Josie Maran Cheek Gelee Review

Josie Maran Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee in Poppy Paradise

When I saw Josie Maran’s Coconut Watercolor Cheek Gelee in Poppy Paradise at Sephora, I knew I had to have it. I’m a huge fan of little multi-purpose pot rouges as well as pigmented red blushes in general — they look super natural on and a little goes a long way. If you’re familiar with Josie Maran as a brand, you know that they whole philosophy is providing ethical cosmetics made from natural and healthier ingredients than traditional makeup. The second ingredient in this cream blush jelly is actually Coconut Juice.

Aqua (Water) (and) Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Fruit Juice, Glycerin, Isopropyl Isostearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Isostearyl Hydroxystearate, Methyl Gluceth-20, Glyceryl Stearate, Phenoxyethanol, Ceteareth-20, Butylene Gycol, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil (Organic), Sodium Hydroxide, Disodium EDTA.

I love cream blushes because of how easy their application is as well as for their long staying power. This particular cream blush is a “gelee” rather than a pure cream, but it absolutely shares those same qualities. But it’s also better for several reasons, and the best cream blush I’ve found specifically because it stands out.

For starters, this is probably one of the most natural-looking blushes that you can get your hands on at Sephora, both in terms of color and texture. The color I got is called Poppy Paradise, and as you can see, it looks like a bright poppy red with some pink in it in the pot. On your cheeks, it blends out to the perfect natural flush of pink. But what truly makes it look natural is the finish: because of the unusual jelly texture, the product has a really nice shine to it yet sets to a matte finish with subtle dewiness. The (organic) Argan Oil and (synthetic, non-animal) glycerin it contains make for lasting color, too. If you’re into super shimmery blushes, this might not the the right blush for you. But if you’re looking something dewy and natural, I would totally suggest this Cheek Gelee in any of their 6 shades!

A few more words about the texture: while it might look solid and waxy, it’s actually not waxy at all! Rather, it has this perfect creamy gel-like consistency that makes it super easy to blend while also being quite pigmented. Based on the texture, it makes perfect sense that its second ingredient is Coconut Juice and that it’s water-based. It’s definitely cool and refreshing, but it’s more than just a summery product. I don’t know about you, but I love a dewy, natural-looking finish all year round!

  • Natural, dewy finish.
  • Perfect texture and consistency; easy to apply and blend.
  • Long-lasting.
  • Good color selection for all skintones.
  • Vegan.
  • Super cute and sturdy packaging!

  • It’s still not a truly natural makeup product.

Verdict: 9/10

Overall, I would say that if you’re into natural looks, you need one (or more!) of these Cheek Gelees. This is the best natural blush out there. Poppy Paradise is definitely my personal favorite, but Josie Maran has a really nice selection of colors for all skintones, including a peachy coral as well as a deep plum! You could even mix them to create a custom cheek color if that’s your thing! They retail for 22$ each at Sephora.

I ordered this recently from Sephora to try out in a mini size for $13. If I like it, it will become part of my work desk stash and a big one will come home with me :-) Thanks for the review!
