The Gnarly Whale Review

The Gnarly Whale offers body and hair products that are completely vegan. You can find their shampoos, beach wave hair sprays, soaps, lip balms, beard oils, and newly released makeup removers, on their official site, and some of their range is also carried by Urban Outfitters. My favorite thing about this company is its minimalistic approach to everything from ingredients to packaging. Their lovely-scented products also come with a green conscience!

Distilled water, triethanolamine lauryl sulfate, cocamide dea, essential oils and/or fragrance, and grapefruit seed extract.

The first thing that struck me when looking through their products is their wide range of awesome fragrances. Each product has one particular scent, and they all sound so attractive: Cotton Candy, Birthday Cake, Pistachio Macaron, Bubblegum, Strawberry, and Cherry Blossom are only a few examples. The Gnary Whale really focuses on fragrance to make their products stand out. Even if the fragrance in the products I’ve tried isn’t overwhelming, keep in mind that their stuff does contain synthetic flavors and fragrances if you’re sensitive to those. Other than that, the ingredients they use are mostly natural and safe.

I tried their Somalian Rose Shampoo. I was really surprised that it only contains three base ingredients, plus the fragrance and oils. The first ingredient is water, which isn’t surprising as this shampoo is completely liquid! It’s straight-up watery, which is something you have to get used to at first. It’s not the easier product to apply, but it’s the price to pay for having a shampoo with minimal ingredients. The foaming agents they use are Triethanolamine Lauryl Sulfate and Cocamide DEA. The latter is derived from coconut, and the former is often used in shampoo for dry or damaged hair as a milder alternative to Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. And lo and behold: this shampoo is really gentle! I didn’t expect it to be as gentle is it is, but it did leave my damaged hair shiny and surprisingly moisturized. At the same time, it makes my hair feel clean as well as light. I’m normally a fan of rose scents, and this one is just… okay. It smells a bit synthetic to me even thought it’s described as a “fragrance oil”.

Candelilla wax, mango butter, coconut oil, jojoba oil, vitamin e, grapefruit seed extract, flavor/essential oils.

Their lip balms, like their whole line, are completely vegan and contain candelilla wax instead of beeswax. I tried their Grand Marnier & Apricot flavor as well as their Asian Pear flavor, and both smell amazing! They provide decent moisture and make your lips nice and smooth. Like other vegan lip balms I’ve tried, their texture is oily rather than thick, but it’s still thick enough to last on the lips without feeling heavy. The Grand Marnier & Apricot flavor has a very gritty texture, which I’m not sure is intentional, but it doesn’t bother me regardless.

Go check out all of The Gnarly Whale’s cruelty-free hair and body care collection! They just added new yummy scents for fall!
