste at a time!)

Hi there, I am a hairstylist and colourist, and I currently work in a salon that carries some brands that I was curious about and I can receive no information on, I would like to know if Kuene is tested on animals or sold in China. It would be so helpful if there is a list for professional grade hair colour, I did look at yours above but not a complete list. Here are the brands that I am curious about Surface, Davines, Kuene, alaparf.
The only three confirmed cruelty free are Kevin Murphy, organic Colour systems, Paul Mitchell.

Do you have any source material as to how you found out that certain companies are guilty of animal testing? Oriflame for example, is one of the founding companies that hasn’t done animal testing since 1967, as THEY claim. So seeing them on this list, makes me really curious to read any source material that says otherwise? I’ve been using Oriflame for years because of the fact that they claim they don’t test on animals, so if that’s a lie, I’d really love to read articles in which this comes forward. So if you have any source material on this, I’d be very grateful!

On the bottle of body wash I got from Bath and Body works it states “We do not test on animals” is this not true???
I actually reached out to Bath and body works and they said they have never tested any of there products on animals and they have always been cruelty free in that regard, although they can’t guarantee that all there products are “vegan” based on ingredients differing from product to product. However they are cruelty free and even mentioned that the labels on there products even mention that they never test on animals as well.

This is their policy: “Bath & Body Works policy prohibits the testing of our branded products, formulations and ingredients on animals except in rare cases when required by government regulations. Through our involvement in the Institute for In Vitro Sciences, we are supporting research to develop alternative non-animal methods which we believe will ultimately result in the elimination of animal testing worldwide.”
Translation: not cruelty-free. Victoria’s Secret is in the same boat and owned by the same parent company, and they’re on PETA’s list of companies who test on animals.

As I never went deeply into the subject, I always thought the company is cruelty free as there is a note that they do not test on anmimals, but that is not the same as cruelty free. Another thing, they provided a notice that they need to test their products in order to enter into the China market. These companies should vanish for misleading their customers.

I have a question actually. I am totally 100% on board with cruelty free and I am trying to be more conscious of what I am supporting as far as my products go. However, how can pet food NOT be animal tested? I mean I know I personally would like my cat food to be cat-approved because that’s the only thing that makes sense. H20 Plus is currently listed although on their website they say: “H2O+ Beauty does not test on animals nor do we ask others to test products or ingredients on animals on our behalf. H2O+ Beauty does not sell products into countries that require animal testing for cosmetic products.” Which was updated in March of 2017. Could I get more detailed info as to why they’re listed? As everyone has the ability and option to improve themselves through choice and avoidance of negative influences, then it becomes a choice based on compassion for the animals used; a choice based on wanting humane and ethical treatment for helpless animals that do feel sensations and do suffer in pain. If one person can choose to not hurt an animal unnecessarily, then it is positive as a conscious choice for no animal testing to be done. There are better and different research testing methods that involve no animal testing and that would really help the cosmetics companies in the most ways to allow humane 21st Century advancement.
One point. I would hope that pet food manufacturers do test on animals. After all it will be animals that eat it.

Cat food should be tested using cats
This of course after other non animal tests to establish that the food is appropriate in terms of nutrients etc.

A few days ago I was having a discussion with a couple of Nuskin distributers about the NuSkin animal testing statement they have on their website. Claiming they don’t test on animals, except when mandated by law and regulatory agencies, which in my option is very misleading. They sell to China, which in itself means they test on animals and I’m also led to believe some of the ingredients used in their products are also tested on animals. What was really sad, the distributors who where clearly brain-washed, claimed every product of Nuskin was natural, chemical free and not tested on animals. They more interested in their own vanity over animal welfare. They had no interest in understanding the truth and did not accept that Nuskin was listed on PETA’s website as a company who TEST on animals. In fact they claim PETA’s list is a lie!!!

Thanks for the article. I was wondering which of the brands you have listed actively test on animals. For example NARS didn’t used to sell to China and didn’t test on animals, therefore was cruelty free. So if it wasn’t for China and their laws, if NARS sold there it would still be cruelty free. I’m not excusing them, I just wanted to know if any of them test on animals in the US, not in China.
I am a bit confused. In their website, Kiehl’s say they are certified by PETA as cruelty free, and they have the leaping bunny. But they are still in this list of companies that test on animals. So what is really the case? Legally they can’t claim they are leaping bunny certified if that is not true.

Hello, I was wondering if Skinfood is cruelty free? I’ve checked their website and they say they are, but I haven’t found them in cruelty free brands lists so I’m not sure if they really are or not, or if they sell their products in China
I don’t think you’re being entirely fair to some of the companies listed. For example, look at what you have for some of the cosmetic companies, who clearly shouldn’t be on the list (according to Snopes: https://www.snopes.com/critters/cruelty/avontesting.asp). For someone searching for helpful and accurate cruelty-free information, your list is what seems to be cruel. Now I don’t now how much of your website I can really trust, although I was initially quite excited.
Hi Taylor. The website you linked to confirms that those companies still test on animals where required by law, hence why they’re not cruelty-free. This is the case for many companies on this list. If a company wants to sell cosmetics in China, they have to pay for animal testing being performed there, which means they’re not completely honest about “not testing on animals”.
Devastated, some of these brands I love but now can no longer use 🙁 Thankful to have spotted this list and am now gonna look for cruelty free products ?
I don’t see Alterna Haircare on either good or bad list. It is also sold at Sephora. I really like their Bamboo line, and their website says they are eco friendly and cruelty free. However, I wonder if they make the exception for the Chinese market. I don’t know if they even sell there. Do you have any additional info?

I’m doing a university project on this matter as I’ve recently become aware of the lies and deceit behind pharmaceutical and cosmetic corporations regarding their animal testing standards/practices. Having found your site so helpful in the contribution to my research I was wondering if you would be able to help me out with sourcing some of this information. What are the important articles/ papers I should be aware of? I am from the UK and know our regulations differ from those in the US, but it is so insightful learning of these corrupt brands that can be found on every one of our supermarket shelves. I have just created a petition in regards to animal testing. I am also totally against this because the animal did not do anything wrong. We need to put an end to this, and soon. I’m not going to live my life knowing that this is going on and not doing anything about it.

Hi, a friend of mine is just starting a consulting business with Rodan + Fields and I’d love to support her by trying their products, however, I’m having a very hard time finding out if their ingredients are animal tested. They say the products are not and that their formulas are not animal tested but are not directly answering about the ingredients, which leads me to believe they may be altering the wording to lead people to believe they are safe. Does anyone here have any information? This is what they replied to my inquiry (and my friend who is joining their company) when we wrote to them separately:
“Rodan + Fields does not test its formulas on animals. We use alternate in-vitro methods, and voluntary compensated human subjects to verify the safety and efficacy of our formulations.”
That sounds to me like they are referring to the finished product and avoiding the question about the product ingredients.
Maybe a list of companies that DONT test on animals would be good to have. It might be shorter! Oh and how do pet food companies test on animals? Do they feed them pet food?

I really wish this would stop. If companies didn’t sell to China, maybe a lot of these companies wouldn’t show up on this list. Makes me sick to my stomach, they go to so many extremes all in the name of ‘science.’ It’s not science, it’s shameful. Animals and people are the same. We bleed, hurt, cry, reproduce, love and most importantly live. Nothing should be tested on living things, and especially not in the horrible ways they are. L’Oreal is one of the few companies to own brands that have kept their ethical stances and have remained cruelty-free under the ownership.

L’Oreal does test on animals and is not a cruelty-free brand. They do own some brands that do not sell in China and are cruelty-free.
I’ve just been given this link on a facebook page for a product range called La Roche-Posay, I had asked if they were cruelty free, and they assured me with this that L’oreal DON’T test on animals… so now I’m confused, are they lying or has this page not been updated since they decided to stop, or are they not testing INGREDIENTS but testing the final product like the slippery little corporate weasels tend to do!?
Unfortunately, this is a misleading claim. While they may not conduct animal testing themselves, their products are sold in mainland China, where animal testing is required for foreign cosmetics. Therefore they are not a cruelty-free brand.

Burts Bees is not cruelty free. They still use carmine as a colorant, you can go to any Burts Bees display and look at their products and you will see carmine in there (carmine is made of crushed up beetles).

I’ve been a fan of H2O+ Beauty for quite some time. I’ve always thought that it was an underrated brand that has always provided great results for me.
After I saw the brand on this list I went to the website and it states: H2O+ Beauty does not test on animals nor do we ask others to test products or ingredients on animals on our behalf. H2O+ Beauty does not sell products into countries that require animal testing for cosmetic products.
I would be interested to see if this is the case and if someone could follow up.

I am all for using cruelty free products and am actively trying to change the products I use, but come on lets be serious now who decided to put pet food on the list…

Unbelieveable! Who wold ever think brillo pads and dozens of other products, like tooth paste would be tested on animals? I don’t think the majority of people realize the extent of this problem. Just wondering about Jurlique? Their policy on Animal Testing (http://www.jurlique.com.au/blog/animal-testing-policy)states that they actually don’t – “We do not test our cosmetic and therapeutic products on animals as part of our product development process, or outsource this activity to any third parties, nor have we ever included animal testing in our product development process in the past”. Is this true or not? Have they worded it to exclude other areas of testing? Just curious.
They do say that it is law for products that are imported into China to be tested on animals and that this is done through 3rd party Chinese testers. Is this why they are on the “yes” list? In that case, any company who exports their products to China would be under the same obligation – which puts a bit of a different spin on it don’t you think? The company itself doesn’t test on animals, but in order to be able to export into China, the products are tested on animals before entering the market.
I’m keen to know if Jurlique really do test on animals in any part of the manufacturing of the product.

Please research this. This is not a black and white issue. For many US companies, the products made in the USA ARE cruelty free, but if they import from places like China, they must abide by government regulations. MANY of the companies listed in this ‘article’ have either cut back – or completely out – of importing from China and those that do have limited products so that what they import is NOT tested on animals. They have also introduced alternatives to animal testing in countries that still still require it and in many cases, the countries have listened and are using alternatives to animal testing. Check your facts before spreading stuff like this as a blanket statement. Not cool.

W5 just released hidden video of Animal TORCHURE CHAMBERS in Quebec…It is beyond horrific!!!! They specifically breed beagles (because they are so gentle, & good natured, So it makes the abuse so much easier!!! They chemically burn the skin of large pigs and they use monkeys until they go insane…I could not watch it, they are crying and screaming 24 hrs a day…What you need to know is that the Canadian Gov’t has no laws to protect them !!
MAC had to AGREE TO TEST ON ANIMALS TO GET INTO CHINA (very recently) Pamela Anderson, just wrote a letter to the owner of MAC, to express her disgust of MAC agreeing to test on animals. Pam had been a model for MAC because they did not test on animals ..her org. is The Pamela Anderson Foundation(vs. animal testing and helps to stop abuse of Wild Animals, also she is VEGAN)

Here’s a general guide to whether a product is tested on animals or not – if it’s made in China it IS tested on animals – it’s a legal requirement that products are tested on animals in China. This is not surprising considering they eat dogs and cats over there! So if it says made in China, it is definitely tested on animals and should be avoided. Don’t just check whether the company is cruelty free, check the country where it is made, and whether that country has laws that deem animal testing must legally be performed. And btw, thanks so much for this great list!!

Thanks for this wonderful site and for all the research you do. 🙂 also benefit have really pissed me off, their wording of their animal testing policy on the uk website is bloody clever and it says they don’t test on animals and that they don’t want to get the cruelty free stamp because it implies that none of the ingredients have ever been tested and no company can ever gaurentee that, when in reality, it’s because they sell in China. I brought stuff at the airport before knowing this and It’s really annoyed me. I’ve even recently emailed and gotten no response. Naughty people!

Since their products are being tested on animals in China and they choose to finance those tests, MAC can’t be considered a cruelty-free company. The same applies to any brand who chooses to sell in China (like Clinique, Bobbi Brown, Benefit, and more).

I think the only ones that surprise me (though many sadden me–Demeter fragrances for instance, because they make my favourite perfumes), are Murphy Oil Soap and Woolite. Those products have been around for ages! Why on earth would they need to keep testing them, let alone on animals? It just makes no sense at all. I didn’t see anything about two of the components I use in my homemade laundry detergent, Fels Naptha (sp?) and Zote. Would they be listed under another brand name?
I used to be an Avon rep too. I wish now I could undo that, and not just because of all the money I lost when they signed up too many reps for my tiny rural area and everyone had to compete to make a single sale. Not only was I selling products that were funding animal testing for Avon’s expansion into China, but the clothes, shoes, etc are made by women and children in sweatshops who are treated terribly and paid terribly. I love Avon bubble bath and (I know this sounds funny) their deodorant, but I’m just going to have to find alternatives.

I’m so angry right now because when I bought my oil skin at Kiehl’s. Before I purchase i asked a guy who’s seller said “yes. We are not tested animals”. I double asked “are u sure”. I didn’t know it’s should be show “not tested animals”. And now how wonder I figure out. Such as the lier.
Getting their animal testing policy is like pulling teeth. I tried contacting them several times and they won’t answer basic questions like required by law testing. I can’t say they test on animals though, but they won’t tell us much.
Daaamn, I thought Oriflame was completely cruelty free. It seems that after a bit of research they sell to countries where it might be required. I’m su bummed and disappointed in them…
The fragrances are also tested. That’s the case most of the time (Marc Jacobs is really an exception!).

The fact that labs are in different countries doesn’t change the fact that the company as a whole has still devices to operate in place where animal testing is required. They are choosing & paying for animal testing & this are not cruelty free in any way.

i’m not sure about Alberto V05. I know they used to be owned by Unilever, which does test on animals, but the most recent bottle I’ve seen says it’s distributed by High Ridge Brands Co, made in the USA, and not tested on animals. That’s all marketing PR…same blurb from MAC and any other company selling in China. If you buy something that tests in China, the money that you spend goes to the company. The company then has to pay the animal testing agency in China to get approval for sale, so yes, if you buy something in the US, Canada, or where ever, your purchases contribute to the funding of that animal testing. And yes, there is something they can choose to do, not sell in China, like all of the real cruelty-free companies choose to do. Fine if you choose to buy it or sell it, but don’t make false cruelty-free claims.

They have to test for eye, skin and respiratory irritants. Obviously I agree with you that they shouldn’t use animals to do this.
If a brand sells their beauty, perfume or home care products in China, they are consenting to animal testing and cannot be considered cruelty free.

Just because CHINA tests these products in CHINA does not mean that the PRODUCT COMPANIES test on animals.
If I bought a product and tested it on my cat before I used it, that doesn’t make the company a cruelty brand.
There is nothing the company can do once the products enter China.
If you’re buying your products from China, then you have a problem. If you’re buying them from Europe or USA, then they are CRUELTY FREE.
You can blame the brand for what CHINA does with it.
Your analogy is faulty. Here’s one: Imagine you make cruelty-free soap, and somebody told you you could increase your profits 1000% by selling to China. China’s the biggest market in the world, so who cares if a few bunnies have to die?
These companies all know the ethical cost of doing business in China, and choose to do it anyway, as per the above example. How can you defend that?
Actually, you can blame the brand, because it is the brand who is paying an animal testing agency in China so their products can be approved for sale. Given that the Chinese market is probably just as big, if not bigger than that of Europe and North America combined, so it’s not like it’s a minute amount of products being tested, it’s more like half of all of the company’s products.

L’Oreal still tests on animals where required by law, meaning they’re not cruelty-free.

While they seem to be working toward being truly cruelty-free, they still sell in China. And mainland China still requires, at this time, animal testing. :/ So technically, they’re not cruelty-free. Sorry, Cinnamon Bun.
Also, as a note, I’ve worked for manufacturers in the Health & Beauty industry. When a company includes vague statements like quoted above, you can bet your buns that they’re going to take advantage of the legal wiggle room those statements provide. If they didn’t, those statements wouldn’t even be there.
Unfortunately, non-animal in-vivo testing is way more expensive than traditional animal testing, and these cosmetic mega-companies just don’t care about anything except their profit margins. 🙁 The only way it will change is when the consumer demands higher standards regarding their testing procedures. Which is why it comes down to our thorough understanding of current laws, in the US and globally, and our choices regarding what we will tolerate when it comes to animal torture.
It would be awesome if you labeled those which are sold in China with an asterisk or something as to why they are not cruelty-free. I’m only a transitioning vegan and while many here would still hate me for it, I’d still like to know which are “better” in that it’s China’s fault, not the company as a whole. (Yes I understand the company should still back out of China if they truly care, but it would just also be nice to know in general their stance.)

This is a very misleading post. I can not stand up for all of these companies… but I can stand up for the one I work for. Mary Kay – USA does not test on animals. Most of our plants in other countries do not test on animals either. However, our plants in China do – because it is REQUIRED there by their laws… not because we choose to. In fact I am most certain that quite a few of these companies listed here are for that very same reason.

Avon has never tested on animals, i use to sell it! They pride themselves on not using animals products or testing on them. Dior uses natural scents in his perfumes and dose not need to test as his brand and many other ‘older classic brands’ listed here are tried and tested and dont test either. You should be careful not to spread gossip. In fact thanks to true campaigners to ban cruelty to animals has pretty much already succeeded as there are very few who can use animals in the creation and testing as it is a world wide ban now! I mean the laws in Europe ban testing cosmetics on animals, so my favourite French skincare brands Avène and Vichy can’t test on animals or outsource animals testing for products sold within Europe (I think that’s the law right now – correct me if I’m wrong)
But I assume they sell products in China which requires animal testing on cosmetics, which really sucks because in the end it’s up to them where they sell their products. China is the biggest emerging market in the world, and in the end producers will go where there are masses of new consumers. China really does need to change it’s stance on cosmetic animal testing (and it’s stance on a lot of things *cough* human rights abuses *cough* the death penalty *cough*)
Still I don’t know where I stand ethically by using these brands, the only brands I know will keep my skin clear and healthy and in a selfish way – allow myself to feel good – knowing that the products being sold to me have not been tested on animals in Europe, but may have been tested on animals in China. I guess I have a bit to think about now.
Hi Hope. I understand your dilemma. For me, as soon as I learned about how animals were treated in these tests that was it I couldn’t use any of those products any more. If a company doesn’t test in Europe or America but then does just to sell in China I think that’s unethical and I won’t have any part of it. A few years ago I started using essential oils and it opened up a whole new world for me in terms of skin care. Its not just about the essential oils but using completely natural and cheap products you probably have at home anyway to care for your skin. The toxins in these branded products are what are damaging your skin. I recently started a blog about the changes I make if you want to have a look let me know x
It might take some time to find what works for you, but there are a LOT of truly cruelty free options, including ones that are great for very sensitive skin. I highly recommend checking out Paula’s Chouce. Their ingredients/ formulations are top notch, they use no fragrance or known irritants, & they have fab customer service w/ an easy return policy should anything not work out for you. They also offer consultations to help you figure out what will likely work best for your skin type/ issues of you ate overwhelmed by the choices available. I use a number of their products & at 37 my skin is the best it’s ever been. I truly cannot recommend them highly enough.

All product ingredients have to be tested before the FDA can approve it for human use, that’s just how it is and how it always has been. Even if the company is cruelty free, it just means they’re using ingredients that were tested by another company and proven safe by the FDA. So nothing is actually cruelty free.
I’m looking for more info on a company called Just Natural Skin Care, I don’t see them on either of your lists. They claim they do not test, but… a lot of these places claim that…

Be careful with products that claim to not test on animals, they often use loopholes by getting other companies to test the products for them. It’s always better to check online before you buy. Or you can use apps that check the product for you. Hope this helps 🙂

For almost two years I believed in that lie and I was teaching our customers how animal friendly Bobbi Brown is! When I realized what the bs it was, I left my job. I’m a 100% cruelty free makeup artist now and I feel sick every time I see the Bobbi Brown logo. It’s very easy to be misinformed by the companies.

Dr. JART DOESN’T test on animals. They are dermatologist tested, and majority of the line is Vegan. I work for the company. It’s cruelty free.

a lot of brands who state they do not test on animals is because they themsleves are not testing (ie; Benefit) and they are hiring 3rd parties to carry out their testing, or they hire someone to hire someone to do it so they can claim they are cruelty free when infact they are not because they care more about profit, its all a marketing scam!! And it sucks that even brands like Nars who are “cruelty free” are owned by monster’s like Shiseido because in the end they are still reaping benefits. DIY or small Indie brands are they way to go!
You can’t trust brand representatives because they usually dont know and you cant trust the packaging because its all cleverly worded to avoid technicalities, such as brands claiming to be all natural, for example Bare Minerals might have (some natural) options but they market themselves and claim a beautiful natural finish to make you believe its all natural.
Animal testing is awful but I also believe animal derived ingriendents are, although the animal would rather be dead then in those cages. Who wants a cruelty-free lipstick made of dead beetles and sheeps wool/oil? Who wants a cruelty-free anti aging moisturizer with snake venom? (kate sommerville) Who wants a cruelty-free face masks with snail-secretions?
What’s more misleading is that animal-derived ingredients are totally considered “natural”. So your natural cruelty-free brand is full of animal by-products and dead insects.
Vegan is the most ethical choice! Even if you can’t fully commit make the difference when you can!

The Body Shop has good products and they are supposed to be cruelty free. I had a rash on my scalp that would not go away and the only thing that helped me was a their Ginger Shampoo. Tom’s Toothpaste is also excellent.

There’s only an exception if the products are manufactured in China (but not the US). And even then there can be post-market testing. If they’re sold in China and they’re foreign cosmetics, they’re most likely tested on animals.

Hello! I have a question: Lancome is mentioned as a brand that tests on animals on the make up section. However, in the fragrances section, Lancome is not mentioned. Does this mean that the perfumes sold by Lancome are cruelty free?

Murad acne products are incredibly effective and work quickly. They are also tested on people, not animals.
To knowingly continue to use a product that you have found out to be tested on animals, is sheer evil.
It would make sense, however a lot of the testing done is very abusive.. including tests where the animals are made to eat the food, then have their stomachs cut open to see what the food does to them internally. pet food that is not animal tested uses ingredients that they already know are not harmful, therefor do not need testing.
I think it boils down to where you are in the World and what your laws are. I try to stay is much cruelty free or leaping bunny free. But some products i’m sorry I will keep using, or until i find an alternative that is better or does the same. Trying to hurt ourselves to rather it is or isn’t is just to much time wasted, find it is better to each their own I try hard but sometime it’s not worth trying to find something different
to go with this… Places like china and others all test on animals it’s what they do, why because they have different laws and standards. Also goes for food and other products coming from there or factories that are there and sending it here

Hate to say it but Kiehls tests on animals. Their products are sold in China and therefore are tested on animals. I’ve recently switched to only cruelty free make up and skincare. I really wanted to get Kiehls but they’re not cruelty free at all. So far for my skincare, I’m looking at Lush, Dermalogica, Drunk Elephant, Kora Organics, Muddy Body & Josie Maran.

L’Oreal also stopped testing on animals. They will not test on animals in any products anymore. The only time they would ever test on animals again is if it is mandatory and they have no other choice, besides that L’Oreal is now cruelty free.

Er, it’s absolutely their CHOICE to sell in a country that requires animal testing. Companies that place profits before ethics don’t get my support, especially not when there are so many fantastic alternatives.

Most animal testing does not accurate show how it will affect a human. There have been many diseases cured in animals being tested that have not been able to cure humans. Also, Many companies that DO NOT test on animals, use more natural ingredients than those that do, making them healthier. You really think that all those chemicals the companies use that do test on animals is healthy?

Very true. Companies that don’t care about the health and welfare of animals usually don’t care much about the health and welfare of humans, either. They only care about the bottom line, filling our homes and environment and bodies with toxic ingredients that are slowly killing us just to earn another dollar. As long as the people who run those companies are getting rich, what do we (or the animals, or the earth) matter? 🙁

We need to remember that some brands are cruelty free even though their parent brands aren’t for example NYX is cruelty free but L’Oreal isn’t!

Basically, if a cosmetics company states that they don’t test on animals, then I wouldn’t like to think they do as it has been illegal to test cosmetic products on animals anywhere in the EU since 2013! If the same company sells their stock in mainland China however, then they are not a cruelty free company as by law their products must be tested before being sold there so they are still enabling this unnecessary cruelty to take place, they all should really say ‘unless required by law’ in their policy and then we will know that means ‘we sell our products in China so we do test on animals’ but sadly they don’t as I have found out from research!
So lots of research of beauty products for us all then until China change their law but websites like this make it soo much easier! : .))
p.s. soo hard to find a nice perfume which is not sold in China as all the main brands do, anybody any ideas?
Perfume is the sticking point for me, too! Sadly, I haven’t unearthed a single ‘designer’ brand that doesn’t sell in China or belong to a testing parent company (also important to me personally). I’m currently using Pacifica but would love to try one of the bespoke brands like Le Labo or Sweet Anthem 🙂

Try Island Organic deodorant. It can be found on Amazon. My husband used to use Old Spice deodorant as well, said it was the only thing that worked for him. He happily uses the Island Organic now. I also use it and it is the only deodorant that has ever worked for me. After a few weeks of use, your body will detox from years of commercial deodorant/antiperspirant use and your natural smell should improve. I’m not ashamed to say that I am a woman that had very stinky pits and for years went from deodorant brand to brand trying to find one that would work, with no long term success. After switching to Island Organic, I can actually skip a day of deodorant and not kill anyone at the end of the day. Try it 🙂

What a pathetic response. Other types of employment can be found-it is done frequently in today’s workforce. You obviously know nothing about animal testing or available alternatives or perhaps you are too self absorbed and entitled to care about something other than yourself. It is 100% a companies discretion as to whether to test their products or source raw ingredients from suppliers who test. There are other alternatives but it is more attractive to a CEO to add another million or two to his compensation package than to save the life of a beagle or rabbit.

No one forced them to sell in China, it’s not a legal requirement to sell in China, so it is 100% their own choice to have thier products tested on animals.

GlamGlow is cruelty free! Also, the majority of their products are vegan-friendly with the exception of ThirstyMud as it uses Orange Blossom Honey (which is obviously harvested from bees). I’d like to see GlamGlow moved to the cruelty free list.

By the way, SUNLIGHT IS NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS. They are owned by Huish which is Sun Products. Since the beginning they have never tested any of their products on animals. This message is directly from the company, “Sun Products is committed to health, safety and the protection of the environment. As such, we don’t test our products on animals, nor do we ask others to test our products on animals.” This company owns the following brands, Wisk, Sunlight, Surf, ALL and Snuggle. The products are awesome and the only ones I use. Don’t forget to check out those Snuggle scent boosters !

Please share you’re sources as I’ve done many essays and research on multiply of these brands, most of all ARTISTRY , they signed the PETA in 1989 and unless government regulated (yes sometimes the government forces it) they will not test on animals ! I’m ashamed too see someone put down so many names of brands that have signed and followed regulations. Please before you write things do you’re proper research!

I wouldn’t trust PETA with anything. They will do whatever it takes, including lieing, to support their facts. And all of those animals they have put to death. PETA should be at the top of NOT cruelty free!
You can easily do your own research. Most companies that choose to sell in China (ie agree to animal testing) will have a ‘where required by law’ statement in their website FAQs.
Clorox does not test on almost all their products. Almay has not tested for over 2p years. Benefits cosmetic do not test on animals. Arm and hammer laundry soap is not tested on animals.
Also I don’t understand why we are still testing on animals anywhere in the world when the prison systems are full to bursting with live test specimens.
Avon was founded as a way to AVOID buying products tested on animals. So for them to all of a sudden be testing on animals is a ridiculous claim. They have it as part of their mission statement “will never test on animals.” So I call B.S. on some of these products.

Hi Rachel! Many companies word their animal testing policy in deceiving terms. An example would be stating that they’re “against animal testing” or that they “don’t ask others to test on their behalf”. Another common issue is companies stating that they don’t test on animals “except where required by law”, which means they’re not truly cruelty-free.
Then this should say worldwide list. You could have 2 separate lists. One for worldwide and one for American.
These are all global companies, and the profits from US sales are not in a separate bubble. If you buy something in the US, other parts of North America like Canada or Mexico, Europe, etc., the profits all go to the one company. So if they sell in China, the profits from something you bought are used by them to pay for the animal testing that allows them to sell in China.
HI, I wrote you earlier about Marc Jacobs and coty. They promised they didn’t test on animals, but they lied. They were very deceiving . They may not test in animals here in the states , but they sell to China and they do the testing. I will contacting them and telling how disappointing they are and how sneaky they were to a once loyal customer. Hi, I contacted Coty and Marc Jacobs and they both told me they DO NOT TEST on animals . Coty actually sent me a copy if a legal documents with their entire policy on no animal testing . Although I agree with your general point and think animal testing is cruel and mostly unnecessary, I am a little confused about the pet food. How else would you test pet food? Human food is tested on humans too… Please explain.
The issue is the method in which the pet food is “tested”. Animal testing here refers to using lab animals, which are treated extremely poorly. Although lab conditions today are better than they used to be, there are alternatives to using lab animals. The alternative is using “real” pets that go on with their day-to-day lives as opposed to caged lab animals. I hope this explains it a bit better! I did write a lengthly post on the topic. 🙂

You do know that even if the company did not test on animals, at least one (and in most cases almost all) were tested on animals. They wouldn’t be allowed to be sold if they weren’t.

The law was only altered for local companies selling SOME types of cosmetics, so the law is still 100% unchanged for foreign companies like Glamglow. And they do sell in mainland China unfortunately, not just in Hong Kong where that law doesn’t apply. 🙁

I only saw one of the products on here I use which is not cruelty free. Unfortunately, I don’t think an alternative exists. Sorry, the Mizani line of products has been the only line that works on my hair. If anyone can provide me with a cruelty-free alternative, I’ll be grateful.

They test on animals where required by law unfortunately, and they sell their products where the law requires animal testing (China)! This is why they can’t be considered cruelty-free.

I think it’s disgusting that in this day and age that there are that many companies out there still testing on animals – quite frankly I’m shocked, I have now made the switch and I have just ordered my full makeup from BarryM, can you plesae advise of a cruelty free toothpaste and moisturiser? I will be going through all my lotions and potions in the next few weeks and disguarding anything that so much as hints at pain and suffering.

If you don’t support any brand owned by a company that tests on animals, I realize this doesn’t soften the blow unfortunately. But if it’s of any comfort, Tom’s of Maine is still certified by the Leaping Bunny. I hope you find another brand you love that’s 100% cruelty-free (I can recommend Desert Essence, Alba Botanica, or Jason). Best of luck!

How, exactly, do some of these companies test on animals? Such as the animal food products: how is the testing cruel? And Pampers and Puffs–diapers and tissue paper? How are those tested in a cruel way?

most likely its the chemicals in them. For example, disposable nappies have absorbent chemicals and that is what is tested. Some tissues have essential oils etc and those will be tested. So what we get is harmless but they most likely tested other things that were chucked because they harmed the animal they tested on. Also animals used for animal testing are often kept in very bad conditions so its cruel all round.

This is really helpful. I’m planning to go cruelty free over the next year and this is really going to help to work out which companies to avoid. Unfortunately I can’t go cruelty free right now as I don’t have much money at the moment to get rid of all the products but once I used them up I’ll look for a cruelty free brand to replace them.

NOT COLGATE! There is at least one error on this list. As a long-term employee who is very familiar with the processes and procedures at the Colgate Palmolive Science and Technology Center, I am absolutely certain and can assure everyone that Colgate does not use animals for product testing.
I thought I was doing quite good until I scrolled down to Vaseline, then Dove soap. Really? I still use them and then, because I am home sick with a cold I looked up Vicks. VICKS – I have been rubbing myself with Vicks all this week. I cannot do that any more. What alternative is there for that. Also so many soaps. For some things there does not seem to be an alternative but I am definitely going to stop using what I have mentioned. Anybody tell me an alternative to Vicks?
For anyone reading this at a later date and wondering the same, here are some essential oils that can help. Use either;
>Lemon or Peppermint (for cough and congestion)
>Frankincense (for clearing nasal passages and lungs)
>Lavender (for sinus congestion)
>Eucalyptus (nasal congestions and upper respiratory infections)
MAKE SURE TO ALWAYS READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE BOTTLE! Mix a few drops of oil in large glass bowl of hot water and drape a towel over your head to catch the steam. Keep face far enough away that the steam doesn’t burn your skin and breathe in through the nose for approx 10 mins (or longer if needed)
Or, Mark, we could test on you. I would feel bad…. especially when you writhed in pain, vomited your guts out, or had your vocal cords cut so they couldn’t hear your cries. Hi, I ma having serious problems with cruelty free brands, I use a retinol cream for face and one for eyes but tried Oz and Paula’s choice and my skin breaks down (today is like I have been bitten my mosquitoes)…any idea of where to start? Hi. You should truly look into Murad products. They are clinical, effective, affordable and tested on people, not animals.
But they are full of nasty chemicals! Use cruelty free, organic products….much healthier!
Organic is also out of a lot of people’s price range because, while finding cruelty free brands can be affordable, organic is not so much. Organic is great and all, but don’t shame people who don’t go organic when it may not be in their price range.
Good to do some research on prices. Prices have dropped on many cruelty-free products. Dr Bonner’s seems expensive but it is diluted by water when you use it. It goes a long way!
Hi, chemicals can seep through the skin and then get into the blood stream, be careful with what you use when washing your hair – as nasties can get into the scalp and go into your brain! No nasty chemicals – all good. I still don’t trust a lot of these companies at any rate, always need professionals in order to go through the policies which the ordinary person just cannot understand. Sick and tired of this sort of thing, can read, but not any long, arduous policies, if you know what I mean! Happy organic (Organic Certified) and cruelty free hunting! No animal abuse, no excuses.

Why would they test pet food products on animals? I’m not a vegan nor a vegetarian but it’s a little sad and interesting to discover the products that do test on animals. They probably start their pet food business because they love pets and they feel that connection that I do. Oh and they decide to test animals like they don’t care. It’s also astonishing because Blue Buffalo always advertises that their dog didn’t like the chick-peas in their food, so they switched to Blue for real meat. Yes, dogs would prefer real meat then chick-peas, but we would all rather at least you have food then potentially kill animals. Even as a non vegan, it confuses me. It doesn’t go into a puzzle.
also,, burberry are not cruelty free, makeup brand, i didnt see it on the makeup, so maybe you should add that

Can someone please advise why Benefit is on this list? And on the PETA list? I looked them up because I really love their products and this is what it said. “Benefit does not test our products on animals.

Makeup Revolution doesn’t test on Animals and don’t sell in China.
Make up revolution is only sold in the UK and is cruetly free.
Regarding “how can you not test food on animals”, the tests are SOMETIMES done in extremely inhumane conditions where the dogs are kept in small cages, poor conditions, and die as a result.
There’s no real need to test pet food on animals though, as there are alternative methods. Some pet food companies don’t use animal testing at all.

Er, Purina is not owned by P&G. Iams used to be (but isn’t anymore anyway).

Great list! However, I do have a question about OPI. I read that they used to test on animals a long time ago but then stopped several years ago. I also heard that they were bought by a company that DOES test on animals- but they still do NOT test their products on animals. It is the same situation with Body Shop products; the company that owns them tests on animals, but the Body Shop does not. I have switched from OPI and Loreal nail polish to Sally Hansen, and Gosh because they do not test on animals, and because I want to be 100% that any brand I use, is cruelty free. <3
OPI is unfortunately sold in China to the best of my knowledge. This is why they’re not cruelty-free in my book. 🙁
They both still test on animals, unfortunately. Some companies will use loopholes and deceptive phrasing.
I’m in the middle of a shitfight ATM, bc I know they do & I’m sure my boss is torn but I can’t ignore it & my boss is making it sound like I’ve stores the hornets nest(I prob have!! These big companies don’t like people like me!!) Feeding trials are done in laboratories, where animals are kept unhealthy and confined in small cages. Also, said animals are brutalized for no reason. That is NOT cruelty-free, by any stretch of the imagination.

Nivea does NOT tests on animals simply because its cosmetic is made in Germany where as many of you might know animal testing is banned by the law
On their website, Nivea states:
“Beiersdorf, the organisation behind the NIVEA brand, does not test on animals. As a global company, all our affiliates including Australia and New Zealand, are aligned on this stance. We believe animal testing is not required to prove the safety and effectiveness of our products.
In China, however, animal testing is mandated by law for the official registration and certification of the safety of certain product categories. In this case, the tests are conducted by local institutions authorised by the state not by the companies selling the product. Our goal is to convince these authorities that animal testing for cosmetic products is unnecessary and to advocate for the international acceptance of alternative testing methods.”
So because they supply the mainland Chinese market, they can’t be considered cruelty free!
L’Oreal are owned by Unilever,animal testers,wouldn’t touch them….pretty sure they make Stella McCartney’s fragrance as well,another celebrity hypocrite….

I get where you’re coming from, but the ban only applies to cosmetics. A lot of these French companies work with pharmaceutical companies that still test on animals.

You really have to do thorough research – what one regards as an animal-friendly company may indeed have a dark side – of a non-animal-friendly parent company. . . . . If you take a step into Estee Lauder’s website, you will find a huge list of companies under their umbrella . . . . . .Decleor unfortunately has Shiseido as it’s parent company, which is when I stopped using them . . . .Liz Earle has AVON as parent company, although they maintain that they are a ‘stand alone company’ still . . . . . it’s a minefield, tread carefully. . . . .
I totally get your point, Simone. I always make sure to point out whenever a brand is owned by a company that isn’t cruelty-free. I believe everyone has to choose for themselves where they draw the line, as this issue isn’t completely black and white. 🙂
That is my younger daughter’s response. I told her to envision whatever the product being dropped or sprayed directly in the poor, immobilized animals eyes or mouth each time she enjoys using the products. Let’s say,, like Clorox or Tilex… Something to think about.

I was really happy to see that I don’t use anything from any of these companies…It has been a hard slog to get there and living in France sometimes it is hard to source some products which are cruelty free…but If I can’t find them I do without. Well done for this..thank you very much

not true! the list id not up to date! it has Fresh as doing animal testing! the only creams I use on my face are from Fresh and I actually spent a lot of time reading the back of the label because i happen to be very allergic and sensitive to some chemicals!
Selling in China is not the same as assembling the product in US. That shipment has to comply with the Chinese governments rules from formula to package, every country has their own rules. just because its done in China, doesn’t mean its done in US as well.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Fresh unfortunately SELLS their products in mainland China, meaning they do have to comply with the animal testing rules.

If they sell cosmetics in mainland China, they WILL be tested on animals, as that is the law there. Any company that sells in mainland China supports animal testing. They claim they don’t, but their exception is that they do when required by law. They sell in a county that requires it by law.
Yes, I also read that China have a post-animal testing policy? Meaning that companies can find as many loopholes as they like but the finished product may be removed from the shelves at any time and tested on animals.
I would not trust ANY company that sells in China, no matter what spin they put on it. They are not in control, the Chinese authorities are and we all know how bad their animal testing policies are

Companies have to pay to be included in free bunny, since it’s technically a type of advertising. So they meet the standards but then have to pay to be given to a consumer. I would use the company questions or sights like these, not PETA given that they’re scum to animals.
NYX cosmetics dark circle eraser comes in like 3 or 4 colours from light to dark and it’s the perfect salmon coloured colour corrector.

I’m confused, I’m just wondering how pet food brands can justify what they’re selling without testing it on animals in order to see if it works? I’m just curious as to how this would work. I understand makeup, skincare, etc and how that’s just cruel and unusual punishment, but when it’s meant for animals how are they tested when not on animals? I’m just curious 🙂

Thank you for taking the time to make these lists! I’m curious as to how Walgreens ended up on it, but not other drugstores like CVS, Rite Aid, or Target. I’m definitely going to stop buying Walgreens’ Studio 35 products, what’s the status on the others?
CVS confirmed that their makeup brand Nuance is cruelty-free, but I have yet to hear a confirmation about their generic brand. I’m going to do some research and come up with a full post about generic store brands. Stay tuned! 🙂
I have an app called Cruelty Cutter and I scanned the generic target brand while I was looking for a new body wash and it told me it wasn’t tested on animals, if that helps sway that brand’s case.
Also scanned the CVS generic brand while I was there tonight. Not sure if Vegan for either generic brand, but definitely says cruelty free. The last screen shot is the up&up body wash!
I think you mean “have not” made my list, right? Cetaphil is not cruelty-free. Their finished products aren’t tested on animals, but the products are made by a pharmaceutical company that tests on animals.

I was so shocked to see here one of my main brands L’Occitane. I was even thinking in applying for working in one of their shops because I love the brand. I read on their website that they do NOT test on animals, although they do sell on China. They don’t do the testing directly AND they’ve been fighting against that testing. They got some products to be sold in China without testing and they keep working on that, so one day all their products will be cruelty free even in China. I’m in process to become an cruelty free customer, but I think I’ll keep buying from L’Occitane, because I think it’s important that the big companies try to change things in China. If we all avoid to support them, it won’t change much, because in China the problem will continue. I mean Chinese people need stuff too, so the change must come from outside China.
I definitely agree with you. And many smaller companies would glady join the Chinese market if they had the funds. I don’t blame the companies that are selling in China but rather the super-outdated law on animal testing there. That’s what has to change.

Just an excuse. By selling in China, they have made a decision that their profits are more important than animals lives and rights. If you buy from them, you support this too. If they really were ethical and wanted change, they would put their money were their mouth is and refuse to sell in China; contributing towards the torture of animals UNTIL China changes its policies. Instead, they want that Chinese money and they don’t care how many bunnies, puppies and mice get tortured in the process. They are depending on people to believe their rubbish that they are ‘working on it’ when they CLEARLY have an option B (it just won’t make them as much money.

Congrats on making the switch! 🙂 Are you looking for specific product recs? For affordable makeup, I would suggest brands like NYX, Wet’n’Wild, ELF, Hard Candy, Sonia Kashuk. Everything is a bit hit or miss though!

Smashbox and Gosh are cruelty free make up brands as well! But you probably already know that by now.. haha On another note, Sally Hansen doesn’t test their nail polish and other products on animals either!

Wasn’t aware they sold in China (Hong Kong isn’t subject to animal testing on cosmetics).
I use SoBio here in France…the products are very good and I think my skin looks good with them. Their prices are really good and I can buy them in my local supermarket
So biological is made by nuxe and not cruelty free. Just bio. It’s a bit of a trap. I’m currently at monoprix trying to find something!

in addition to stop using these products, we need to write the company – online and an actual letter – and explain exactly why we will not use or promote their product. Also, that we will actively let everyone know how they test on animals.

If you can order online, Personna and Preserve are fairly big brands. You might also find them (or other cruelty-free brands) at health stores.

All youhave to do is buy products with the leaping bunny.logo or that says it is vegan until you learm what ingredients to avoid.
mac does test on animals in china as required by law
A company with good standards will refuse to test on animals even if they cannot enter a market. So for MAC and other companies that sell in China as wellm they put profits before ethics.

Just use plan old vinegar, dish soap and baking soda. That’s all I use to clean my house, aside from window cleaner. Vinegar is magical and you don’t get all those toxic chemicals. My house felt a million times cleaner when i switched from expensive chemical products.

Yes Astonish !! and they are cheap as chips from the 99p store and £1 shops. . . .and M&S for washing liquids, washing up liquids . . . . some people think that makes me loaded to buy such stuff at M&S . . . but when they have offers on, I stock up . . .washing up liquid is about 90p I think . . .
